Thanks for donating blood! I received one unit of red cells after a not-at-fault motorcycle crash left me with a badly broken leg, ruptured spleen, and a 5.5 hour surgery to fix the leg. That transfusion made a HUMONGOUS difference in my energy level and ability to transfer myself into a wheelchair and do PT exercises. I said "Wow, if they were real, this is what a vampire would feel like." I felt like I went from half dead to alive again. The exhaustion is indescribable when you have less than half of the hemoglobin you are supposed to. I got fevers every night from the stress of PT during the day, and that stopped after the transfusion. Someone out there made me feel a world of difference better during one of the worst times in my whole life. I'll never get to thank them. They'll never know how much it meant to me.
Great video. My Dad and Uncle converted a ‘67 Greyhound 4104 in the early 1970s. They convinced Greyhound to give them the bus to experiment with a conversion. They did the conversion in front of our house in Evanston, Il. It was the first used(very) Greyhound chassis to be converted. Dad and my uncle convinced companies like Thetford, Thermosan, Norcold, etc. to give them their components and let them install them on the bus. My favorite memories are of our two families (there were 9 of us in total) traveling around the Country to RV shows in that 4104. Grew up on the smell of diesel. The idea took off and Greyhound gave us a Scenic Cruiser to convert next. We had that professionally by a family in North Chicago. That family grew into the premier chassis converter, Liberty Coach. Dad worked for the Family Motor Coaching Association for more than 30 years selling advertising in their monthly magazine, as did I for a number of years. Blood blood blood, I pulled up the donor website and checked my account ... I've donated 57 times over the years. Whole blood, we get a t-shirt and tickets to the zoo or some other thing, sometimes a chance to win a car ...also soda, cookies, candy bars, chips, sometimes a sandwich ... they also test for total cholesterol and a few other things. Last time I went to donate my iron was to low. I quit eating meat over a year ago and I've lost a lot of weight with a change in diet, but I'm eating some meat now and taking an iron supplement. BTW, It takes 600 calories to replace a unit of blood. I'm really liking the in frame rebuild. I've done a few in frame car overhauls over the years. I even melted lead onto the inserts once when I was a poor college student, an old 235 Chevy pickup 6 cylinder, smoothed them up and figured they would seat in, one way or another. It was still running when I sold it a couple of years later.
Bless you on your life giving gift of blood. It was someone like you who saved my life when an emergency 5x heart bypass went south on me 10 years ago. Took many units to save me. As a retired airline mechanic who lived and died by on time schedules , It really torques me off when I'm given a time that something's supposed to be done and then not deliver. Under promise and over deliver has always been my moto. Amazing how many times it'll make you a hero.

Thanks for doing what some of us cannot do. I would love to donate blood but because of my service in Iraq I cannot. Add to that I was assigned to Europe during the mad cow outbreak, so I’m definitely locked out, like many of my veteran brothers. Veterans were always donating. I always encourage those that can to do it. We don’t know when or if they will clear us to donate. As far as my health im ok, but when there’s a full moon out, I MOO.
Im from EU side of the big pond and can say that blood donation is not that simple. Not everybody can do it. The questionnary (needs to be filled every time) alone was 4-5 pages or so long. Things like recent surgeries and trips, medications, vaccinations etc may easily make one unsuitable for donation.
You’re doing a great thing by giving blood. I used to donate blood years ago and received thank you cards when I donated blood to a named beneficiaries who required several units for an operation.
After Watching all this the 6-71 is becoming one of my favorite engines. Becoming very impressed with the engineering and versatility..... and a few quirks lol.

Yup I'm O negative as well. I was also a code N, meaning I lack a protein that can cause problems for newborns. When I would go in to donate, they'd make a fuss and say I was donating for the babies. Alas about 17 years ago my platelet count mysteriously fell through the floor and even though they bounced back my Dr said my donating days were over. Koodos on continuing to donate and helping to promote the practice!
thats the beauty of a 6-71,,swap cams reverse head, swap rotation,THE UNIVERSAL ENGINE,UNTIL EPA STEPPED IN,was the go to engine for all aplications,on air start motors ya had a chance of them starting backwards,big surprise when ya dropped the clutch,just restart and would be fine,,,,gm,,generic motors,,aka detroit
That shot of the UPS trucks front tire reminds me of when the Goodyear Blimp came to my hometown in 1975. All the support truck's were at a local hotel and 2/3rd's of the tires on those vehicles looked like that one on the UPS truck.

put your liners in a freezer, once they are nice and cold they will fit easily and expand when warm to be a proper fit. to remove liners, run beads of weld down the old liners ( piston removed) and they will shrink, and be easy to push out.

The old girl looks like it was run very low on oil at some point in the past. The bearings definitely show signs of oil starvation. Thanks for the video.
Wayne Swicegood those bearings show signs of normal wear. Lots of it. I’ve been working on those engines for 30 years and I’ve seen much much worse usually only on a 92 with coolant in the oil.
Amazing job. I always think this DDC engines are the more beautiful ones to work in and assemble. And once running the 2 stroke sound is priceless. No other one 4 stroke modern engine will never make that feeling when is being rebuilt. Great job.

Machine shops always seem to take a few more days than quoted. I can understand why, but after all these years I know to add at least two days, why can't with all their years of experience communicate a realistic expectation? Pulling for an on time departure for ya buddy!

Im O- too. I usually go in and whisper to the clerk im O- and can donate double platelets or a double dose. And all sorts of nurses come out and show there fangs for my blood. We are highly looked for.
I spent a lot of time on a motorcycle when I was a rowdy young party animal. The only tattoo I seriously considered getting was a broken circle on the inside of my elbow with the logo. "O neg - Fill Here"
Nice talk about fitting liners, Scott - I've always been amazed at how many people do it, yet don't know most of the high points that you mentioned. It's no wonder, I suppose, that I've seen so many poorly done overhauls and heard so many tales of woe from owners. Can't wait to see your OOF overhaul - at the rate you've been travelling lately, I guess it won't be too terribly long! Loving the Spike n Tyke double-team work! My eldest and I used to work that well together, but he sits behind a desk all day now, and I'm just getting too old.

Maybe the missing fuel injectors didn't get delivered because worn out tires on the UPS truck caused it to skid off a hairpin turn along a cliff side road....
Good job on the engine. I can't give blood banned by the red cross because I spent more than 6 months in Scotland in the eighties during a tour in the navy I use to always give blood before that.
I got banned from giving, had a cornea transplant the odd part was I gave at least ten times after having the transplant then decided they didn't want my blood anymore! I had 54 donations up to that point.
I love how they use crush rings to seal the cylinders. If only 4stroke turbo engines did this. Save so many headgaskets. Oh and you should see my veins. Blood drawers LOVE my arms. Literally my main arm vein protrudes a 1/4" from my forearm without flexing
Stainless steel shims, so they don't crush. They can be very problematic for the inexperienced. Used to set the cylinder liner protrusion so the headgasket gets the appropriate crush. If you want the equivalent for non liner engines machine a fire ring into the head or block. Then enjoy the added problems/complications associated.
glad to see you fitting the liners properly. seen it done incorrectly and the DO get hot. haste makes waste. I believe you will get over a hundred easily the way you watch your equipment
Machine Shops have schedules to keep and I've had issues with EVERYONE I've ever used. However, I've found with ALL of them that you can have work done Cheap/Fast/Professional.... Pick any two of the three and what's left is what you WON'T get done. Best of Luck!
I would imagine if you came across a really nice 671 you’d grab it and just rebuild on a cradle then when you need it just swap it out ? It’s really frustrating to have to depend on other people to maintain a good work schedule, at least it is for me working on outboards ! Fingers Crossed 🤞
Amazing that you and your son can rebuild the engine on the curb beside your home. Nice innovation to be able to custom fabricate tools to access those difficult fasteners hidden within the deep recesses of the engine. May I suggest finding another machine shop service provider. If they know ahead of time on the day the head should be ready, would it be too much to ask for if they Called You to inform you of the delay, instead of you contacting them? It's a competitive world, sir, I would not give them another opportunity to postpone your important schedules with their incompetence. They need to be men of their words,deeds; and actions. Their actions, or lack thereof, do not speak of professional business policies. Like the inferior Mac tool that broke, and your decision to use Craftsman instead, you have options at your disposal. Your parts supplier may be able to ship via DHL, never had a problem with them delivering my electronic components overnight, usually in less than 24 hours. Good Luck.
I used to donate blood frequently until a decade ago when RedCross rejected me trying to give my 80th pint. So I remain at 79 pints, or one pint short of 10 gallons. I always said if you reject me once, you reject me for life. So far I have never gone back.
Next time you donate blood (or are about to get a finger stick for any reason), tell the nurse to go off to the side of your finger. There’s far less nerve endings so it’s not sore for the rest of the day. As a diabetic of nearly 44 years doing glucose blood tests multiple times daily I’ve got some experience in this area.

I donated blood for years. Over 2 gallons in 5 different states. (I'm a long distance truck driver) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to for several years because my blood wouldn't be safe for a woman who is or could become pregnant. This is because of a medication I'm on for bph.
"I do a lot of stuff with my fingers, so I feel the sting, like, every time" (I hope I'm getting that right, the nurse's voice wasn't very clear). I once donated blood and did my shopping on my way home from work, noticed there was a sale on red chilli peppers, bought a batch and, unthinkingly, went to de-seed and chop them up for freezing after supper. It was fine at first because the pricked finger was on my knife hand, but then I realised my mistake and it just wouldn't go away.... yeah.
My wife and I donated both whole blood and platelets for many years until I had prostate pre-cancer, which was misdiagnosed as cancer. And after a hiatus for the 'cancer', we just got out of the habit.
"There's a right way and there's a wrong way, and I'm doing it the imbetween way" now that couldnt be any closer to me, hell that would make a good sticker.
Yeah, donating blood. I went into that full blast, began when I was 18. My Dad did it for years, so I got into it too. Used to be the Red Cross handled that in Canada, but they ended up handing over blood donations and that end of the biz to CBS, Canadian Blood Services. At first, they accepted me as a walk-in like they way it had always been before, but they began to hassle me that I should make an appointment, rather than just showing up. Well, my job is rather "on-call", so I don't always have the luxury of making an appointment unless it's made weeks in advance and they can cover my spot at work. I got rather annoyed that they were calling me every week, leaving messages to make an appointment, so after the 4th time I showed up when it was convenient FOR ME and getting resistance, I decided that was enough. I made a total of 37 donations before they cheesed me off for good. We don't get paid for our blood up here, I was doing it for the same reasons that most others do it, and that's because people need it, I had it, I was healthy and willing. But not willing to put up with the deterrent of being told to make an appointment. Screw you, I was willing to line up like everyone else did it for all those years and years, and I would still happily line up and wait my damn turn. Stick your "appointment" crap where the sun don't shine. And that's all I have to say about that.

Pressure check that braze with a little bit of soapy water and a little air or hook that vacuum gauge up to it.

If you want the equivalent for non liner engines machine a fire ring into the head or block. Then enjoy the added problems/complications associated.
glad to see you fitting the liners properly. seen it done incorrectly and the DO get hot. haste makes waste. I believe you will get over a hundred easily the way you watch your equipment

Machine Shops have schedules to keep and I've had issues with EVERYONE I've ever used. However, I've found with ALL of them that you can have work done Cheap/Fast/Professional.... Pick any two of the three and what's left is what you WON'T get done. Best of Luck!

I would imagine if you came across a really nice 671 you’d grab it and just rebuild on a cradle then when you need it just swap it out ? It’s really frustrating to have to depend on other people to maintain a good work schedule, at least it is for me working on outboards ! Fingers Crossed 🤞

Amazing that you and your son can rebuild the engine on the curb beside your home. Nice innovation to be able to custom fabricate tools to access those difficult fasteners hidden within the deep recesses of the engine. May I suggest finding another machine shop service provider. If they know ahead of time on the day the head should be ready, would it be too much to ask for if they Called You to inform you of the delay, instead of you contacting them? It's a competitive world, sir, I would not give them another opportunity to postpone your important schedules with their incompetence. They need to be men of their words,deeds; and actions. Their actions, or lack thereof, do not speak of professional business policies. Like the inferior Mac tool that broke, and your decision to use Craftsman instead, you have options at your disposal. Your parts supplier may be able to ship via DHL, never had a problem with them delivering my electronic components overnight, usually in less than 24 hours. Good Luck.

I used to donate blood frequently until a decade ago when RedCross rejected me trying to give my 80th pint. So I remain at 79 pints, or one pint short of 10 gallons. I always said if you reject me once, you reject me for life. So far I have never gone back.
A schedule can head south very quickly when you are relying on ours to keep on your time line.
In my prior career as an EMT, I was in charge of a 20 patient AMBUS. A very cool purpose built bus, used in mass casualty incidents.

Next time you donate blood (or are about to get a finger stick for any reason), tell the nurse to go off to the side of your finger. There’s far less nerve endings so it’s not sore for the rest of the day. As a diabetic of nearly 44 years doing glucose blood tests multiple times daily I’ve got some experience in this area.
The stash of blood at a few hospitals , 3 blood banks and complete strangers walking around the hospital saved by life one night.thanks to all who donate.

I donated blood for years. Over 2 gallons in 5 different states. (I'm a long distance truck driver) Unfortunately, I haven't been able to for several years because my blood wouldn't be safe for a woman who is or could become pregnant. This is because of a medication I'm on for bph.
"I do a lot of stuff with my fingers, so I feel the sting, like, every time" (I hope I'm getting that right, the nurse's voice wasn't very clear).
I once donated blood and did my shopping on my way home from work, noticed there was a sale on red chilli peppers, bought a batch and, unthinkingly, went to de-seed and chop them up for freezing after supper. It was fine at first because the pricked finger was on my knife hand, but then I realised my mistake and it just wouldn't go away.... yeah.

My wife and I donated both whole blood and platelets for many years until I had prostate pre-cancer, which was misdiagnosed as cancer. And after a hiatus for the 'cancer', we just got out of the habit.
have them test on a ear lobe instead of a finger it doesn't hurt as much and you don't have a wound in a sensitive area

Yeah, donating blood. I went into that full blast, began when I was 18. My Dad did it for years, so I got into it too. Used to be the Red Cross handled that in Canada, but they ended up handing over blood donations and that end of the biz to CBS, Canadian Blood Services. At first, they accepted me as a walk-in like they way it had always been before, but they began to hassle me that I should make an appointment, rather than just showing up. Well, my job is rather "on-call", so I don't always have the luxury of making an appointment unless it's made weeks in advance and they can cover my spot at work. I got rather annoyed that they were calling me every week, leaving messages to make an appointment, so after the 4th time I showed up when it was convenient FOR ME and getting resistance, I decided that was enough. I made a total of 37 donations before they cheesed me off for good. We don't get paid for our blood up here, I was doing it for the same reasons that most others do it, and that's because people need it, I had it, I was healthy and willing. But not willing to put up with the deterrent of being told to make an appointment. Screw you, I was willing to line up like everyone else did it for all those years and years, and I would still happily line up and wait my damn turn. Stick your "appointment" crap where the sun don't shine. And that's all I have to say about that.
