    I am what I am just blown away buy all the good information you've given. I just found your channel by accident, I can't wait for the next installment.
    By the way, you can make your own HDPE to make your molds.There are a lot of videos on U-Tube on how to recycle HDPE from old plastic jugs. I'm collecting now. I'll keep you informed. Thanks, Jim

      +jim renderer Jim: I use 1/2" sheet hdpe material for my molds they work great. If you can get a good mold out of the recycled material lots of luck. The possibilities would be endless. An injection mold would be awesome if you could figure it out. Most of the ones I have seen usually have voids and are not well formed. Can't wait to see your results.

    Those are some great tip's! Thanks for sharing them.
    Here are a couple more useful tips, rubbing alcohol and a paper towel works great for cleaning up excess epoxy (resin) and lastly, lightly chamfering the tip of the tube will help make it easier to insert into the blank and lightly scuff the rest of the tube helps give the adhesive a better bite.
    EDIT: Another low cost and effective mold making material is Coroplast (Corrugated plastic sheets used for signs) 4mm works the best and can used with hot glue for easy assembly.

    Great information. You lightly touched on one item that I have experienced with turning wood and acrylic pen blanks. After I have turned down the blanks and taken them off the mandrel I often find a small amount of the brass tube is sticking out of EACH END of the blank. It's like the blank has compressed. I take my hand chamfering tool and after a few turns it removes the protruding brass tube down to the blank so the various pen parts will seat against the wood or acrylic blank properly. I use the Penn State bushings that they sell with their pen kits and their technical people had no idea why this was happening. Any ideas of why this is happening or what I can do to avoid this happening? Thanks.

    • @dc9apu
      @dc9apu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had problems with to much compression flaring the pen tubes. It sounds like what you are experiencing. It came from to much pressure from the tail stock. To check this If you are using Alumilite and you have a major chip out on one of the ends and can't repair it. Soak in acetone for 24 hrs to save the tube the Alumilite will dissolve. look how the tube has deformed on the ends this may be your problem. I show this in the video. Hope this helped you. Ron

    Do you ever have a problem with your hdpe molds leaking at the joints? Is there something to seal the pieces with or do you just use screws? Thanks.

    • @dc9apu
      @dc9apu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can happen if your molds are not true. After you put the sides on true the ends on the table saw to take out any misalignment. If that does not work loosen the screws and use a little silicone in the gaps then tighten the screws until dry. You should stop the leaks. Lots of luck. Ron

    I wanted to use this in some casted silicone armor molds but wasn't sure how hard it really was. if it's about 2-3 inches thick do you think an airsoft pellets would dent or chip it? is this stuff brittle? I know it comes in 3 types, this is by far the best. also can I sand this stuff? please let me know.

    • @dc9apu
      @dc9apu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am no expert. Alumilite is not brittle, it is machinable, easy to sand. Before I wasted the material I would experiment with it 1/4 to 3/8" thick material first. 99% of my casting is done using a pressure pot to shrink air bubbles. If your parts will not fit in a pressure pot I would use an epoxy material like West System. Casting alumilite in open air might be a problem for you, it attracts moisture like gorilla glue it is a urethane. The leftovers from a pour in a mixing cup will turn milky on humid days. That will affect your finished product. I use mostly clear slow set. Alumilite has an excellent tech department they can answer your questions far better than me, give them a call. Lots of luck I hope the was helpful. Ron

    Buy silicone and make a mold that holds a big blank or many blanks so you can make diff at the same time. Same using tac-it/plastelina/playdooh to plug it before pushing it thrue. And instead of using mandrel directly onto the tube buy some plastic bushings ones to hold the tube

    That melamine looks like formica, early (1912) old pressure and heat formed fiber and melamine resin laminate made as a substitute for mica in insulating electrical parts, modern counter material that is not inherently a "release" material like polyethylene, teflon, etc. Spray waxy releases make most any smooth, non-porous surface usable, but not for mixing where the release may get introduced, the same for wax cups.

    Pretty good tips. You're knocking barrel trimmers, but yet you're showing the use of a reamer to clean out the end of the tube - two different tools. Barrel trimmers bring your blank down flush with the tube - you can't do that with a reamer. Always used a barrel trimmer and never had an issue, unless I tried to push down on it too fast.

    • @dc9apu
      @dc9apu  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sig: I don't use barrel trimmers I use a disc sander and homemade jig. The reamer or a drill bit is used to get the plumbers putty out of the tube. I use putty to keep the glue out of the tube when inserting the tube into the blank. The tapered reamer is not used on the tube. Thanks for watching. Ron

    • @sigguy1361
      @sigguy1361 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see why you were using the reamer, I misunderstood what you were saying, implying that the reamer was doing the job of the barrel trimmer. I've tried both methods, the sanding and the trimmer, on mine. cheers

    I have to say, I learn 99% of my stabilizing and turning from these videos. I don't just watch one and go with that person, I watch as many as are out there. What I have found is, most people have good talents but just cannot create a video that teaches their knowledge. One of the best teachers I have found is RJB WoodTurner. He is very well spoken and delivers the message in great detail. I like your videos because you seem to experiment in every direction possible and arrive at the best conclusions. I may disagree with a couple of your preferences, but you taught me something today on the molds for casting. You will save me time and money, which is very appreciative. Also, you dedicate your time and knowledge of video creation and posting to TH-cam for all of us to benefit. That is something I may never do because, even though I do a fair job on the lathe, I am a terrible teacher. You however, do a very fine job in your own cranky way. That's a good thing by the way, not everyone can pull that off. Anyhow, thanks for your time and effort to share your knowledge.

    • @dc9apu
      @dc9apu  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stephen:
      Thank you for your compliments on my video. I do not produce these videos as a teacher. I want them to be for information purposes only. I am not a teacher, I am just putting out what I have learned in the year I have been doing this. I want people to think for themselves. Hopefully, the videos will just get them thinking. The reason they jump around is I get bored doing anything more than once. Once I do something, I move on. I like stabilizing. I know of no other way in woodworking that you can bring out the woods' different characters. I would love to be able to stabilize a complete log.
      I am glad you learned how to save money on your molds. The last time I turned anything on a wood lathe was 1965, so I am definitely learning, that is why I show no turning on my videos. As for my cranky ways, that is the way I am. If you read my profile, you will see what I am. If people don't like it, they can turn me off and get in their safe room to protect their hurt feelings.
      Again, thanks for the compliment. Always try something different.
      Ron
