I can't be the only one who feels that Mercer had as good a voice as any American pop singers of that era and better than many of them? Such a multi-talented man; incredible songwriter.
Talent like this will never be heard or seen ever again! Young people of today should be made aware of this and see what they are missing and given the chance to enjoy moments from a time that we will never ever see again Ever PERIOD!!!!!
Wow, what a chance we have all been blessed with by hearing this demo. Henry Mancini playing and Johnny Mercer singing, their classic tune. To hear Johnny singing, we get an opportunity to hear how he believed it should be sung. Thanks so much for sharing.
Henry Mancini graduated from Aliquippa ,Pa HS and conducted our band in 1961 0r 1962. Much later I met his pretty daughter, Monica,at Grady Gammage auditorium in Tempe ,A. She signed my Henry Mancini album and signed it this way,My dad told me," there was a drummer who could not keep the beat, today I met him."
Very nice voice and very appropriate for the song, which has been one of my favorites for over 60 years now. And Henry Mancini does an excellent job too.
This is the very first time to hear this version of Moon River sung by the late singer/song writer Johnny Mercer & late orchestra leader Henry Mancini. The song was very popular in 1961. I always love the song Moon River by Henry Mancini. It was the opening theme song for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s which came out late 1961/early 1962 time frame. Every time I used to listen to Henry Mancini’s version I always think about the Susquehanna River in Northeastern Pennsylvania from Towanda,PA to Nanticoke,PA.
Thanx very much for posting this rare gem. I've always admired these two creators for the beautiful melodies and inspired lyrics they shared with us. The world is a better place for the time that they spent here.
I have no idea where or rather when I listened to this song the first time because I have not watched the film (yet) and it is so familiar to me but again, I really don't know where I encountered this song but it is so beautiful that it tears on my heartstrings….
24 and absolutely in love with this mans music, so blessed to have visited his resting place in Savannah Georgia, I highly recommend you all go and pay your respects to this legend!
I just can't believe the execs wanted to cut this song from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany, thank god Audrey Hepburn said " on my dead body!', The song IS the opening of the movie, bless your souls producers.
And to think when they recorded this demo they had no idea how much good this song would do for their careers... in their minds they were just writing a song and trying to get it placed... they probably didn’t think much else of the song when they wrote it..I can tell you that Jerry Butler definitely recorded this song first before the movie..
I can't believe I've never heard this song before, nor have i watched Breakfast At Tiffany's. I always thought it was just a chick flick, because i only see women raving about it. It's a great song. I really love it. Thanks for sharing. I like this demo better than the movie version.
I am 71 years old now but when I was 11 years old i received a phonograph recorder for Christmas and the very first album I purchased was Andy Williams singing Moon River. I love this song.
Midnight in the garden of good and evil brought me here :) It is said that they changed the name of a river in Savannah, Georgia, when this song became famous (also, Johnny Mercer was from Savannah).
Eu simplesmente amei essa música, não entendo completamente a tradução (desde que está em inglês), mas estou emocionada, consegui sentir as emoções que ele colocou nessa música, incrível...
wow great composer And singer. The directors of the movie ur composing songs may be so proud like Blake Edwards my fav director (director of breakfast at tiffanys and pink panter) (julie andrews husband)
Wonderful...and to think, just like Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, idiot execs wanted to cut Moon River out of the movie!!!! Mercer and Mancini went on to win the Best Song Oscar again the next year for The Days of Wine and Roses, and the should have won the next year for Charade.
I found it on youtube. I was looking for a version to play on my radio show and I had heard the story about how it was almost nixed, so I looked for a version with Henry Mancini.
It's a pity this is only a demo. Mercer's voice & Mancini's clean piano sounds heavenly.
if I has a time Machine I'd go back and meet Johnny Mercer
It's really breathtaking. Two geniuses can come together to create this anthem to the existential sadness of life, and love, and memories.
I can't be the only one who feels that Mercer had as good a voice as any American pop singers of that era and better than many of them? Such a multi-talented man; incredible songwriter.
Unbelievable that we never hear him!
You're ignorance is showing - he was a very successful pop singer in his day
@@cathydew He was reasonably successful as a singer in the '30s and '40s, but he never did make it as big as he should have.
This is talent saturation, or my name isn't Juliaflo.
Yes - I was immediately surprised how good his voice is!
Finally I found the original and probably best version. Thanks for sharing!
yo ever heard of Jacob Collier?
Johnny Mercer wrote it, this is the first
@@owem6511 you ever heard of frank ocean?
Stop it now!...SINATRA!!
No, Andy Williams made the iconic version of this song, included in the movie Breakfast At Tiffany's.

This was our first dance at our wedding. Perfect.
Very nice voice and very appropriate for the song, which has been one of my favorites for over 60 years now. And Henry Mancini does an excellent job too.
Nicest version. Raw, but clean. Rough and bluesy, but flawless. Thanks for sharing this.

Two amazingly talented people.
The Winner of Grammy Award for Song of the Year 1962.
1961
The scratching on the acetate one time listen demo puts this one over, well, Moon River. Stunning in its quiet, moody beauty.
This is my favorite version of a beautiful song.
I've always found this song really sad. I could really feel the emotion coming through in this version... thank you for posting it!
the melancholy in his voice, mesmerising
Wonderful. Could have been released as a single on its own.
One of the greatest songs! Ever~
I have no idea where or rather when I listened to this song the first time because I have not watched the film (yet) and it is so familiar to me but again, I really don't know where I encountered this song but it is so beautiful that it tears on my heartstrings….

I wonder if there are any young folks who will get the beauty of this treasure? I couldn't love another the way I love this.
Im a young folk. I'm in love with song. It won a Oscar for best original song and a Grammy for song of the year! Glad you like it too.
This song pops up sometimes and I dream away then. Such a lovely song. Louis Armstrong did a great version as well.
I think this song will always be magical for many years into the future, got chills hearing it

You are very, very welcome. Discoveries like this are what keep me happy - and thrilled - about the internet.
