    At 71 years of age, i`d never have thought I would learn so much about Detroit 6.71 engines as I do most days just Listening and watching you Scott, so thank you for that.. That feeling of the first start after a rebuild always got my heart pumping listening for any not normal noises..Hope its up and running soon for you mate..

      I always thought that first start after a rebuild was stressful, and for the first week or so after I'd overanalyze every little noise convincing myself something isn't right when it was really fine lol

    Well today I learned that I am definitely buying something with a 71 series Detroit, That UPS sucks as bad in the US as it does here in Aus, That Im not the only Dad who has a long suffering Son I feel the need to pass knowledge on to and who will take the hits his Poor old Dad isnt inclined to take like lying on the cold wet ground.
    I also learned that im not the only doofus who prelubed his entire toolbox but my bottle was way bigger (Coz downunder).
    Scott your 'dead cat' New Mic is working really well and theres zero wind noise at your workbench (And outside the other day) and that BGM Video's are almost a therapeutic replacement for the now finished Planesavers DC-3 restoration TH-cam series although that whole pratt and whitney radial engine sound under power is hard to replace but Screamin jimmies will do nicely in a pinch.
    Meanwhile i will console myself with a Boring all alloy 215 cu inch V8 alloy Buick Range rover project....

    Here's a tip for your consideration: when inspecting the con rods, hold the wrist pin end up to the light and look thru the oil passage from the rod bearing saddle...you can determine if there is a slight bend in the rod.

      True but they are floating a whole new set out on their dime until the UPS investigation is complete. Paying for the upgraded shipping is a small price to pay to finally get the darn things. A lot of companies wouldn't have sent another set out unless Scott was willing to pay for the second set (to be refunded after the claim is paid) so still good on PC industries.

    When you load the liners, if you will put the liner on the floor, and stand over the liner as you push the piston into the liner in one smooth motion, it is much easier and quicker. I was taught that method when I was a young mechanic working for the Detroit Diesel distributor in Texas.

    Hey Scott, I don’t often comment but really enjoy your channel. I have been working as a diesel mechanic for 25 years. In my opinion, at least some if not all of the funny wear on those rod and main bearings could be attributed to the crack in the oil pickup that has been repaired. Also I wouldn’t sweat that one liner that’s a little slack. I work on large marine medium speed engines, but have been in many a jimmy throughout my career. Thanks and good job! Good luck with UPS! I stopped using them due to overpricing and the arrogance the of UPS management (the UPS drivers have been very good) when something like losing a package occurs. I suspect they'll come back and say the package wasn't properly prepared and they'll deny the insurance. UPS's insurance is run out of the Caymen Islands.
    BTW... UPS 3 day "ground" is actually air shipping. They charge an air freight fuel surcharge on 3 day ground shipments. It costs almost the same as 2 day air.

One 55.00 part holding up a several million dollar operation, but we did it. Now next day to me is a damn miracle. Just take a deep breath and thank god there a smart people out there to get our stuff next day air.

    Just a tip. If you can twist the pistons in the liners you can be sure an oil control ring didn’t break. You pretty much can tell if you break one when you load it in the liner. The piston is not able to spin if you break a ring.

  • @theshyguitarist

    Run shell rotella and add a zinc additive. But the rotella full synth should get you the protection you need for those bearings. In leu of the zinc, I use Militec-1 in all my vehicles. It actually impregnates all the bearing surfaces and prevents metal to metal contact. My Toy Tacoma is running strong still on that combo. 400k miles. No leaks and full compression.

    • @DougHanchard
      @DougHanchard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      2 strokes run hotter than modern 4 stroke diesels. You can't compare a Tacoma to a 671 in any way. Very different bearing clearances, surface temperatures and torque loads.

    • @theshyguitarist
      @theshyguitarist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DougHanchard Clearly, you know that there are differences. That's awesome. But Shell Rotella is a diesel engine specific oil. Google would have helped with that.

    • @DougHanchard
      @DougHanchard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@theshyguitarist Okay, I'll come out and say it, as much as I use Shell Rotella products in some engines (Cummins, Cats, etc), I prefer to use another brand in 671s for the reasons I mentioned. These engines get used hard and don't have the same fuel efficiency as other DD engines. They were a great low rpm / city engine but for the open road, in my opinion, they just wear out faster and part of the issue is oil quality and the massive bearing surfaces that have a hard time staying cool.

  • @Mercmad
    @Mercmad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    On medium speed diesel engines I have seen cavitation damage on wet liners which was caused by a broken piston ring. The end of the ring runs hotter as combustion gas leaks past. This creates a steam pocket on the outside of the liner ,in the coolant. It erodes the liner wall in a line as the piston goes travels .Eventually a pin hole develops dumping coolant into the liner. We would see these tiny holes when using a endoscope to investigate hot running. Sometimes it was only when the engine was cold and being barred over with the ports opened that the leaks were obvious with a stream of alfloc squirting out the port. Not good. Or if a engineer decided to simply start the engine without barring it over.....clunk!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
    That Rod bearing with the odd wear looks like the rod may be twisted. Next time it is out it may pay to get it checked.

    The wet liner isn't a bad system, except that many are very old now. Miles can be very low, but age is relevant, too. I believe that the age of the o-rings affects reliability. So many people who believe that they "need a new head gasket" really have a bad o-ring or rings. Could be very frustrating to have an older 92 series engine with "low mileage," and discover coolant in the oil!

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Age is the problem. A 71 cam did for 10 years and no issues, a 92 is about 50/50 for coolant in the oil

I’d rather try the chance that it might break VS i know i will break it. I may attach a feather to the back as a safety

      @@BusGreaseMonkey yeah, you'd think Scott. I had to look elsewhere too for good DD parts. Just cause its more expensive doesnt mean its good. the same with being too cheap either. You'd think you'd be paying for good QA. hopefully they wont lose your new inj.

    I doubt it's the propane hurting the rod bearings, more likely hours of high rpm highways. Looks like you need an overdrive, or larger diameter drive tyres.

    Do your connecting rods only go on the piston wrist pin one way to get the thrust side where it belongs? Maybe not on a two-stroke?
    You produce excellent content and I look forward to the next! Another job well done!

    I was so disappointed to hear genuine Detroit parts are inferior and have parts missing from the kits. WTF has happened to American industry? We used to be the gold standard the rest of the world looked up to, now we can't even make repair parts?! Have we become a I-can't-be-bothered-throw-it-away-and-put-in-a-crate-motor society? Kudos to the Indians for making high quality parts and making sure everything is included! We need to learn from them!

    Those wrist pin plugs might also be to stop blower air getting into the crankcase.

      Oil pressure 40psi, airbox pressure is super low, just above atmospheric. More like keeping oil out of the airbox.

    • @ThePaulv12
      @ThePaulv12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BusGreaseMonkey If all that's holding 40psi oil pressure back is a set of thin interference fit steel cups I'd be worried they'd be hydrauliced out and the motor would loose oil pressure.

      But it doesn't have full oil gallery pressure there though does it? It's more directed splash cooled - perhaps I'm wrong.

    Have you used a ring expander? I've found they speed things up s lot and with very little chance of breaking the ring.

    • @4321grp
      @4321grp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not needed on Detroit rings, they're easy to install by hand

      I thought the same thing. So much more control with a ring expander less chance of breaking a ring. And less chance of missing up the oil control ring

  • @yardlimit8695
    @yardlimit8695 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    , how is it that you have the special tool to set the wrist pin retainer and you don't have a ring expander, .it makes the job so much easier and no chance of over expanding the rings . also, did i miss something or what,,,,,,,,i didn't see you make any measurements in the block bore to see what size replacement liners you should use......if i remember correctly, there were 16 measurements and then you took the average to pick standard or oversize or whatever

      Allway check the gap.. just put tbe rings on tbe culinder minus the piston. I use the.piston to push dwn tbe rings. Into a emty bore. Pull out . Then measure the gap..u do t need a bunch fancy tools.. lol.. if your in the bush . Just eyeball it

    What was your main reason for going with older style trunk pistons? The higher RPMs you are typically running? The crossheads should have lower oil consumption and wear right? Are the more of a pain to install even if they last longer? I might have a lead on a 4106 so am reading up on the 71 series (previously mainly interested in 53 series for a truck swap I haven't completed yet... I've heard of pulling engines in the 53 series using trunk pistons for high RPMs (around 5k on a 453T if I remember correctly of course the wear is porportionally worse at high RPMs as well as broken cranks becoming a factor I think the guy had an 8v71 turbo on his 453 which is pretty much insane).

    Does Detroit recommend using a coating on the dry liners to aid in heat transfer from the liner to the block? Many of you liner/sleeve manufacturers for gas applications do.
