What a man! It's 1959 and Paul Newman's seems to go out of his way to let his wife shine. Wonderful!

She did outshine him for a while. She won an Oscar way before he ever did. He had seven nominations without a win then he wins for "The Color of Money". His performances in "The Verdict", "The Sting", and "Hud" were far more Oscar-worthy.

@movingonandup773 The Levy biography has some good things, sure, but so many inconsistencies too, I definitely wouldn't take his word for it on the more salacious anecdotes.
Basically, he took a tabloid story no one at the time paid any attention to and just ran with it, the only "confirmation" he has is that Joanne added some memorabilia from the butch cassidy movie - when the supposed affair took place - to a charity auction out of "spite".
Nancy Bacon's story doesn't even make sense, if you google her, you'll find her tell all book, but seriously, none of the dates match. She did say they have never had sex because he was drunk all the time, but I think we would've had plenty of raunchy stories to choose from if that was the case, she claimed they were parading around in hollywood to reinforce his sex-symbol status and yet not a single person was able to back her up. Sounds a bit fishy to me.
Now, the thing about rumors is that sometimes they're true. With Paul and Joanne... yeah, I think they had something going on for far longer than we want to admit. It's cute to imagine them getting the roles in Long, Hot Summer was just fate bringing them together, but honestly? They were most likely chosen BECAUSE people were already commenting on a supposed affair - regardless of how private they were about it.
Rumor has it Joanne only got shortly engaged to Gore Vidal (who was literally living with his boyfriend in Malibu at the time) to nudge Newman into getting a divorce and it worked! He separated not long after.

PAUL NEWMAN was my favorite male actor AND movie star of all time. He made so many of my all-time favorite films that would take me all night long to name, but a few of the very BEST IMO were: HUD, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH (mentioned here as he originated the role on Broadway), THE HUSTLER, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, THE VERDICT and so many more but he was also the most handsome movie star of all time and one of the most generous, starting with the Hole in the Wall gang and then Newman's Own products which donated ALL of their profits to charity (over $200 million in his lifetime.) We shall never see the likes of him again in Hollywood. May he RIP.

This is classic footage. I was 7 years old when The Sting came out and I knew who Paul Newman was by then as well as Robert Redford. I couldn't watch it in the movies because my parents wouldn't let me watch a PG rated movie lol!
But it came on ABC Sunday Night Movie (remember that?) a couple of years later and I saw it. Even as a child I knew I was seeing some next level acting and screen presence. That card game scene with Robert Shaw is a masterpiece from both men.
At some point I saw Butch Cassidy and was blown away there as well. But it's nice to go back and see these legends when they were really young. And see how classy and dignified people presented themselves. We could really use some of that now.

themurph2000 -- For one thing, neither Paul Newman nor Joanne Woodward displayed any tattoos. I always find Angelina Jolie to be rather offputting when she shows up on an awards show in a strapless dress so we can see the "ink" or her upper arm and possibly elsewhere. Me, if I were an actor or an actress, I wouldn't get a tattoo because it would quite possibly present problems when acting, at least in certain stages of undress. Then there are those male actors nowadays who, when they take off their shirts, show the world that once they got the first tattoo, they couldn't stop themselves from getting one after the other, again and again and again, the way Joan Rivers handled getting plastic surgery.

Dear What's My Line? Thank you for these amazing uploads. I've been enjoying them for several weeks. I was born in the 1960s and grew up watching all of the celebrity guests in the movies, on Broadway and on TV. Such a treat and so generous of you and your time. I love the show's elegance and cordiality of a time past (back in my day we DRESSED to go to Broadway then dinner at Howard Johnson's) and appreciate how you replicate that here with how clearly you moderate. A pleasure to visit this channel.

One of the kindest posts of gratitude that I've seen. (And well deserved). I applaud Gina Greenlee.

A beautiful couple who just happened to act, rather than actors who happened to be married. There for each other and devoted. I had that once, for a dozen years. Not fifty years like these two, but I know I was lucky to have had it at all.

I just noticed it in most of the episodes. I think it became Arlene's mannerism to touch that heart pendant in her neck whenever she asked questions. 💓 She's lovely. 💓

Those were truly the good old days. Here they are young and beautiful and now, well ...that makes me sad.

Joanne Woodward REMAINS one of my favorite actors, and I’m OLD! When I was a teen I considered her plain but it’s completely evident how very beautiful she is.

I had just had my 8th birthday when this episode aired. My family watched this show regularly as well as To Tell the Truth.
