    In the late 70's, there was a novel called "The Front Runner," about a gay runner, and his coach, and the Montreal Olympics. The novel became a best seller, and there was talk of a film, and they wanted Redford as the runner, and Newman as the coach. I happened to write a theme for the movie I called "Frontrunner." Newman was afraid of public opinion, at the time, so the film was never made. It's now on TH-cam....just piano/vocal. Look for it by Gene Howard Klein, if interested.

    I believe you got a couple things wrong. I have heard interviews with both actors over the years and I seem to remember Paul was originally hired to be Sundance. When Robert came into the picture it was decided it would be better for the roles to be reversed. Also, while McQueen and Newman were contemporaries they were not really friends. McQueen was the first choice for Butch Cassidy... but his demands became so petty and unreasonable that he was dropped. When they made the Towering Inferno together McQueen actually required he would have the exact same number of lines as Newman. Redford and Newman were so great together it is sad they could never find another project that they both liked.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I vaguely remember that, and then when they went to Newman about his billing on Inferno to see if he was going to make the same demands as McQueen I think I read he just said "I don't give a shit" or something like that.

Newman would call frequently and every time she answered the phone, he'd yell "REDFORD!!!!", and of course, after the first time it happened, she knew who it was and would politely say that she'd connect him right away! I loved Robert Redford in Out of Africa. He and Meryl were perfect together. One of my favourite movies ever.
    The Sting was fun but Sundance was a great movie and deserves more recognition for both actors. Their timing was perfect and their connection undeniable

    *Research please....* Paul was set to be Sundance, but switched roles so Robert could take the role more suited to him.

    I think both of them are my favorite actors and I liked both movies they did a lot and I’ve re-watch them a lot I can’t really tell you which is my favorite because it’s been very humid is that both of them have made I haven’t liked

    They could both make a scene sizzle, that's for sure. Prior to "A Walk in the Woods," they could never find a script
    that either of them liked. I do believe "A Walk in the Woods" was definately a film they could've made into a huge
    hit. They thrived on conflict and humor as actors. Paul was too old by then. I didn't particularly like the script or
    the acting with Bob and Nick, but the story itself certainly had a lot of possibilities.

    It was madness that they didn't make another film together, you would of thought that one of the studios didn't setup a special script search especially for these two,the films they could of done,

    No, no, no. Steve McQueen was the first person hired for the film, and he was hired to play Butch. Paul was brought in to play Sundance. McQueen dropped out because the studio wanted to give Newman top billing. Joanne Woodward, Newman's wife, is the one who suggested Redford.

    Too bad the only made two films together, given their on-screen chemistry. I think what made their on-screen chemistry so well is because they were actually genuine friends in real-life.

    Paul Newman and Robert Redford were a pair made in heaven. If they had been gay; they would have been the FIRST and MOST FAMOUS GAY COUPLE ON THE PLANET!!! I live in the State and close to the City where Joanne Woodward went to high school and I enjoy watching her movies. Big, big fan of Paul's and Big, big, BiG fan of Robert's. Great video!

    Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid has to be the best western ever. I've been told a few times by afficianados that it's not a real western. If it isn't, then I guess I don't like westerns.
    And The Sting is The Sting. 'Nuff said.

    Paul Newman was set to play Sundance initially. After Redford was cast he convinced director George Roy Hill to give him Sundance. That's been corroborated numerous times by both men.
