I'm from the UK and this has blown my mind. I don't think I've ever been in a shop (besides small, local ones) that doesn't accept contactless/Apple Pay. The fact that you need to give away a load of your personal info just to shop there is a huge red flag to me. In my opinion it should not be allowed to track purchases and gather information, unless you give them permission via the use of a separate points app or something (like we have here)

I think a reason is, that in europe credit card fees are limited by law. Some smaller shops in germany do not accept credit cards, but accept german debit cards, because the fees are limited to 0.5 €. That is a reason why many shops accept card payments only above a certain ammount.

  • @themutedoutcasts
    @themutedoutcasts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2655

While credit card processing fees could be another reason on the list for Walmart I can confidently say it's definitely because it doesn't allow them to collect people's data. I used to work with credit card processing, when I tell you each individual Walmart processes MILLIONS on the daily from credit card transactions I am not kidding. Not just that, their processing fees percentages are often discounted too, they always tended to be lower than for other businesses. Fees are not the issue. Their unquenchable hunger for your data to market to you and sell it to third parties is the problem.

@@turtato2155 when you use contactless pay, all you’re doing is providing payment information. Not even your real card info is used, instead a transaction-specific, one-time code is generated to process the payment in order to reduce fraud. Whereas with their proprietary “payment apps” you have to create a profile and input any and all information they require which is just super convenient for them :)

This very excellently said. Many people don't know specific person data is one of the most valuable if not the most valuable commodity there is. What a billion people can be predicted to be enticed to buy on a weekly and daily basis is a pure cash machine. Apple is an oddity in this regard as they collect very little specific person data. To be sure, Apple does collect a lot of data in the form of anonymized data. This is not specific to a name but is collected as a general geo area and demo group data. This is valuable but is is not close to the value of the specific to the person data. And this specific to the person data is trying to be vacuumed up by almost every place someone frequents, most definitely including Walmart.

Samsung Pay was special in most markets because it worked by emulating the magnetic strip of a credit card (MST) rather than using NFC to process payments, meaning older card readers with no contactless option could still be paid using your phone and no physical card, so theoretically that should work at Wal-mart too. Key word is theoretically, as it turns out Wal-mart actually explicitly blocks Samsung Pay transactions and your payment will be declined if you try this at a register (I know from experience). Unfortunately Samsung has also since dropped MST from modern phones so now there's no reason not to use Google Pay on their phones.

I literally went to Walmart a few weeks ago, and looked to see if the contactless payment symbol was on the pin-pads. Sure enough, it wasn’t-which surprised me, considering that 85% of retailers do in fact support it. Even my local grocery store (which is _very_ small) supports it, and I use it a TON there with no issues whatsoever. And it’s all because of god damn _data greed_ that Walmart doesn’t support it. Screw them. Thank god I had my wallet on me that day, or I would’ve been screwed.

    It was really great.
But Apple (who was way late to the party) had to be Apple and brand their NFC payment offering "Apple Pay" instead of the already established "Tap to pay", suddenly the those handful of retailers who eventually joined CurrentC all slowly turned off their NFC functionality in their terminals.
They all tried their QR code based nonsense, which had a high failure rate, then a couple years later, they just jettisoned the CurrentC crap and turned the NFC back on in their payment readers.

I started reading up on Apple Pay a few months ago. The idea of using my iPhone to pay seemed so odd to me, but working in retail since 2016 and circumstances the past couple years sold me on it.
I've been legally blind since birth and 2 years ago, a bad infection took more of my sight. These payment terminals and stand-alones are all slightly different. The chip readers are usually on the bottom, but once I encountered one where the card went up top. After setting up Wallet, instead of fumbling with a card and trying to figure out the chip reader (and getting way too many card-read errors), I hold my phone up to the terminal, I get haptic feedback and audible signal when payment goes through, my receipt prints, and done.😁 And unlike a card, the phone doesn't transmit the number to the terminal. Occasionally, an email alert comes through at work warning us that card skimmers were discovered somewhere nearby. Scary stuff. I seldom shop at Walmart, and when I do, I pay cash.

In Australia unless a seller doesn’t have have a modern credit card terminal or is cash only everyone accepts NFC payments. They can just implement a card like nearly every other store does these days

Here in Austria, almost nobody pays with a credit card in a physical store, it’s all done by debit card, where money is withdrawn from the bank account directly. That’s what Apple Pay taps into here too. So since it only depends on the bank if they have Apple Pay support and if they do, you can use it in every store that accepts NFC payment with debit cards

In Canada they were one of the few remaining retailers without it - they did finally just recently add it though! Hopefully Walmart US will do the same.

The fact that the Walmart near my house still doesn't accept contactless pay is crazy. Ironically, the McDonalds inside of Walmart accepts twice the amount of ways to pay than Walmart does.
Harris Teeter also didn't accept Apple Pay as the standard up until a year ago.

What’s interesting is whilst in the UK Tesco has their own payment system (Pay Plus iirc, haven’t worked there in a while) they still take contactless including Apple Pay.

2-3% for physical transaction is pretty high. US being a big market should be competitive and lower their rates to entice/ encourage more cashless transactions especially from the retailers.

In the Netherlands Apple pay and Google pay are accepted in every single shop that accepts debit of credit card payments. And I've never seen a shop in the past few years where that isn't the case. The only place I had to use my actual card was at a gas station, where you had to insert your card before pumping gas, they didn't accept concactless payments there.

In Australia we have rewards cards to do that part for us. You can pay with cash and still get "tracked" through the rewards program separately if you scan your card. So you can have decent privacy should you chose to.

i pay thru cash and i have never ever owned the reward program cards. I could always recognize the game for what it was from jump street . coupons, discounts, rewarding cards and all that is low vibration sheit and it prevents people from focusing on acquiring quality food.
      .
when you buy bacon and sugar is a part of the composition and then you get offered 20% discount if you buy 2 for 3 then another discount thru a phony rewarding program . that's what's up . But like for real , for real.

Sometimes I forget my wallet, using cellphone to pay saves the day. Unless you are at Walmart. You need to go back home, or you can shop at their competitor that accept Apple Pay. In the end they loose a lot of business by not accepting Apple Pay.

Recently I have been trying to phase Walmart out of the stores I use/frequent because I’m am one of those idiots who lose things easily. Lost two wallets, one had my card in it so I’m thankful that contactless is a way for me to not bring it out.
The problem is Walmart sells a large variety of things and If I need a bunch of stuff, It makes sense to go to one store then spend extra the petrol for 3 stores.

Since the pandemic started I can count the number of times I've used cash on one hand, my iPhone and Apple Watch is loaded with my MasterCard and most times I just use my Apple Watch to pay for things. Here in Australia most businesses support contactless payment, this is usually done through a credit card, but now some banks are offering contactless payment using your bank account. And only one main stream retailer I can think of here has extra fees for using a credit card, which is only 0.5% or the purchase price.

Craig, you put all your eggs in one basket, until sheit hits the fan. For Cash until my ass is in the ground and credit card only when i absolutely have to because i've been thru all types of scenarios where cards weren't accepted , cashpoints were buggy , every doggone thing under the damned sun . Y'all be careful out there especially with excessive data collection.

I remember CurrentC & MCX; wondered what ever happened to them.
this is somewhat akin to the EV charging market, where at many locations you have to use a company's app to pay and can't just use a credit card or contactless payment. The EU and member countries are starting to regulate this and forcing the EV charging providers to make CC readers (at least contactless) available.
Here in the U.S. any company that accepts NEVI federal funding will have to do the same (yep, even Tesla). Their v4 chargers are just now starting to appear with pay terminals and screens. This will help for CCS vehicles that don't support Tesla's (currently proprietary) plug & charge.

Walmart Does Accept SAMSUNG PAY, just not Apple Pay
They don't accept Apple Pay, but they do support Samsung Pay using MST only (older Samsung devices that still use MST or Magnetic Secure Transmission instead of just NFC). Why is that, you ask? Samsung phones used to have a secret weapon feature that allowed their mobile payments to work in places where Google Pay and Apple Pay failed, which only used NFC. Apple devices, Google Pay devices, and newer Samsung devices only use Near Field Communication, or NFC, which sends a short-range wireless signal to a card reader that only newer credit card readers can detect. While MST can send the credit card reader a magnetic signal that can be detected by newer and older credit card readers, the magnetic signal from the device simulates the swipe of a physical credit card or simply makes the machine think you swiped a card. It's a shame Samsung removed MST from their newer models. I always get asked publicly why your Samsung phone works when my iPhone doesn't at Walmart.

That’s kinda sad as even regular supermarkets in Germany which support contactless payments accept Apple Pay and just gets recognized as a regular debit/credit card on the receipt.
And think about it…Germany used to have quite a bad credit/debit card acceptance not too long ago but now, all major retailers support any conventional payment method (credit/debit card…usually Visa/MasterCard but also JCB, AMEX, Discover and DinersClub, girocard, Google pay, Apple Pay, etc.)
