White vinegar works in place of lemon juice when DIYing your buttermilk. And the vinegar is reasonably cheap, multifunctional, and won't eventually spoil like the lemon will.

@@Mchem1st As a condiment heavy household, they aren't always cheap. For the palates in this house $1 mustard will not due. Although it will last for a few years as we simply don't use it often. Family gifted hubby a large bottle of it from his favorite restaurant and that lasted 4 years. Ketchup, mayo, and 3-6 varieties of salad dressing are monthly purchases. Hot sauce, Worcestershire, steak sauce, BBQ, and hosin (sp?) are 3-6 month purchases. Soy and 'lets try it' are 8-12 month purchases. I will be glad when we get the canning/pickling going again as purchasing all the pickling products they like at store prices is a small fortune compared to doing his mothers recipes.

@@donnakennedy430 I'm a little late on the reply, but the sachets of mustard woudln't be any better than the $1 bottle so I think it's kind of a moot point. Plus I don't really think there's room to be talking about being picky when you're keeping everything under $2 imo.

    • @terriharvey1053
      @terriharvey1053 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Reheat in microwave, skillet, oven, air fryer or indoor grill. Remove foil before microwaving. You can wrap it in a paper towel to reheat in microwave. I would use parchment paper instead of foil anyway.

    • @esthersam2907
      @esthersam2907 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A little late, but you can try wrapping it in parchment paper and reheating it on high for about 2mins straight from the refrigerator, 10mins in sequences from the freezer (unless your microwave has a defrost option, use that first then heat on high for 5mins). But if you do have it, an airfryer works superbly in reheating frozen prepped meals. Otherwise, an oven is also a safe choice.

I love that Frankie included the way to make buttermilk from scratch (milk + lemon juice = buttermilk). But if anyone does have extra buttermilk, you can marinate chicken in buttermilk so there won't be any waste. Roasting/baking chickens marinated in buttermilk is delicious 😍. Another plus side is that marinated chickens marinated in buttermilk is similar to having an insurance because you can overcooked the chicken ten minutes and it'll still turn out delicious 😋 🐔

Another possibility for the buttermilk is buying buttermilk powder from a bulk food store. It's shelf stable and the cost may be lower. Also the biscuits looked a little flat. The baking powder may have been old. Instead of buying baking powder you can substitute 2 parts cream of tartar and one part baking soda. The soda can be used for cleaning around the house instead of a cleaning powder like Ajax.

Ok for anyone who is curious, here are some cost breakdowns in terms of what it could cost you at the actual store.
First up, I can tell you he probably got the oatmeal and the pecans at bulk prices to get it so cheap. Most grocery stores have a section where you can go in the back and weigh and measure what you want. Oatmeal is pretty cheap but pecans cost anywhere from $4 to $5 dollars for a little bag at most grocery stores. Buying in bulk saves you money.
If you can't get oatmeal in bulk, you can always buy it at the local dollar tree in a canister for a buck. You get about two cups worth in a cannister so you would have to buy two to get enough for this recipe and have some left over. They also sell baking goods there, so I would pick up the cinnamon, salt and vanilla extract there. They also sell pecans there too. Some stores also sell frozen fruit like blueberries, which can be subbed in place of fresh. They also sell maple syrup there too. Granted, the quality isn't going to be as good as other places, but broke is broke, right?
    So Dollar Tree Total:
    2 oatmeal cannisters 2.00
    cinnamon 1.00
    salt 1.00
    vanilla extract 1.00
    2 bags Pecans 2.00
    2 bags frozen blueberries 2.00
    1 bottle maple syrup. 1.00
    Total $10.00
Some of these items you may not be able to get at the dollar store so you'll have to go to other stores to get it. ALDI is the cheapest grocery store by far, so if you have one near you I would recommed it. But these are based on regular grocery prices.
    Grocery Store
Nutmeg (buying whole is cheaper) $4 - $6
    Butter $4 - $5 box 4 sticks
    Eggs $2 - 3 dozen
    Milk $2 - 4 gallon
Bananas .30 - .40 lb. sale. (price varies)
    Aproz $12 - 13
    Grand Total $22 - 23 dollars.
Mind you some of these items don't need to be purchased again the following week, like the milk, butter, eggs, and the nutmeg. The other ingredients like the cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract will also last you a while so you don't need to purchase them again. So really, the following week your bill at the dollar store would be:
    Dollar Store
    Oatmeal 1.00
    Pecans 2.00
    Maple syrup 1.00
    Frozen blueberries 2.00
    Grand Total $6.00
Remember, we still have a cup of oatmeal left from the cannister we bought from last week because we bought four cups and used three in the recipe. So we only need to buy one cannister of oatmeal for this week.
Having extras on hand is one of the ways to help reduce costs.
    Grocery Store
    Bananas .30 - .40 c a pound
    Grand Total approx. $7.00
The butter, salt and maple syrup you could get for free if you eat at restaurants and diners like IHOP. Next time you get to order food or go out to eat always ask for or grab some extra condiments with your order on the way out. If they don't charge you extra for them, it's basically free food. Also grab extra straws, napkins and spoons and forks.
Or if you are really desperate you can just take them when nobody is watching. Just be aware you'll need to steal a lot of maple syrup for this recipe, lol. In general though, don't make stealing a habit ok?
1/2 a teaspon worth of kosher salt is going to come out as a couple of cents per serving since you can get several teaspoons out of one container of salt that costs $1.00. That's how they calculate the cost for these videos.
    Hope this helps.

Cheaper breakfast sandwich is get a 12 pack of English muffins, one pound (small tube) of sausage a dozen eggs and the cheap yellow cheese. Toast muffins. Make the sausage into 12 patties (salt pepper and sugar on them while frying) scramble your eggs and then assemble. Wrap in a slightly damp paper towel and then shove them back into your English muffins bag and freeze. Microwave 1-1:30 minutes for a cheap breakfast Sammy. About 50c a sandwich around here

Breakfast is the BEST meal to make at home because it's so incredibly inexpensive, easy and tastes great. No reason to even make it ahead and freeze in most cases as it's so quick. I even have a small pancake recipe that makes 2 pancakes in under 10 minutes...perfect for one person or with eggs for two. We'll often make a double batch of waffles (to use ALL the buttermilk) and freeze them for a quick breakfast on the quick. A nice slice of REAL ham goes well with the eggs and heats quickly in the pan using residual heat.

These were all great but just wanted to pass on one tip.
When making scones ('biscuits') put them close together on the tray and then they'll rise nicely. Forces them to go up instead of out, law of gravity! :)

pro tip: for free/cheap tupperware, wash and save glass jars when you buy something like jam. i’d recommend a widemouth jar with about 16 oz. as capacity, but big pickle jars are helpful too.

    *Breakfast Buns*
    *Bread Dough:*
    4 Cups bread flour
    ¾ Cup warm milk
    2 Teaspoon rapid rise yeast
    ¼ Cup white sugar
    4 Eggs
    ½ Tablespoon salt
    ¾ Cup melted butter
    *Filling:*
    2 tablespoons butter
    4 large eggs, lightly beaten
    1/2 cup chopped red onions
¼ cup chopped scallion (use green part only)
    1 3/4 cups canned tuna
    1/3 cup Kewpie Mayonnaise
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon pepper
    *Bread Dough:*
Mix together warm milk, yeast, sugar and eggs. Mix flour and salt, add melted butter. Combine egg mixture to the flour mixture, mix well to form a dough. Turn dough into a well-floured surface and knead until soft and elastic. Place the kneaded dough in a well-oiled bowl. Cover with a cloth and allow to rise for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
    *Filling:*
Firstly, add butter to the cooking pan. Once the butter is melted, add chopped red onion and scallions and stir for a few minutes till it is cooked. Add canned tuna into the pan and give a stir for few more minutes. Make sure you don't include the water from the tuna, for this will cause the oil to splatter. Add the beaten egg and mayo to the pan and stir to mix with the tuna. Lastly, add salt and black pepper for taste, and stir again before turning off the heat.
    *Preparation:*
Divide dough into six portions; roll each portion into an 8-in. x 3-in. rectangle. Spoon 1/3 cup of tuna egg mixture on half of each rectangle. Fold over and seal edges. Place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes. Brush tops with beaten egg. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Grate frozen butter, it works best! You can buy buttermilk powder. Just keep it in the frig. Personally I prefer plain milk. Also brush some milk on top of the biscuits before baking. It makes em purdier!
