🔴 Pikes Peak: Racing with NO RULES 👉 • Pikes Peak: Racing wit...
    🔴 Pikes Peak's Top 10 CRAZIEST Cars 👉 • Pikes Peak's Top 10 CR...
Hillclimbing is INSANE, Look at this - [turbo noises] - it’s a homemade, 1000 horsepower, turbocharged, lightweight rocket ship. And it’s what Hill Climb Racing is all about.
Engineers building incredible machines, in their sheds - without corporate backing and SENDING IT up a hill - all to see who’s fastest.
And what’s better - is that there are almost NO RULES. So engineers can get as crazy as they like - so we’re going to go over our ten favourite hill climb cars - and tell you why they are awesome.
Hill climbing happens all over the world on stages like Prescott Hill in England which is less than a mile, to places like Pikes Peak, which is over 12 and finishes in the clouds at over 14,000 feet above sea level.
The tight corners, acceleration zones and incline means that the power-to-weight ratio and downforce are key. Expect cars with multiple turbos and MASSIVE wings to give them the boost and agility to set a good time.
This means that Hill Climbing creates some of the craziest-looking and most powerful cars in the world.

What happens when you let engineers have completely free reign? No regulations, no power limits and whatever mad aero design they can come up with.
    Well, you get crazy-powerful, high-downforce - monsters.
This is exactly what they do in the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak, where we get to see how they stack up against each other, as well as how it can go wrong.
Home-designed and made machines can compete against big-money international car companies to race to the top of the 14,000-foot mountain. A course with no run-off, no barriers, standard road-tarmac and 2000 foot drops.

I love that the organizers for Pikes Peak have embraced the no rules type of attitude which has encouraged a huge variety of builds and strategies to get up the mountain. The cars have just gotten wilder and wilder over the years and they've embraced that instead of stomping out the creativeness. It's brilliant.

Shame you didn't include the all too often overlooked, lower classes of hillclimbing. There are roadgoing production car classes, meaning you can go racing on a very small budget too. Minimal safety mods and racewear and you can compete in a car you drove to the hill. I know you briefly included Prescott and Shelsley Walsh but British and European hillclimb championships, have some incredible cars too that do have to comply with regulations but still put on a great spectacle.

I've driven an RS200 on the test track at Ford's Development site at Dunton. A friend had been working on it, and thought I might be interested as I owned a Laverda Jota, which was the fastest road bike available at that time. This was a full rally spec car with 450HP. Initially, I was not terribly impressed, but when the big turbo kicked in, the car accelerated with a violence so intense, I was left wondering how anyone could possibly concentrate and think fast enough to control it through a Welsh rally stage with trees either side of the track waiting to kill you. Another friend moved from my section to Boreham where the RS200 was built. He told me interesting facts like the Kevla body panels had to be replaced event as they were abraded away by gravel spat at the panels by spinning tires.

Personally i think the way to go for pikes peak is electric. It has zero power lose due to the thinner air. You get the same power at the top as you do at the base. Since no rules you can have traction control to reduce wheel spin and you also have instant power that can be added or removed from the wheels that slip individually. I think the setup would be fully carbon fiber, lightweight carbon tub, moving ground effect skirts and active suspension, full traction control, and maybe a medium size wing. Powertrain would be 4 individual motors driving all 4 wheels.

Something like a modern Formla E car, with front axle drive enabled, rear brakes added and the 51 kWh battery reduced to 10 or 5 kWh, but more power. Something like the Koenigsegg Regera 700 hp battery upscaled or boosted. Replace crappy wheels with wide quali slicks, replace fake aero with real aero. BOOM, 600 kg, 900 hp, AWD car. One wrong thing with the RS200 that you said. It doesn’t have a 2.4L Cosworth engine. It has a 2.4L BDT-E engine. And the BDT was the 1.8L for the’ original’ RS200’s. While the BDT-E is for the Evolution, that’s what the E stands for

@driver61 That Ford pikes peak car is no two-stroke, not sure where that came from. It is a V8, and probably does run Methanol, but it's not a 2-stroke.

I wonder if you have heard of Dean Tighe in Brisbane, Australia. He races a 1984 D'Allara F1 car. He rebuilt the Hart engine taking it from 3 to 4 litres for more torque. His business is Ivan Tighe Engineering, a world leading camshaft manufacturer. He wins everything in this part of the world.

So the massive downforce, and the power to weight minmaxing seem to be the last step. Once youve done everything you can with your chassis, you make up the difference by compromising the car overall. Downforce causes drag, but the car had spare power and the tradeoff is worth it. In theory the car with the least ridiculous weight reduction and wings, was the best engineered platform. There isnt any regulation though, so you get to make something just because you like it, and they let you put however much wing it takes to compete, which i guess is better. Of course you can bring your tercel, we recommend 1000hp and 1000lbs of downforce, we dont care how you get it. Wholesome.
