It's been an awfully long time since I talked about mutes on the channel! Today, we finally change that! Enjoy this comparison of Yamaha's "Silent Brass" pickup mutes for trumpet. Thanks for this comparison. I'm considering upgrading my gen 1 to the most recent generation, but I really do hate practicing with a mute. I'm looking into soundproofing a closet to use as a small room to practice in without disturbing my neighbors. That would be much better than playing with a mute.
Thanks for your comment, Eric! I agree, regardless of which mute you’re using, muted practice flat-out sucks. It’s part of the reason I don’t necessarily think the newer Silent Brass is that much of an upgrade-you basically just trade out some intrinsic issues for others and end up with a mute that’s hard to play for slightly different reasons.
I remember seeing a demonstration of the old Silent Brass system at a convention. There was a lot of background noise, and I could not hear the trumpet at all without the headphones on - so I assumed for a long time it somehow caused your playing to be completely silent!
Haha, that’s pretty funny! A noisy convention room sounds like a terrible place to demo a practice mute!
Do you know how to change the battery on gen 1? I’m assuming there’s a battery, because a nine volt was in the case. It’s been years since I’ve played, so I don’t remember about any battery. I just know the headphones don’t work
My favourite and preferred is the gen. 1, is the best!
Hi; My reasoning for purchasing the mute is simple, ( I have a gen. 2) when I am on the road in a hotel room, I do not want the 300 hundred pound lineman in the next room, breaking down my door and wiping the floor with me because I awakened him with my practicing, and to that. the mute works great thank you. regards John.

I suppose that is the primary criterion of a practice mute, yes.
@@SamuelPlaysBrass I suppose I was being a little flip with my comment, but I'm a person that has to practice a few hours daily, so anything that allows me to do so is very helpful. I agree these mutes have their problems, but most of these problems, you are able to work with. In my case, they are very helpful and I would recommend the Yamaha Silent Brass Mute to anyone who asks. Regards John.
Can you compare trumpet resistance of gen 1. mute to gen 2.?
I saw the silent brass mic on Amazon and it also has a personal studio system that allows you to play natural as though you don't have a mute in. It also allows you to connect to a digital system. My question is can the mute alone connect to a digital system? I play for my church and need to have a microphone. I have an old mute that I use for certain songs due to the sound difference and am looking for a mic that can switch to mute mode.

Didn't even know there was a Gen 2 until I watched this video. I've owned a Gen 1 for many years, but rarely use it. Based on your review, I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy a Gen 2. Just not enough difference to justify the expenditure, especially considering how little I use a practice mute. Thanks for the insights.

It is a little tricky, but the issue of resistance with multiple valves down is not as significant as the general lack of slotting and increasing sharpness the lower you play. The open low C is very much not down to pitch.
Hi Sam, how's the Soprano going? I heard that there are specific mutes for soprano cornet, and a quick online search shows that to be true for a denis wick cup mute. What do you think... is the Bb cup mute going to be OK with the soprano?
I’ll be honest, Peter-I’m having a devilishly hard time with the soprano. It’s a herculean task, trying to get the right sound concept while maintaining good flexibility and intonation. Not to mention I can’t seem to find a mouthpiece that matches well with the horn.
To answer your question, unfortunately, it depends. The sop I am borrowing from the local band-a Kanstul 1536-has a bell flare and throat profile almost as large as a Bb, so it can take all the same mutes. However, as you’ve seen, there are mutes designed for more typical Eb bell profiles. I would say if you have an adjustable cup on your Bb mute, then you might be fine using your sop. If the cup is fixed in place, it’s no good for soprano, as the cup will be too far from the bell rim to have the proper sound and intonation.

I know what you're saying there. I've just come across a Vincent Bach Corp 2C mouthpiece that for me makes life so much easier.
Before I got his mouthpiece on Sunday afternoon from a fellow bandsman I struggled to get high C's, now they're a piece of cake!
The right mouthpiece really does make a huge difference. I'm also getting way more volume, which our band conductor wants from me. (I thought that I was loud before, now I know that I'm loud!)
I'm playing a Getzen 3892 sop that is 3 years old buy barely used by the first owner who plays solo cornet in other bands. I've had the use of it for 9 mths now.
My cup-mute is an adjustable one so I guess that I should put the cup part closer to the bell for parts which require a cup mute.
I've been thinking about a Yamaha Silent Brass mute system so I was especially pleased to see your review of the new vs old versions.
There is a lot to think about. Currently I have a sshhmute for practice at home. It makes my wife happy as she can watch TV in the lounge whilst I practice in the bedroom.
I used to find that there was too much back pressure but now, not at all. The new mouthpiece has made my week!

@@peterwise143 I play a Corp. 2C on Eb trumpet! Still on the safari when it comes to sop, as there are many different mouthpieces that work “okay” but none “great” just yet. Also, if you’re playing a Getzen (not exactly a conventional “small” size soprano) I reckon an adjustable mute for Bb will be just fine. Blessings to you and your folks as well!
If you scale up to trombone mutes there is another factor: the 1.Gen mute makes the horn really front heavy so your holding arm gets tired really fast, so I am planning to change to version 2 on trombone

hello, is it possible to send backing tracks to the headphones, via bluetooth, perhaps from youtube?
I don’t think these headphones are bluetooth-enabled. I could be wrong, but I believe you’d need some sort of digital interface, which is beyond my capabilities.
I use the gen 2 french horn version. Nothing compares to playing without a practice mute, but the Silent Brass is probably as close as it gets...

Thanks for the comment! The difference in resistance is almost unnoticeable. Not worth buying a whole new mute, in my opinion. However, if you find the old Silent Brass muddies your articulations too much, the newer one can certainly help.
I too have the old gen and didn't like the resistance. I drilled a quarter inch hole in the end and reduced the resistance without much increase in volume.
What is the average price of the Gen 2??
I've had a gen 1 with all the digital reverb etc. Really high blow resistance and kept plopping out of the bell while playing. I now use the rubber bit of a plunger that just fits over the bell. I drilled a 8mm hole in the middle. More silent and less resistance than the yamaha.
Hm, that sure is interesting. I drilled a sizable hole in the middle of my plunger for the sake of lessening resistance, but it still sounds awful if I have the bell fully covered. The slots are practically nonexistent. Well, whatever works for you!
@@SamuelPlaysBrass Must be a different brand of plunger then or me having luck with the right size hole or something. It really is the best practice mute I've had.
The new one has less resistance. Playing is a bit easier.
There is now a 3rd generation, which uses the same gen.2 mute you are demoing except with an updated "personal studio". You don't show the controllers into which they plug. Or talk about them. Seeing as your video appeared around the same time as gen 3 it would be appreciated if you commented about whether your Gen.2 is plugged into the SBX or the SBJ model Personal Studio.
This demo was not really about any of the electronic features, just the raw mute sound itself. Truth be told, I haven’t messed with the studio box much. I tried it a few times when I first got the mute in high school but found it a little acoustically disorienting.
@@SamuelPlaysBrass Yeah I can understand that. For those playing along at home, his is the SB7X gen 2 Studio. I've been trying to find out if the SBJ is louder in headphones, as this was and is still my major gripe with the 'Studio' box.

The new Stomvie USA practice mute is awesome in term of volume output as well.
