Thank you for explaining why they look different due to being grown out of water. I was losing my mind trying to see if there were more types of water wisteria.
I am so glad you talked about how it looks different above ground vs underwater. I bought some but was confused why it looked so different from the pictures! A ton of sites say not to put it in a tank smaller than 5 gal, but with the frequent water changes, we don’t mind trimming it up a bit. Thank you for the tips and the info!
This is literally the only plant I have been able to grow. I love it!!! It took over my 10 gallon and I couldn't be happier. I trim it every couple weeks and am putting the trimmings in my 55 gallon. But it's not doing as well in there for some reason. Now that I know it's Cichlid safe I'm going to try it in my 125!!!! Maybe I can take out some (or even ALL!!!!) of those silk and plastic ones! THANKS for the info!!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!
I have water wisteria at home it's really handy when breeding Guppy's as the babies can hide so the adults don't eat them. But it has taken over the tank!
Favorite plant so far because of its hardiness. Bought a couple other plants and have had alot of problems getting them to grow well. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. But the wisteria is very resilient and i enjoy watching it grow.
I got an established submerged wisteria cut it up put it in my 55 and every piece started growing the immersed solid leafs. Pretty interesting. I like it. Its taking over my back wall.
Love this plant. Mine looked like it was dying, then it converted and now it grows like a week. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing the info. - Little Bobby
Ok that was adorable with your little one saying hi. I have a little one that age too. I love this plant. I put a tiny stem in my aquarium 2 months ago and I have enough for my other aquarium now. It's beautiful in there and it doesn't have brown on it or anything on it that I find unattractive. My guppy fry like to hide in it too.
I have some of this, at one point decided to get rid of it, tossed most of it and dumped the water into a potted plant on my porch. About a month later, there was a shoot still growing in the pot, and I decided to rinse it off and put it back in the aquarium. Still growing lol
I've finally started prepping my betta's old tank for plants this week, and I bought a wisteria yesterday before I even realized you made this video. I've had an anubias nana and a... dwarf pond lily...? (idk, I grew it from a bulb pack from Petsmart) growing in jars in my window, and I'm excited to get started on my first planted tank. I need to get tools though, since I've just been using a pair of long spoons to move the plants around in their jars...
Update: I moved the water wisteria, anubias nana, and lily into a secondhand 3 gallon tank with a filter shortly after I posted this. They all grew in well, though the nana's original leaves got a little discolored. New leaves grew in though, and they look healthy. I had let the plants grow in for 2 months, and just 2 weeks ago got a pair of male guppies and a small horned nerite snail. I love watching the snail go around grazing, and I was thinking of naming the guppies Player 1 and Player 2. Anyone want to guess what they look like?
Update 2: Red jumped out of the tank while I wasn't home, came in and found him under my dresser. I was really sad, because I had him for a month, he was gorgeous, I loved watching them swim around, and he got along perfectly with Blue. I got another one to replace him so Blue wouldn't be alone, but Noob died a day after I got him. I either got a sick/injured/stressed male that was bullied overnight to the point of dying. He was fine when I went to sleep, had a bite in his tail when I woke up but was otherwise fine, then he started dying right in front of me an hour later. I'm waiting a week and trying to come up with ways to introduce a new fish since 1) if Noob was sick, I want to make sure Blue is safe, 2) I don't want to repeat with Noob or have Blue get killed, 3) the tank is too small to add a bunch of new fish to counter Blue's bullying. So either I get one other fish, or Blue lives alone. I have another hand-me-down tank, but I need to sterilize and set it up, and it's a 2 gallon. Maybe I can move Blue there to break his territorial behavior?
In case you still haven't figured out anything, guppies need to be in groups. The more the better, as this makes them feel safe and it speads the aggression out. They need 15-20 gallon plus so there is lots of space and you need to give hiding places. Most guppies are overbred and are now pretty weak. Find a reputable breeder. They will jump, like other fish when looking for better conditions just like a betta will. Make sure you test your water regularly to keep it ok for their requirements. Good luck
OH MY GOD WATER WISTERIA!! I have had this plant in my tank for years and I completely forgot what it was called, and for the LIFE of me I have never been able to find it again in stores nor would it ever come up whenever I'd search for it. THANK YOU for making a video on this, I'm finally able to identify my favourite aquatic plant!! :D And another thing to note with them - they seem to actually grow best with regular trimmings! If you snip a piece of their stem off, they'll wanna shoot off new stems to make up for it, and usually will shoot of 2-3+ at once! This also applies to if any of your tank critters decides to take a bite of them lol, one of my mystery snails decided that my water wisteria would be a nice snack and let me tell you, I have never seen that plant grow faster than it did when my snail was trying to eat it! So they're definitely great plants to keep if you have a problem with your critters eating your plants - juuust make sure it's a full-grown plant that you're putting in there so it can actually grow new offshoots quickly XD I do wish this plant was a lot more common than it is. I can never find it in any pet/fish stores anymore, and that's a shame because they're such good plants! They're so hardy and grow so much easier than every other aquatic plant I've gotten, even moreso than anacharis and that's saying something!
I once bought some plants from a store and a leaf of emersed grown w.w hitchhiked along with them.i just let the leaf float in my tank and it sprouted some roots in couple of days and I stuck the lead in the sand and et voila i now have a free w.w plant with me..growing crazzyy
I really like these plants, too. I have some in all 3 of my tanks. I've had them for about a couple of months now & they don't seem to be growing very fast. I've only had to trim 1 of them just once. I'm glad that they can be floating plants, b/c it seems the pleco, keep uprooting them. Strange, mine seems to be doing the opposite, in 2 of my tanks, the new leaves looks like a broad leaf.
Just got some from the local petsmart, was so cheap I couldn’t afford to not give it a shot. Most of the existing leaves are melting away, going to be trimming those off tonight. But they’re going crazy with rooting out of every leaf node and tons of new leaves growing everywhere. I know they have a reputation for growing quickly, but damn, they’re quick!
Justin, thank you. I have planted in nano tank. High lighting from tank and sun supporting solid growth and through propagating has thickened up tank nicely - love it. Though I still struggle to anchor clippings in substrate, I agree great for beginners like me. Do you have any guidance on how densely one should plant this? Are there consequences from density? Mike
I put water wisteria in a rimless 10 gallon with a betta that I have had trouble growing other things in other than java moss and it is going crazy! I love it! I'm going to transfer some to my goldfish tank and a 20 gallon long that has a mated pair of honey gouramis hoping they will breed.
I have a bit of trouble to grow water wisteria in my shrimp tank, I think because of the less bioload with shrimps, I don't feed a lot :( great guide though :)
How do you plant these into gravel substrate? Seems like the ends just shrivel up and die with me. They never grow roots. I've used green pro root tabs (had to take that out be it go into the water) Now I use seachem's root tabs and it seems so much weaker in comparison.
Just picked up my first water wisteria for my aquarium because I couldn’t find water sprite. Thank you so much for this video! I am using this because it was suggested that it could provide cover for my dwarf gourami who is being bullied by my other dwarf gourami. If this doesn’t work I will end up separating them. At first I thought I had the wrong plant because it looked so different when I got it home..thanks for clarifying. This video was super helpful! I was wondering if this will provide the same kind of cover as water sprite? It was the closet I could find and I understand they are very similar.
Water Wisteria is not a root feeder. It is a water column feeding plant. The heavy "root" system is for anchoring itself, similar to rhizome plants. They can take some nutrients through their roots, but they aren't efficient at it. Liquid fertilizer are better if you need to fertilize. That's why they can be floated. Also, anchoring them to objects works very well, like Anubias and Ferns. Even a small stone or weight just on top of the substrate, roots will anchor to substrate eventually. Especially for people experiencing rotting stems when attempting to propagate stems directly into the substrate, which seems to be a common problem in this comment section. This will eliminate that issue.
I let mine float on the top of the water for 2 weeks and it began making loads of roots. Now I stuck it into the substrate and it's not rotting anymore
I bought a water wisteria from a pet store , unfortunately, the only thing visible was the top. When I got home 2 hours away. The root was rotted. Can I still plant the viable stem even though the roots were dead.?
I had purchased some of these plants as stem cuttings. Tried to plant them but the stems just rotted off. What did I do wrong? Should I have floated them until they grew roots?
70-82. Don't go over 82 for anything, it can shorten lifespans of creatures by speeding up their metabolism and is too hot for many aquatic plants, snails, and shrimp.
I've had this for a few weeks now but the top is lovely and green yet the bottom it's all wilted away, is that just cause it's getting used to the aquarium? Should I snip off the nice green part at the top and plant it and just get rid of the stem with no leaves left? It's made a big mess in my Aquarium and my inlet filter is just full of the dead leaves!
Strange how so many claim it to be so easy to grow. Over the years I have found it to be one of the most difficult plants to grow. It grows so slow that it seems to turn brown and die before putting on any size.
Depends on your lighting, bio load, and Co2 or no Co2. Seems like it loves high lighting and Co2 but Co2 isn’t necessary especially if you have good lighting
The new submerged leaves on it are smaller and thinner, like most aquatic plants. Just leave it to convert and remove any leaves that are completely dead everyday that you check it. It grows really fast as a floating plant. I haven't tried it in substrate yet. But if you do plant it, wait for it to have roots first and provide nutrients for the roots.
Yes I seen many sources say you can float this plant for sure. Dustinsfishtanks talks about it off the top of my head but I've heard it from other sources as well
Hi I live in Taiwan. I am American and just bought one these plants. The water in my tank is 30 degrees C. Does it cause the edges of the plant to turn black. I am American. In Taiwan mostly have gravel and I use liquid fertilizer. I have a TH-cam channel you can check it out.

Forgive me for my rant, but I am so tired of ppl saying how much this plant will take over. Or, that it will grow like a weed. Sadly, that has not been my experience and I am frustrated beyond belief. What a solitary hobby this is.
Thank you for explaining why they look different due to being grown out of water. I was losing my mind trying to see if there were more types of water wisteria.
Just in time! I bought some Wisteria today and couldn’t find many videos about it. Thanks

Stick to plants classed as weeds and you will be fine
I have water wisteria at home it's really handy when breeding Guppy's as the babies can hide so the adults don't eat them. But it has taken over the tank!
Tatanya Jardine that’s what I was hoping someone would say 😊
Can it grow in very low light...example morning sun light coming from 2 feet distant window
Favorite plant so far because of its hardiness. Bought a couple other plants and have had alot of problems getting them to grow well. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. But the wisteria is very resilient and i enjoy watching it grow.

Wow I didn’t know it grew differently underwater but looking at it now I see a transition in shape of leaves from when I bought it
This video was really helpful, I had accidentally misidentified my wisteria as water sprite so this video cleared up the difference well for me.
I have some of this, at one point decided to get rid of it, tossed most of it and dumped the water into a potted plant on my porch. About a month later, there was a shoot still growing in the pot, and I decided to rinse it off and put it back in the aquarium. Still growing lol

Gonna be making a carpet out of this in my 125.
I've had it before - it grows CRAZY fast.
Thanks so much. Definitely getting Water Wisteria for my guppy tank.

Thanks for explaining, I was so confused as to why mine had normal looking leaves
Great in shrimp tanks, it is super easy and grows really fast.
I have it in all my tanks.
Thanks for the video. all my questions on wisteria were answered from it 👍
what kind of sands or stones I have to get for plants ? Thanks
Thanks for highlighting the wisteria, pretty much covered everything I needed to know about it!
Mines going crazy...ph 7.8..light hardness....25 great video I'm knew..I will follow ty
How many days it will take to transform to submerged form from immersed form ?

I been waiting for this plant!!!

How do you plant these into gravel substrate? Seems like the ends just shrivel up and die with me. They never grow roots.
I've used green pro root tabs (had to take that out be it go into the water)
Now I use seachem's root tabs and it seems so much weaker in comparison.
I just bought sone from my local pet store but its emersed. Any ideas as to how long it takes to get its underwater leaves?
I've had mine for over a month it just grows straight up out of the water
Just picked up my first water wisteria for my aquarium because I couldn’t find water sprite. Thank you so much for this video! For this video I was looking for a plant that can grow big and tall fast
👍🏽😊😊
I cant get this to stick into my substrate.
Me niether, and no one ever seems to talk about it. The stems just seem to melt and hten it floats for the rest of forever.
I let mine float on the top of the water for 2 weeks and it began making loads of roots. Now I stuck it into the substrate and it's not rotting anymore
Stem rot is usually due to a lack of nutrients. You should use a root tab or nutrient-rich substrate.
I let my wisteria lie on the bottom without burrying it while having a weight to hold it in place, then it took root on the substrate.
Will it grow as a Floater like Guppy Grass??
I like it👍🏾grows well😃
I bought a water wisteria from a pet store , unfortunately, the only thing visible was the top. When I got home 2 hours away. The root was rotted. Can I still plant the viable stem even though the roots were dead.?
Yes
Switch it on. Make sure you don't push the lever all the way. You should hear 3 clicks. The plant will be ready to go.
Is fox tail plant good for shrimps?
Strangely mines doing the opposite the broader leaves are now developing a month or so after going into my aquarium.
Can you attach it to rock?
does it need substrate?
Very informative. Please suggest some root tabs.
Do they flower when they grow up to the top of the tank?
They flower in the wild
I had purchased some of these plants as stem cuttings. Tried to plant them but the stems just rotted off. What did I do wrong? Should I have floated them until they grew roots?
We have the same problem, we have very hard water and PH of 7.8-8.3, maybe that has something to do with it.
How will it do with discus fish temps like 82-85?
If it's fine for Bettas like he said then it should be fine in those temps
70-82. Don't go over 82 for anything, it can shorten lifespans of creatures by speeding up their metabolism and is too hot for many aquatic plants, snails, and shrimp.
@@facelesstunes8608 agreed. 80 to 82 is on the warm side for discus. Beyond speeding metabolism, the high Temps make them more susceptible to disease.
Would it still grow if I accidentally broke off the roots when planting?
Super helpful!! Thank you man
So it can be grown without water?
I've had this for a few weeks now but the top is lovely and green yet the bottom it's all wilted away, is that just cause it's getting used to the aquarium? Yes it was pretty calm for a while and then went crazy.. maybe because we had more fish or added special blend biological goodness
Depends on your lighting, bio load, and Co2 or no Co2. Seems like it loves high lighting and Co2 but Co2 isn’t necessary especially if you have good lighting
@@RandySoWavvy the second i added a home made co2 kit this plant just went crazy
cheers and thank in 2022
How much salt can Water Wisteria handle?
I guess i don't have enough light cause mine is taking forever to grow new setup and all
i float it, grows like crazy
So you don't need to plant it?
Had one that grew like 3 feet out of the tank before i rescaped my tank
this is so pog
Older leaves on mine have became white and also new shoots are small and new leaves are thine do you have any idea why?
The new submerged leaves on it are smaller and thinner, like most aquatic plants. Just leave it to convert and remove any leaves that are completely dead everyday that you check it. Blake Jones ah, okay. Thank you!
Mine doesn't wanna change the leaves shape to submerged. 2 weeks have passed😁
Oof rip
Cool man ty
Cool! Wisteria can be grown like water lettuce, right? Or is that water sprite? Lol.
Yeah you can float Wisteria
Mine does not do good in the substrate for some reason. I float it in all my tanks. My Betta's love hiding in it
Wait you can just float this plant?
I tried water sprite as a floating plant, but the fish ate it so it never stood a chance. :( Going to give wisteria a shot due to its broader leaves, and this time planted in substrate.
Aw lmao
Water Wisteria: "My pain only makes me stronger!"
Mine isn't growing.
Cool
Mine dies off
Monkey Nut mine always does too 😡
What was you ph gh and kh? And what do you use for light? Mines dies too as to why I’m asking...?
phil martin my ph is 8.0, I have tried it in a few of my tanks with all different lights, the latest is a Aqueon optibright led
I float this for my guppy frys since it looks better than guppy grass imo.
My water wisteria doesn't even look like that. Well a bit but it doesn't grow roots on the main stem instead some leaves starts to die and new ones sprout and for new plants then I just pluck it off and replant it. It's mostly look like Amazon swords with wisteria leaves.
💯👍👍
I wanna get it bit I have a 5 gallon xD Oh well, it'll be worth it
LOL baby said hey
I have bought this plant many times even just a month ago and it always dies 😡
This has been my experience with this plant too Heather. Many attempts and it always dies. And then there are people posting about how fast it grows. I'll believe that when I see it.
also sir.. even a floating leaf will turn into a plant
Guppys:)

"Batas" 😭
bettas.
Things are either unique or not . How can they be "very unique" 🙄
Can it grow like money plant? Under staircase with no aquarium light, only basic sunlight coming from window
