How to Tune Pianos. Tuning the Skeleton (Contiguous M3's). How, and why it works.

  • IMPORTANT! A3-C#4 does NOT have to beat at 8bps. Please do not confuse this. This is a poor explanation of how the skeleton works. Just tune the lower skeleton as slow-medium-fast, medium-medium-medium, or fast-medium-slow; whatever works out based on where you put F3.

    I enjoy fresh looks at tuning, and have literally had my fill of the snooty know-it-all tuner class that think they have all the answers. Thanks for this great video.

    Exceptionally clear explanation of a great method for tuning by ear. Super! just revisited your material and it is very useful indeed.

    Just a note. The numbers I used are not mathematically correct as equal ratios except fir 8-8-8. I used them to illustrate that A3C#4 is always the same speed when we use equal ratios on the Lower skeleton. .

      Thanks! I teach people about aural piano tuning online. People who want to tune their own piano, people who want to be piano technicians, and professional technicians who want to get better at aural tuning. Are you in any of those groups?

    Hi Mark!! I took a piano technology course in the 90's in New York at a spot headed then by the late Kalman Detrich. I was not and still very consistent in setting the temperament by ear. I therefore resorted to the Sanderson Accutuner and have been using it ever to speed up the process. My problem is that it s strictly visual and I am still looking to improve my tuning aurally. I would like to know if you re located in the NY area or near. If not, do you think your course can help? I really do prefer lessons in person...

    Hello Mark, I found your name during a search for piano tuning on the internet and through a Yahoo Answers that you wrote in. Question for you, since you are part of the Piano Tuner's Guild is which online courses which you recommend and which you do not recommend. I am at the exploratory stage of adding a supplementary job to my Public School Music teaching job and I am not in a hurry. I'm taking my time to fully explore this possibility and relying on expert advice such as yourself.

      I give a basic 20 course for $497. It is over Google Hangout and is live. You will learn a ton about theory and practice.

    Hi Mark! Excellent video, but still I do not understand what exactly you developed.
    I mean the contiguous major thirds method. Anyway great video.

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment.
      So, tuning ET we need to tune M3 beating faster as we go up the scale. The skeleton sets F3A3C#4F4A4 with good accuracy. Early accuracy means less errors and that means less refinement needed later on.
      Does that make sense?
      After F3A3C#4F4A4 are tuned, we use them as credible references to tune all the other notes from F3 to F4.
      Then we tune up and down from there using octaves, basically.

      Hi,
      Thanks for the reply Mark!
      I do not want to give the impression of being insolent at all but I can not see clear what is your development, because as far as I know the contiguous major thirds method using F3A3C#4F4A4 was developed by George Defebaugh. Maybe I did not understand and you meant something else but I ask because I am not the only one who understood that. Thanks!

    • @MarkCerisanoRPT
      @MarkCerisanoRPT  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alejo Ferreiro Are you asking what I have added to Defebaugh's method? If so, I don't believe I have added anything. I learned this from someone else and just added my own spin. Some use 4:5 ratios. Some (Jack Stebbins) use interim equal beating M3's. I use the end goal method; tuning progressive M3 directly, no interim equal beating, no guessing at ratios. We tune the ratio that fits the piano. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for the comment. I am teaching people to tune pianos.Please refer people to my site. howtotunepianos.com

    so does it matter if the hammer is in the 1 to 2 o'clock position of at the right angle position of 3 o'clock

    • @markcerisano4268
      @markcerisano4268 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as placing the pitches using this method, no. However, if you do not place the pitches so that they will stay there, it doesn't matter. Stability is the first skill you have to master. Proper hammer angle placement can help. Contact me privately and I can teach you.

      hey thanks, however there are two guys here in the Dallas area the have said that may be willing to show me some of the beginning basics.....one works for the local Fazioli dealer. the other I think has been tuning for 45 years.

    You talked about beat speed (beats per second) in the video. A beginner question....do you determine that by relative experience of your career or do you know that by scientific fact (ie. a machine that piano tuners have.)

    • @markcerisano4268
      @markcerisano4268 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bps are not critical to know. We compare beat speeds and try to create given progressions.

      Great video. After I get that far, how do I get the other notes in that temperament octave? And once I have that middle octave all perfect then can I just tune the rest of the piano using beatless octaves?
