This song gets better the more you listen to it and the more you reflect on how often we all feel "saudade" but are at a loss of words for how to express this feeling. A brilliant blend of English and Portuguese as a beautiful meta commentary on Eurovision itself. Eurovision songs often are written in English to be more "accessible". And this song starts in English to draw listeners in. While the English in this song is still impactful, it's when the song transitions to Portuguese that we find the deepest beauty in this song. There truly is no way to describe, in English, the feeling of Saudade. Such simple yet effective production. Absolutely beautiful.

I think saudade has something in common with slavic definition of nostalgia. Or at least that's how I explain it to myself 😊

It also exists in Galician, but some people don't even consider Portuguese and Galician to be entirely separate, so, yeah, one could say it exists only in the Portuguese-Galician continuum.

As far as I understand it (not speaking either language), Saudade in Portuguese is similar to Hiraeth in Welsh - a feeling of nostalgia, yearning or homesickness for something that you can't return to, or something that will never return, or maybe even something that never really existed. It's a beautiful concept that I think we can all relate to - but that only a couple of languages are lucky enough to have a word for.

    • @VeraCasaca
      @VeraCasaca 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Spot on. It means longing, missing with great nostalgia. We only have that word to represent it. We don't have the "simple" missing word. So it's deeper.

I love this kind of Portuguese music so much. To me, there is even some African beats in it, and the melody actually even sounds Asian to me, or even Native American somehow … But it might just be that it’s the traditional Celtic folk elements that have all this in them. Somehow I also imagine Portuguese traditional music would have some influence from the world, because of Portugal’s history. Anyway, a truly unique and very beautiful both song and performance!

Thank you so much . That is the point, the world needs peace and this nostalgic song is definitely a peace appealing song, very simple, very honest, very humble. It talks about feelings, about the sadness and emptiness that Maro is feeling about losing her best friend, her grandfather. No fireworks, no frantic dances, just herself, the audience, her grandfather and emotions. Very portuguese but universal at the same time.
    Thank you so much.

Saudade is a unique word which has no translation. Saudade is a very deep feeling that can make you feel a mix of feelings like joy or sadness or nostalgia or both for example. Sometimes it feels like a rollercoaster of feelings. It can be so many things.Saudade makes you travel through time, through moments, places, people that touched you heart and most of the time are no longer with you. I could write a more than a thousand words and still, they wouldn't be enough to explain. This song is a big tribute, so deep on its message, so simple yet so powerful

Saudade is a term derived from the Lusitanian culture, first Galician and Portuguese, which indicates a form of melancholy, a feeling of nostalgia. Etymologically, it derives from the Latin solitude, solitudinis, solitude, isolation and greetings, greetings and greetings. In some ways, saudade is a kind of nostalgic reminder, affecting a special good that is absent, accompanied by a desire to relive it or to possess it. In many cases, there is almost a mystical dimension, such as acceptance of the past and faith in the future. Thx

The only song this year to make me cry TWICE! It gives me that emotional reaction and so therefore it's my number 1 this year! This performance you saw was the winning performance after she had been confirmed to win and be sent to Turin. Saudade, Saudade doesn't directly translate to 'Longing' in English. It kind of doesn't have one set meaning in English, hence the 'nothing more that I can say, says it in a better way'.

She reminds me of Dido. Beautiful, beautiful voice. You are right about it sounding like a Celtic folk song, and that's because Portugal has a strong Celtic tradition and heritage. If you compare traditional Fado singing with Irish Sean Nós singing you will notice the obvious similarities and the common roots of both folk styles. In 1998 Portugal's entry was a Celtic folk song. "Se eu te pudesse abraçar", by Alma Lusa

Georgina, it's curious that you found it Celtic somehow. And yes, the Lusitanians or the 1st Portuguese, were Celts and they lived in Western Iberian peninsula 7.000 years ago and some scientists defend that the Celts were original from that territory and they sailed from there to the British Islands.
Anyway, MARO has a deep smooth beautiful voice and she has been creating her musical career since at least 6 years ago and during this pandemic she asked many artists to join her online for a duet, including some celebrities as Eric Clapton.
Now she became known because she won the representation of her country in Eurovision Song Contest with this simple and lovely song "saudade, saudade" in memory to her lost grandfather. It is a very Mediterranean song, almost folkloric and she asked many singers to join her. Again, Portugal is gonna make the difference with a song straight to the heart of the audience, the monkey's competition does not matter at all.

Nothing that says about the origins of the Celts is correct, neither the date nor the geographical origin. The history of pre-Celtic peoples dates back as far as 1200 BC (3200 years ago) in Eastern Europe. Indo-European peoples.

Fo me, this song shows a new generation with a very "Indigo" vibe to it. There is peace, softness and deepness. I think that we, the Portuguese are not very well understood most of the time. We have very deep feelings that sometimes cannot be translated into words or even into tears, Sometimes we feel so much pain that we cannot even cry or sometimes we feel a fist around the heart that make it difficult to breath. We carry the love and the strenght of our antcestors upon our shoulders and we always maintain a love/hatred relationship with the sea. We have a very special relationship with the elements (we feel that it is a part of our human nature) but out deepest passion lies in the sea. There were so many peple that died on shipwrecks, so many brave people that sailed the seas to discover new worlds... and we love beaches, rivers and the food that the waters offer us. Portuguese people have around 95 percent of water in their bobies and in their souls as well. I love being Portuguese! We are a nation of true poets.

I love the Celtic sound and for me it is the flowing 6/4 Rhythm that adds to the magic of this song, like a boat floating on the sea, and bobbing up and down with the small waves taking you into the sunset. In Portugal we speak portuguese :) The song is about the loss of her grandfather.

Saudade is more than sadness. It includes the sadness of missing something or someone but also the joy of the memory. Missing is bad, having "Saudades" is good. It means your sowl is feed. It is a word born in the heart of people who saw husband's going to the sea, a sun going to the war, family migrating, but kept the hope in the return and/or the memory of love.

I love the fact that you made a connection to Celtic folk song because although Portugal speaks a neo-Latin language due to being conquered by Rome, its essence and the "saudade" culture comes exactly from its Celtic roots (via the Gallaeci, Lusitani, Celtici, Turdulii and Conii peoples). The Fado music, for an instance, has this melancholy to it which is a direct reflection of the Celtic substract that lives on to these days within the Portuguese people, in their songs and, also, in their language. They sing about loss, about the longing of those that are gone and left to the sea. They play their traditional bagpipes, dance the "Dança dos Paus" (Stick Dance) and play the Caretos in the northern region. The relationship Portugal has with the sea is very similar that of the Irish people when they sing their folk songs. Portugal is a country of Celtic and Pre-Celtic origins and so you're completely spot on!! Love from Brazil. 💚

"In her presentation video, Maro revealed that she wrote "saudade, saudade" to remember her grandfather, who recently died. "It wouldn't make much sense not to be me singing such a personal theme", stressed the artist. Maro is the artistic name of Mariana Secca, from Lisbon, who grew up in a family environment marked by music, began studying piano at age four, attended the conservatory and studied at Berklee School in Boston, United States. In many cases, there is almost a mystical dimension, such as acceptance of the past and faith in the future." Ricardo Veloso

    Hello Georgina!
The song is dedicated to the late grandfather who died recently.
He was everything to her. It was her haven. Her best friend.
A song full of feeling, charm, class and harmony very well defined and characteristic of Portuguese traits.
I loved your reaction to this piece of music. I don't know if you know the song by Dulce Pontes - Amor a Portugal, I would love for you to hear it and also to react to this song.
It is the second Portuguese national anthem where it shows and symbolizes the Portuguese soul and heart.
Cheers from Portugal and the best of luck for your channel 🙏❤️

MARO is only the singer in the middle. The background singers are friends of her that the public asked her to bring to the stage cause it would make the performance better (and for sure they will go to Turin too). Now the song is inspired by her grandfather, idk the background about it but she feels an emotion that there’s only a single word to describe it “Saudade” (which is only translated in Portuguese). So basically the song is around that feeling and tries to explain it the better it can. I think it’s a great song, hope it does well, and the HARMONIES!! 🤌

Thank you for your reaction! The key part of the song is the title Saudade, which you translate to longing. Saudade is more than that, it's a deep feeling of nostalgia that is at same time happy and sad. That's why she sings in English in the beginning, to show how difficult it is to express that feeling in any English words, because Saudade is non translatable :)

Saudade means so much more than longing… it has this melancholy and hollowness feeling to it.
I love how Maro wrote a song for her diseased grandpa without actually mentioning directly in the lyrics.
As for ressonance: European Portuguese isn’t spoken with a lot of ressonance. We actually “omit” some vogals here and there, like “el’s” (eles, meaning they), “olh’s” (olhos, eyes), and so one. It’s a very unique sound to our language, like a humming, but it kind of creates some issues when singing - I don’t understand a lot of lyrics some classical singers sing in Portuguese with a lirical style and open vowels! It just doesn’t sound right…
Maro’s voice suits the music. But this is maybe why they sound better in the Portuguese part.

Even though this beautiful song is about Maro (beautiful girl from Lisboa-Portugal) and her feelings about missing her dear grandfather and also a friend, the good memories he left for her... war in which Europe and the world suffer negative consequences, where they are lost (by death) and so many family and friends are divided, especially in Europe, due to the residential/cultural destruction and the massacre that is happening in Ukraine, this song Portuguese ("Saudade Saudade" so well interpreted by Maro and her colleagues) appears as an embrace of love, warmth, solidarity, union, inner joy and calm or peace... same peace that Portugal now gives to Europe and the world, through this beautiful music, warm, meditative, deep, healing and full of harmony and subjective hope within a mystical freedom of shared concrete peace!!... Thank you for the nice reaction!! Amazing song Portugal 💜☮️ beautiful, quality!! Ah... "SAUDADE" in addition to meaning a melancholy feeling due to death (here remembering the good times spent together with the grandfather) or inner joy; or the simple removal of a person, a thing or a place, or the absence of pleasurable experiences already lived is, at the same time, a sincere and deep desire for all this!... For a warm hug, to be loved, to a joyful, unique, harmonious and peaceful space. That's why you can also send a lot of "SAUDADES" to a girlfriend/boyfriend, family or friends!... I'm Angolan and Portuguese descent; now living in Switzerland for 12 years now; but I am attentive to the country (Portugal) that knew how to welcome and love me as a refugee from war, where I studied, formed my personality and made great friends. I love you Portugal!! 😍😘🥳🥰💖❤️

Yes, this has something shamanic, singing among women, hence the Celtic analogy, emphasizing that the north of Portugal, where the origin of the country starts, received these influences.
