      1) they are mandated to keep the spectators out of the dangerous spots (not saying they always succeed) and can actually get quite slap from the association if they don't
      2) a rally car has a steel cage, which makes the crew compartment surprisingly tough...there are very few crew deaths or serious injuries in WRC despite all the crashing at high speed into solid things, most times they just get out of the car and walk away

    07:35 those helmets don't look like Stormtrooper helmets, it's actually the other way round. George Lucas, a huge motorsports fan, gave the concept artist photos from Autosport as a guide to what he envisaged for the Stormtroopers and Vader (although at that point Vader was only to wear the helmet when piloting his fighter not all the time)

    • @WhiskyCanuck
      @WhiskyCanuck 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Vader's helmet & mask was largely inspired by samurai helmets, though the original design was just a breathing apparatus, no helmet. I also read somewhere that stormtroopers were also partly inspired by Nazi stormtroopers with their gas masks. I guess the point is that designs come from a mish-mash of inspirations.

    • @ryanp5790
      @ryanp5790 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Whisky Canuck I do some concept arts and that’s pretty much the best way to go. If you look at the video of Porsche and Lucafilm creating a Star Wars Star ship they mix and match different elements of different ships they came up with to finalize their creation. So for a lot of movies or video games that are heavily dependent on creativity, you’ll often find during the brainstorming phase that artists will gather multiple ideas or concepts and mix and match, then finalize their new creation which then becomes something we come to know, like Darth Vader

      When I started my riding lessons, they said they would supply me with gloves and helmet (mandated for exams over here, traffic code only mandates helmet).
      One look at the helmet they had, and immediately bought a 300€ helmet (it was originally 400€, got it on discount). I then bought a jacket with CE2 protection and armoured boots. I also got armoured alpinestars gloves second hand - but still very capable. All this before I had even set my butt on a bike. I had 5000€ budget to buy my bike; ended up deciding that I was going to only buy a 4000€ bike, pay expenses and spend about 600€ in gear. Best decision ever.
      Since then, the jacket saved an elbow after I was yeeted, in class, against a parked lorry at 20km/h while going up a 2cm step (still don't know what happened), the boots saved an ankle after I dropped a 280Kg bike on a Stop sign (same day as the previous accident, lol) and got my foot jammed underneath, and the gloves in both situations didn't even make me think twice about the safety of my hands, just some bruises instead of ripped skin.
      Now that I have my license, I hope I never have to see what my helmet will save.

      It's simple, unless you want to install the two supports in the middle, which I guess you don't want, you would of course have to install them on the sides. Now guess where drivers look 99% of the time: at the sides. So your idea would be blocking their view much much more. Also, since most debris comes from the front and the halo also being designed to push obstacles to the side, having two supports on the sides instead of on in the middle would be counterintuitive, as it's more likely not to stop anything or actually push the debris inwards.

      Even the edge of the visor, and how it shuts tight, is a part of the aero.

    Very interesting and nicely crafted documentary. I painted racing drivers helmets back in the early 1980's when the designs were much simpler, but were probably more recognisable and the driver usually kept his (or her) design for his (or her) entire career. I painted several F1 helmets including Alan Jones when he was F1 champion in 1980, and did all of the helmets for the Rothmans Rally Team for a couple of years. (Ari Vattanen, Walter Rohrl, Jimmy McRae, Henri Toivonen etc). I painted 38 helmets for them in one year, because if they had an "off", they had to ditch the helmets. I also painted helmets for Desire Wilson, Gina Campbell (Power Boats), Chilean Eliseo Salazar (He knocked Piquet off when he was leading in Hockenheim in 1982), Mansour Ojjeh when TAG sponsored Williams, and had a great tour of their facility and wind tunnel, hosted by the perma-tanned Charlie Crichton-Stuart. I once had to physically hack-saw off a bit of helmet window on a couple of Simpson helmets as the supplier only had a couple of the narrow window helmets and the rally drivers needed large windows. I asked for a letter exonerating me from any liability if the helmets disintegrated on impact! The helmets also came with a "D" ring on the left side as the drivers were hooked onto the car on anti clockwise circuits (Interlagos, Brasil) and their neck muscles would fail because of they were not strong on the left side. I was regularly requested to angle grind off the D ring as it wasn't often used and rattled annoyingly if not gaffer taped on. I actually retired from painting the helmets when I was 24 as I started a great job designing exhibition stands, and helmet painting was just a hobby that went a bit out of control. I lasted 33 years in the same exhibition job and travelled the world working in 44 countries, so no regrets! I'm still a petrol head to this day, and still work in exhibitions, if they ever re-start.....

    It is so easy to forget that it was not all that long ago when there were no corner workers with fire extinguishers, no radio systems, no warning flags. You would know that your driver had crashed when he did not reach the pits in the expected time and you would see smoke from uptrack. I remember seeing Ralph Schumacher's USA crash in 2005 thinking "Where the .... are the doctors and safety workers?" and then reflecting on how much had changed.

It was in autumn 2001 when I had the pleasure of visiting the Turun Sanomat (local news paper) car museum in Turku, Finland, invited by Leo. When we came to the Surtees, Leo was visibly upset and barely could look at it. He just said quietly that the car wiped out his dreams of Formula One. We have to remember that Leo was World Champion in sportscars in 1970 sharing a Gulf Porsche 917K together with Pedro Rodriguez.
      BTW, Leo's white open-faced helmet with the Finnair sticker was stolen at some point when it was on display. I have tried to trace it and find it but with no luck. Part of Finnish motor racing history was lost on that occasion.

    People should remember that if you drop a modern helmet from even waist height onto a hard surface that you have comprised its crash absorption ability.

    Great video, shame that despite the great detail in modern helmet artwork they're often not as recognisable as the older, simple and iconic designs of the past. With the halo they're even less visible. I wonder if drivers will be allowed to customise the halo colours of their cars in the future to aid identification

    One tiny detail that is often omitted is that the doctor who invented the helmet actually got the idea after Lawrence of Arabia got killed on his motorcycle when he returned to England. That doctor was Lawrence's doctor too.

    The reason why lauda lost his hemet was because it was fitted with thick foam material to increase comfort. This foam compressed probably due to heat, caused the helmet to fell off.

    In the 80's, when I was racing, I wore the same Bell XFM-1 many F1 and Indy Car drivers wore. That was about the best you could buy then. Today, top level helmets cost 10 times what I paid for mine. Of course, those are 20 times safer.
