    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    It's amazing how one could keep looking at your rocks for a long time and still want to see the next one. They are really beautiful. And to think that they are random stones, washing up from the huge and wild great lakes!

    Looking at some Lapidary equipment. And start up seems costly. Is it recommended not to buy cheap saw as I dont want to replace a year from now. Would like to start a small on the side business.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rock tumblers are terribly expensive. If you watch Craig's List and eBay, you should be able to find a reasonably priced saw. The other option that a lot of people use it to buy a tile saw. Those can be found used also because it's common for people to buy one for a bathroom remodel and then sell it. I don't think it's easy to make money doing lapidary work unless you're really skilled at making jewelry. That requires an additional investment of other tools.

    pretty cool videos my kids absolutely love rock hunting I’d like to do it more with them but we live further inland. However this Fourth of July weekend I thought about going up to Rockport park it’s about a three and a half hour drive from where we live, to walk and look for some cool rocks to tumble with them not too sure on any other places to go they just like finding rocks and putting them in their tumblers.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rockport is better for fossils. If you walk to the north you might find some other rocks, but you'll have to walk a long way. If you do go to Rockport, be sure to go to the quarry and look around. There are also sinkholes behind the quarry, but it's at least a mile walk.
      If you live in southern Michigan, you might want to stop at Harrisville State Park and also at the Sturgeon Point Lighthouse on your way up.

    • @PrimalVarietyYTC
      @PrimalVarietyYTC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michigan Rocks thanks for the advice. I’ll most definitely stop at Harrisville as well as Sturgeon point on the way up.

    Judging by the size of your fingers, it looks like most of your finished rocks shown here are about an 1 inch long. Would you say that they were about 2 times larger before you tumbled them? The rock at 4:45 pops - love it! I've seen some people call the 'swirly' pattern of jasper and hematite (like the one in the middle of the screen at 0:20) as "Mary Ellen Jasper". Would Mary Ellen Jasper be the correct name for any of the rocks you have shown here?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every rock tumbles for a different amount of time based on that individual rock. Most would not tumble so much that they'd lose half of their size.
      I think Mary Ellen Jasper is mainly found in Minnesota. I have found things in Michigan that someone from Minnesota identified as Mary Ellen Jasper though, so I think it's possible to find it here. I'm not sure if that one you pointed out would qualify or not.

      Jasper is pretty common, so if you're asking if it's valuable, it's not particularly valuable. I picked these up myself and there are plenty more where they came from.
      Jasper is considered a semi-precious stone. It can be made into jewelry. Here's an article where you can read more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemstone
