Fantastic paints to get into our hobby with, especially if you're starting out with Zombicide to paint! I'm loving that yellow-ey brown addition to the set, I think that's a colour they have been missing! What paints did you guys first start with and did you find it super daunting (picking colours or a set) when you first began?
So I had dabbled a bit in 40k (Orks) as a teen and at that time owned about 4 paints from Citadel so when I got back into it I went with them. I soon moved on to Vallejo however and have enjoyed their paints a lot. From the get-go I planned what I wanted to paint, the colors I wanted and then bought specific colors, no boxed set for me.
Well hopefully next week I'll finally have my Green Horde, but I'll probably go in with an all in set xD Just not right now, still quite broke, because of Hate and Nemesis
HATE and Nemesis tore through my bank account as well! It should not be legal to release miniature games at the same time like that! :P Of course Batman is about to take what's left of my bank account lol
I'm with you both on Nemesis, it was a tough decision for me, as I could only back one of them :'(
There are far too many games coming out, a good problem to have I suppose :D
Neat to hear your thoughts. I bought a bundle that they offered to Zombicide Green Horde backers, which included these, a bottle each of 'Barbarian Flesh' and 'Glistening Blood', and spray cans of Army Green Primer and spray varnish, which are nice.
I've got a box of the original Zombicide paints as well, so I think I'm well armed for painting my figs.
OooooOooo I like this new set. I have all the zombie sets now because I learned to paint with your vids. :)
We can be Army Painter fan boys/girls together! This range finally has a yellow/brown so I can stop saying use Vallejo's Desert Yellow :-D
Thanks for doing this and giving us the skinny on this set.
Thanks for commetting Rob! I'm always weary of posting things like this a) it's pretty obvious what's in the box, so I'm unsure if people even need to see and b) I try and do a little review, then realise it was just me rambling for a couple mins about my thoughts :-D
So super appreciate hearing it's appreciated!
Agreed on a great way to start painting. The only thing I wish they'd include are agitators of some sort to help mix the paint. You might be surprised on that pinkish color, I use a warcolours set that has something similar and once dry it makes sense compared to what it looks like in the pot.
I used a yellow as a base of my walker's skin, then used a green wash. Turns the yellow green put leaves the raised areas lighter. Very quick method for the mass of walkers.
I like the sound of this Kenneth, if you get a chance to share a picture of this I'd love to see!
I've only been painting on and off for a year this is my first real project where I have started to try and use highlights, etc on models. I'm happy with how my models have come out so far. This channel really helped with the survivors, Keep up the good work. Orc Walker i.pinimg.com/originals/5b/a7/be/5ba7bebd388342dea39a580d119b1cce.jpg
HI Kenneth, did you just use a base for the skin and the brown for the cloth then a greenish wash? Is that correct? I want to paint my Green horde miniatures but don't want to spend so much time painting each one.
I got the Black Plague set for Christmas last year and I'm in the process of painting my game miniatures.
The brush looked pretty good out of the box but it didn't hold up very well. Better than Walmart brushes, not a Kolinsky Sable.
Paint Quality is nice. I used Valejo before and had problems with paint setting fast/used a lot of suspenders trying to get a few drops to stay fresh. Army painter is more stable, doesn't clot up in my tray, thins well. As always I'm a sucker for any drop-bottle paint, you just get to use sooo much more of the paint you buy.
I got a lot of colors I wouldn't buy and they're great for the genre. The leather is very yellowy and needs to be washed to take on a leather hue. I was really uninterested with the wet/dry blood effects until I tried them. The simple contrast of brown-red with a thin red over the top really looks good in wounds or on blades. I matte seal my models so it flattens out the Glistenning gore but some paint on gloss makes it pop once again.
Really helpful review!
Cool sets. Army Painter makes quality paints. The biggest issue people have with them is due to paint separation. It's quite easy, and in my opinion necessary, to add a glass or hematite bead to give proper mixing. I love their metallics. I wasn't crazy about their leather brown and found that it didn't give me great coverage. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to multiple coats, so anything more than 2 coats and I get annoyed. :)
brewgeek1 I’m the same (about multiple coats). I put metal beads in all of mine and it still didn’t help. I have not had good luck with these sets. I just buy the colors independently, or use what I already have amongst all my Citadel, Army Painter and Vallejo paints.
Great comment! I totally meant to mention about the separation issue. Although I still think the paints are great, my wrist gets sore from the 6 hours of shaking they need. Definitely my favourite brand of metallic currently. Be interesting to hear what Benson thinks. I’m with you on the leather brown too, I thought the elf green was a fairly watery paint too. I like the colours, just dislike needing 3+ coats.
Watch It Paint It ELF GREEN was the worst (for being thin and separating)! LoL 🤪
When I first started painting, I used a wet palette as well, imagine elf green and leather brown on a wet palette :-D
Watch It Paint It so you were basically painting miniature with watercolors then. LoL
I have never actually tried any Army Painter paints but I've only heard good things about them. Particularly their washes. I really want to pick up some of those (Even though I have a ton of washes already).
I actually started off with a combination of basic colored Apple Barrel craft paint ($0.50 / bottle) and a few select colors from Vallejo to keep the initial cost low until I knew for sure that I wanted to paint minis. It only took one mini though to ignite the fire! After that my collection of paints quickly EXPLODED - Primarily paints from Vallejo until I picked up the Citadel Shades set and a few select colors from P3. Loved them all so far, though I do like Vallejo's dropper bottles a bit better than the flip lids of Citadel/P3.
I'm prob one of the odd one's out being that I do recall looking at this set, but it didn't really interest me since I felt there were only a few of the paints I'd actually want to use. (Granted I didn't start with Z:BP - I started with Super Dungeon Explore) So I opted to look through hundreds of Vallejo and P3 colors and pick specific ones I wanted - tailoring my choices based on which minis I wanted to paint next. This worked well for me (due to me having a more artistic background and being a bit picky with what I want), but I think most people are the opposite - they want to be told or provided with the exact paints they need so they have one less thing to worry about as they learn the art of mini painting. That's where this set shines - particularly since you get some basic colors, some metallics, and some washes all in the same box which in most other paint sets you're lucky to get even two of those.
I think everything you said sounds about right. I'm so unartistic it was fantastic that a paint set told me what I needed to paint a specific game. Once I finished Z:BP I was totally lost, I wanted a new set for Arcadia Quest, if they did one, even if it was 90% the same colours I'd probably have bought it - just for any help I could get :-D
Now I have a lot more experience under my belt, and can see the other side of your points, I rather like picking individual colours that I want for a specific task!
I think these sets are absolutely fantastic to start with, but anyone as into the hobby as we are, will quickly start growing their paint collection after :-)
Wow - I got started in almost the same way too :) But switch Black Plague with original Zombicide, and I bought the original Zombicide paint set from Army Painter haha. Well, I guess I painted the occasional model car or plane before that - but board game miniatures are vastly more fun, I have to say.
Think thats a great example for anyone else thinking about starting, they need to check out your channel too, you started in the same place as me, and your work is fantastic!
Watch It Paint It Thank you! I love watching your channel too obviously! I see you're nearly at 3k subs - amazing work!
Yeah, getting really close now! You've continued to grow well too :-) You'll have to give me a shout when you're ready for a guest appearance :-D
Watch It Paint It Haha, I think that would be fun :)
Love your take on this coming from someone who actually started with this range of paints. how much do these costs? they seem like a great gift idea for those people thinking about painting. I've found that many want to start painting but never end up doing so but this would provide the "excuse" they need.
I think the large box is around $30 and the smaller one $18. Funny you mention that (because its a great idea) and I actually bought one of their boxes for my brother when he was unsure if he wanted to get into painting or not!
Did it work?! :D
He did actually paint a few models - maybe 50! But he's not hooked and mainly just helps paint my games occassionally.
Nice! I need to gift some of these so they end up painting my games :D
I quite like army painter paints, prefer their washes and shades over the paints, but I've got hundreds of paints and my favourites are air brush paints, vallejo air etc - So what's the difference between the plague set paint colours and army painters normal paints, they look pretty much similar if not the same ... is it just a different label and gimmick to sell more paints or are they actually different colours?
Do you use the air colours with an airbrush? I don't have one, am I missing out?
I think most of the Zombicide paints are specially made for these sets, but some of them are exactly the same as outside the set - and even the specifically made ones can be pretty close to existing colours (like 99% matches!). I see it as a less of a gimmick, more of a specific packet aimed at helping paint a specific game. Definitely found this very useful as a new painter! Think these sets are a fantastic place to start, I'd give them a lot more thought if I need them if I already had a collection.
I use air paints with the airbrush and normal brush .. it's just pre-thinned really ... and I only use the airbrush for base coating and highlighting, I'm no expert in it's use :D ... You could try some Scale 75 paints they're kinna' semi "airbrush" paints, you can use them for both styles, and their metallic ranges are pretty awesome, especially the coloured metallics :D
Thanks for the headsup Carl, I'll have a look!
Awesome videos. If I use only the green horde set, How many minis you think I can paint?
It might be a push with only the add on set! But depending how much variety you want in your zombies you could prolly manage them!
Really cool video, ive been considering buying or getting into the army painter range, question why did they send you this free, justasking as im a very small youtuber my self
“Free” is probably a strong word. I still do hours of work featuring their product every week. It’s good advertisement for them to get their new product in my Green Horde videos! Think I have some of the first on TH-cam and I’m getting over 30k views a month which Green Horde sis excitingly new for us all :-)
Watch It Paint It well keep producing those awesome videos mate
Some of it is basic marketing on your end as well. I am getting a few free games this year, both early versions before release and that's from me just putting myself out there - and I'm not nearly as big as WIPI :D Also don't be afraid of rejection if you do start pitching toward companies. It's like shopping a book around, you might be told no quite a few times but it's worth it to get that yes!
Goblin skin or sick/spew colour!
I’m loving your comments as you adventure through catching up on all the content :D you’re ploughing through it all!
@@WatchItPaintIt Well, I am very much enjoying your video's so Thanks for making them :)
Told ya you'd be able to get some if you asked ;)
You weren’t wrong! But I didn’t have to ask hehe :-)
Nice one. Word of the good work must have got out! :D
I got all the the original Zombicide and Black Plague ones and hated them. Too thick or didn’t mix well. 🤮 I’m not even gonna bother with these.
That’s so weird, if anything I find the completely opposite of too thick! Wonder if some how you had the opposite problem to most of us with shaking?
Watch It Paint It this new set might be different. I live the idea, I just wish the paints were more consistent because I love the Army Painter guides (and their primers).
Watch It Paint It on some of the paints, even with the added metal mixing bead, the paints were so this, they wouldn’t even shake. LoL. But I’ve had mixed results with other paint brands as well. I have a few Citadel paints that are too think to even work with and some Vallejo’s are so thin there’s no pigments coverage. So no brand is safe! LoL. I’m glad you got these free though and they’re working for you. You maybe have received a good batch. :)
Yeah Matt, that's my basic conclusion, find the best paints of each brand and use them! I love Army Painters colour primers and washes, all their paints that work are amazing, the green and brown I often use my Vallejo version instead, then I also love the Citadel technical range! So it's a matter of trying out paints and working out what's best. This I think is one of the best ways to start. Maybe in the future I can do a more advance video, and talk about which colours from which sets I'd pick from scratch :-O
