Dodge Ram 3500 Exhaust Mod

  • Doing an exhaust mod for a buddy with a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Cummins diesel.The info center was showing a DPF full see dealer message,to get rid of that problem we decided the most economical way (not necessarily the easiest way) for the time being to gut the DPF , DOC and catalytic converter as I have all the tools,welder,plasma cutter etc. This will not only get rid of the message coming up and causing the truck to go into a reduced power state, but will also enable the installation of a Bully Dog GT tuner to do the deletes.The hardest part was to remove the platinum out of the cat in the turbo down pipe,without owning a hammer drill with a chisel I wouldn't attempt to gut it and just leave it or install an aftermarket turbo down pipe instead.

    This is the best exhaust delete video on TH-cam!!! I've spent the last 3 days researching and learning everything I could about this system... with the exact same idea to do this to my truck in the exact same way!!!!
    So THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH... for making such a detailed video showing me exactly what I'm going to be in for!!! This was really awesome!!!
    One thing I am still wondering though... if all the censors are working fine... and left in place... if all you did was hollow out the junk... would you even have to actually run a delete tuner?
    Did you test this theory before hand and get engine codes? Or just hook the tuner up straight away?

    • @photocontrol
      @photocontrol  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you!! Glad this will help you with your delete! Yes you need the delete tuner installed as the DPF pressure sensors would give a code once the system is hollowed out. The delete tuner will disable all the sensors.
      I just hooked up the tuner after the delete straight away before starting the engine.

    And all the cars and trucks on the road have that crap. You have done the best thing you could have to free up the exhaust.
    I did the same thing with a drill and then beat the pieces into dust, then vacuumed it all out.
    Good you kept it looking stock, so upon a visual inspection, they will let you go. If they see it missing, its ticket time.

    Definitely a good idea. Looks stock to visual inspection plus the DPF being that big and empty it acts like a muffler so it definitely is quieter than a full straight pipe!

    Hey man awesome video for any USA mates wondering in my state NV we have visual smog inspections as long as you don’t have a check engine light and your emission equipment is intact your hood to go so this is the only method you can do to you truck to get away with smog. I have a 17 67 Cummins with ezlink trans tunes ect. I bought a 4’ flo pro dpf delete pipe but didn’t wanna hassle swapping the dpf every year so gutted the stock and shoved a 4’ pipe through it and got the egr valves welded shut. Hello Photocontrol,
    Hey, I'd like to tell you I concur with many others who have said that this is a great video. I followed what you did list night and gutted my system. Let me add a warning: wear protective clothing so that you don't start itching from the fiberglass that is inside the units.
    Okay, so now mine are completely cleaned out and I only have to find a local welder to weld up the stainless steel can. And, I also now have to figure out how to fool the computer into thinking the system has not been "repaired". In the U.S., as you know, apparently, it is so illegal to get a delete tuner, no one will sell them at a reasonable price. AND, my truck is 1 mile away from a derate. What to do? I'm weighing my options but I may not know all of them "my options, that is).

    • @photocontrol
      @photocontrol  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Ralph, yes true there is particles during the gutting procedure that can be irritating. Sounds like you are making good progress with your delete. That is true, one of the issues is that it's hard to get a full delete tuner in the U.S. and expensive. In Canada they are still available, online stores most likely will not ship to the U.S. though, it is handy if you have a Canadian relative that can receive it and send it to you.

    Hey photocontrol. this is cool and thanks. Could you please tell me if you had already installed the dpf delete and egr deletes BEFORE you did this. Or did you do this and then do the EGR and DPF deletes. And if I do this BEFORE I do the deletes, will it throw crazy codes on me. I want to do this part on my own, and then give it to the shop to do, so I'm wondering if it's detrimental to drive it with DPF, cat after tuning, or if it's dangerous to drive it just a bit after having done this, but prior to deletion? Thanks.

    • @photocontrol
      @photocontrol  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Scott, after all the emissions stuff was gutted/deleted on the exhaust system, the tuner was installed in the truck before starting or driving again. If you want to install the tuner "before" deleting, then you can indicate when prompted that the emissions systems are still in the truck and it will be like using the "street legal" version of the BullyDog tuners that are not emissions delete capable. I believe... but could be wrong that the street legal HP gains are not quite as high as the HP gains available for complete delete. Once you do the deletes then reprogram the tuner so that when you are prompted by the tuner if emissions are deleted then you indicate "yes", this way once you start the truck after deletes it would be like all the CAT & DPF were never there (sensors disabled). You would need the tuner installed/programmed before you can drive the truck after deletes otherwise I'm sure there will be crazy codes and possibly limp mode as well. -Darren

    Attaboyeee, get all that junk out from there !

  • @jmann2112
    @jmann2112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video and clean work. Not only does this emissions junk increase maintenance cost, reduce engine performance, and longevity - it makes fueling with biodiesel a bad option!
    The DPF system works by injecting excessive into the cylinders on the down-stroke. This unburned fuel theoretically goes into the exhaust system to raise temperatures and aid in burning the particulates.
    Biodiesel has a higher burn temperature so it doesn't burn in the exhaust & causes washout of the cylinders and raises oil levels in the crank case.
    Tell me that's not a convenient way to kill the biodiesel industry! If the EPA & governments really cared for the environment, they'd mandate ENGINE efficiency improvements from the manufacturers and Biodiesel would be available at every gas station!
    Biodiesel has higher lubricity decreasing engine wear, is carbon neutral, locally sourced and burnd cleaner than petrol oil.
    I suspect OPEC & currupt politicians (both Dems & Reps) are to blame for this ineffective and expensive emissions junk. Add some expensive, failure prone equipment to a vehicle making it 10-20% less efficient in the name of environment?!
    I'm calling foul play & BS....

    • @photocontrol
      @photocontrol  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question...you may get a warning and they say you have to get it fixed by a certain time. Do you notice any other diesel owners in your area with deletes? If it's too risky there won't be anyone else driving around with deletes lol. To do a delete it can get pretty expensive, as a pricey harder to get full delete capable tuner is also required. In an area that is more strict, it would be good to keep the stock exhaust with the CAT and DPF intact and have an aftermarket straight pipe delete exhaust, in case you have to switch back.
