  • MICHAE L SPYRES singing Alfredo's aria and cabaletta ("Dei miei bollenti spiriti ... O mio rimorso") from Giuseppe Verdi's Opera LA TRAVIATA, recorded in Tokyo in September 2007. Since this is a video from the dress rehearsal, in which he did not sing the optional top C at the end of the cabaletta I have added a short clip from a performance filmed from backstage, including the top c.

That's the only time I've heard this cabaletta sung with all the little notes perfectly sung. He's amazing.

Have you ever heard Alfredo Kraus' Traviata? Both Kraus and Spyres are wonderful tenors.

At that time (1958) he was quite young and his Alfredo was really successful.

I guess they might refer to some less satisfactory execution of a few phrases especially at 5:44, where most tenors usually sing the high note. He seemed to show some fatigue in this part.

That he doesn’t sing the c .. that is actually not written doesn’t bother in my opinion. What is more astonishing is that he doesn’t cover the voice. He somehow squeezes the vocal chords to sing high pitch. More like Florenz technique. In my opinion the voice could be nicer with a covered Passagio.

@@johannesgrau5956 Perhaps the conductor didn't allow him to sing the C. In the Traviata in 2013 at La Scala, Muti also didn't allow Beczala to sing it!

The voice is just GORGEOUS!!!! So natural, so uncomplicated, so beautiful. Please be inspired by the career of Alfredo Kraus. I'd love to hear Michael sing Mozart, French repertoire and some Donizetti - I can just hear Nemorino! Bravo.

Agreed--many worthy Alfredo tenors--but how many can do Roaul de Nangis or the Rossini "Otello" as well as this, or his ventures into Haedel, Mozart. Extraordinary versatility of voice and I think just in his early thirties.

Saludos,

The weight thing is not helped by horrid costuming! A big diaphragm and some weight to carry the voice BUT a skin tight waistcoat in nasty peach taffeta helps no one! See him do Plus Blanche from Les Hugenots also on youtube. I hope he is destined for a good French opera career. Lets hope he doesn't try to be just another tenor doing Turandot etc.
