Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his TH-cam channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover came about. In a nutshell "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing this song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. Then Ivan played the melody and Angelina says" good but slower, slower , even slower. OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand. 💯 *AJ* 💯 BTW, I read a comment a few years ago from a California medical officer stationed in Iraq. She reported that since she and her comrades heard this cover by Angelina for the first time, the song played again and again, every day and her tears also ran, a mixture of a little sadness and a lot of joy, the soldier described it as a warm hug from home . I would like Angelina to find out about her serious positive influence on her fans🤗
I never heard all this before, but it makes perfect sense. I've said many times that I think when she hears a song for the first time it whispers to her that now she should sing it the way it was meant to be sung, and she does. It also elicits much the same feeling in me, with most of her songs, as described by the medical officer. "a little sadness and a lot of joy"
I’m old enough to love the original California Dreamin and the beautiful harmonies and sound of the Mamas and the Papas. They exploded onto the amazing music scene of the mid 60’s. What Angelina did with California Dreamin is what she does with other iconic songs that might be considered untouchable-like Bohemian Rhapsody or Billie Jean. She gives us a stunning new version that never competes with the original, but respects it while showing us a new way to love the song. You’re absolutely right. Angelina is not only a singer with an voice that can melt you, but she’s a musician-big time-who has an incredible ear and musicality that’s off the charts. Her interpretation of lyrics is so clear and genuine: despite the unique musical vibe of the Mamas and the Papas, these lyrics are melancholy. And nobody expresses that better than Angelina. Just another beautiful re-interpretation of a classic by the best singer I’ve ever heard.
A great Creator, she always finds a new perspective of view a song 😎 In an interview she stated .. it's harder to make a good cover than an own Song, because the listeners compare it to the original
Angelina doesn't have to impress us with her vocal talent and she knows it. And here she proves it. Just her voice and a gitaar with a willing player. I'm sure she has a full and professional team behind her, but as a member of the orchestra said when she was 7: she is the boss. Thank God, so no blasting orchestra or flashing lights. That is for the minor gods. Oh and don't forget her smile which can melt a plaster saint. Thank you Seb.
I can't pick my favorite because each and every performance is a testimony to the fact that Angelina Jordan is not of this world, she is like nothing that has ever existed in the past or is likely to in the future. We are so lucky to be in this time and place in the midst of this phenomenal STORYTELLER, and she is only 16. She is a song writers dream come true, both for those written in the past and those to be written in the future.
When I heard her sing this, a favorite of mine, it was the first time I actually understood the story, the lyrics tells. She has skills that haven’t even been dreamed of before she came along. Yes her cuteness is as wonderful to behold as her artistry. Great reaction. 🎉
Thanks Sebs, beautiful reaction. Angelina's musical vision transcends the ordinary and she always manages to give an interpretive reading that makes us better understand and love the songs, in any age she is. This gorgeous girl truly has a musical knowledge and analytical ability that is beyond my comprehension. Her vision of the Californian dreams, simply mesmerizing! 💛🧡❤
She arranges these songs on the spur of the moment, and the list of the many she's done that are in different genres truly astound me. You've got professional people that need countless takes to try in coming up with something this beautifully intricate and complex, and to be honest, I'd be hard pressed to find one as good as she is in doing it. And no way would it be in a 'one take' fashion' like she is able to do. Well, what do you expect from a baby who's 3rd language is English and is able to retain lyrics and apply the proper tune of the song vocally beginning when she was, as she has stated, 'beginning at 1-1/2' ?
Angelina is the goddess of music and vocal, nobody can tell a story like angelina, also this song is now a masterpiece for ever, she is pur love and soul and yes always such a lovely and humble smile t👑o us all♥️🌹💫 great reaction 😊
It's why I say "World changer" Because I how she changes reactors and I know, because she changed me! How many has she changed so far? There is something about her that's magical.
Yes, "she makes it sad," you said. True, it's like she has for a long time been longing for a visit to the land where she was born but knows that she never will. It's genial and an almost unbelievable experience for listeners sensitive to her voice.
Hello, Sebs. Ivan Mendez on the guitar--another one of these informal one-take sessions. But this is the best cover. I've always heard the longing in the song. She's genius in getting to the heart of a song's story and main emotion. I love this. Now when I think of this song, I hear Angelina's voice and version. The Mamas and Papas were the originators. Thanks, and keep on walking, Sir. Grandma Ellen, ho-ho-ho! 💜🤶
Sebs, where did Angelina's emotion come from in this song? Her uncle/manager Michael tells how Angelina had wanted to move to California to pursue her dreams but that the time seemed to never come for her. Finally one day Michael told her that everything was in place and they could all move to LA. She was ecstatic! The first slower, sadder part of the song represents her longings before the move and the OG version, after. IMO.
Yes Barry, you got that right! Here she is living in California, enjoying the warm climate, remembering the previous winter in Norway when the move to LA was only in her dreams...
Amazes me how the very moment she begins to sing, she is 100% invested. Total conviction to her craft and yet has this ability, either during brief pauses of the song, or at the end, she becomes her very normal, sweet, humble 12yr old self. I don’t think I could ever get tired of AJ
You will love Something’s Got A Hold On Me that she sang in 2017 at a festival in Norway. Actually this whole festival is simply amazing. You will love the band also! This is where she sang Diamonds Are Forever-WOW!
You know, I really enjoy your reactions. You obviously have a great connection to Angelina. I've spent hours watching our barefoot princess. I'm not sure why it took me so long to realize this. I easily spend 5 hrs a day watching Angelina and reactions of her. I could go to the gym, get on a treadmill and watch Angelina. I can be happy watching our sweet girl and get some exercise. Two rights make a win. Thanks Sebs
That's the fascinating things about prodigies, which Angelina is. Just as Alma Deutscher (17) started playing piano at 2, wrote a sonata at 5, mini opera at 7 and a full opera at 11, now composer, conductor and plays the piano and violin at master level. Angelina started singing at 18 months old. Angelina's voice is her instrument, she writes, rearranges and plays her voice masterfully, changing it to fit each song. With heartfelt emotions that would make you think she was the original singer/songwriter.
"Sweet Moses, Bro!" Yeah, Sebs, this one threw me for a loop when I first heard it. Made me forget the original completely. So lovely and melancholy. Another song, another cover ... another one she owns. All when wearing a cartoon duck top! Thanks for continuing to react to AJ, Sebs. Cheers. 😇
I’ve watched so many channels reviewing singers Angelina is amazing but your honest reactions are what brings me back!,im now a great fan of yours from Exeter in England!x❤️❤️🎸🎸
When Angelina was young she attending the Oslo Academy of Music after her normal school day. Here she learnt to play the guitar, piano, flute and violin but more importantly she learnt how to deconstruct a song and recreate it. This is a classic example of this skill which she has famously used on Bohemian Rhapsody and Suspicious Minds.
Very melancholic, right? But when you read the lyrics, you see that she is quite right in her interpretation! The Mamas and the Papas were a great 60's pop group, but this is mind-blowing. Singing in a Donald Duck outfit no less! (BTW. do check out the mashup...it's valid! Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/oO-vTz5wyyM/w-d-xo.html )

♥♥♥ Great reaction, Sebs, despite (because of ? ) the heavy self-sensorship. I wouldn't really mind hearing some more of your singing background for example. I get it, it's an Angelina reaction, but still I think some more knowledge about your background would lend even more credence to your comments in a way. Just my thoughts 🙂 Love from Norway ♥♥♥

Hi there everyone can have a opinion - you said this song dont impress you - maybe look into other Performances of Angelina and name other Artists from age 6 to 16 who come close to her - cheers from Germany
You have a pretty common I noticed everybody's catching onto Steve calloway has it right. It's not about you it's about her and I am struggling to see her because you're bigger than she is what it would be like if you want no offense intended but you guys do that I never seen the video before I like to see it Steve calloway had a little corner of the video for him
Angelina ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The best ever
Yeah that Mona Lisa smile of Angelina will get you every time.
Wonderful!
So beautiful it hurts !!!
Angelina's arrangement of and connection with this song leaves me speechless. Only Angelina can do this, and she will do it again and again.
wasn't this a Mama's and the papa's song in the 70's?
@@patkiser4062 Yes, you're right.
100% Agree. She has me utterly captivated from start to end. Any thoughts I may have, completely out the window from the moment she begins to sing.
This is how this song should have always been sung! It is a sad song..listen to the words.

Sad and longing fit the lyrics perfectly. A problem?
She sang "Yesterday" in a melancholy fashion as well and, IMO, truer to the lyrics than the writers of the song who sang it in a more upbeat way.

Just a quick bit of background trivia on the mash-up with Chris Stapleton and Angelina. Chris Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey," was released in 2015. It was noted online as: "The song's melody is an almost note-for-note rendition of Etta James' song "I'd Rather Go Blind."." Someone thought to match up Angelina with Chris, but you can already see the issue. Chris Stapleton should be matched up with Etta James since he appropriated Etta's musical score.
When it comes to Angelina, she should be mashed-up with Etta James, not Chris Stapleton. To my knowledge, Angelina has never covered anything by Chris Stapleton; neither his music nor his lyrics. I have yet to read or hear if Chris Stapleton ever gives credit to Etta James (1938-2012) for the inspiration to his song, "Tennessee Whiskey." If you're picking up on a little angst from my end, it's all about Chris Stapleton simply using another artists music and calling it his own. At least he waited for 3 years after Etta's death before releasing "his" original hit.

No comparison. Sorry, I am not impressed with this version.
