This is why the best advice to any newcomer is to choose the character that looks cool to you. It doesnt matter if the characters easy or hard, as long as you like them, you'll learn them.
Nah man, if Drag wasn't Godlike, every beginner would drop him coz they'd lose 90% of the time. It's no wonder that the most picked characters are the strongest. Both Drag and King are up there.
I understand and I agree with this, but you underestimate how little loyalty people have to their mains. Hell that tzitzi guy is a prime example of that
@@tzitzitzitzi1584 I feel like if you have a character that seems interested, in due time you’ll like them. No matter character or tier. You can make it work.
@johngreek0424 Don't even try it bro, I've been maining fucking Lee Chaolan for the entire Tekken 7 and still rocking him till this day. If you know the bare minimum about tekken7 , you should understand what this means.
@premiumtimbs4038 The thing is, beginners and especially content creators, just want to make content. Most of them drop the game once they hit their target rank. So if their main doesn't give them wins , they will drop them coz no content will be made. Take him for example. He almost reached orange ranks and doesn't use frame advantage NOR combos 🤣. It's crazy if you think about it. Just grabs and a few pokes. Once he encounters people that can tech grabs, he's basically free. I'd say that red ranks is where you begin to see actual skill in tekken and just grabs are enough to carry a Drag in that ranks coz no skill is required until that point for Drag. He won a round with 2 grabs and his heat smash. To even get in orange ranks with Lee, I had to learn semi-optimal combos and setups and also a few basic ducks and punishes for the most picked characters. Meanwhile, dudes out here grabbing their way to red ranks.
If someone is not being sporting and is very obviously mocking you, or if the connection is poor, these are acceptable reasons not to rematch when you have time to play. Otherwise, we rematch. Even if you're getting unbelievably trounced and outclassed it will do you way more good to lose horribly again paying as much attention as you can than to avoid fighting again. The loss in points is temporary, the steady increase of understanding can be permanent. SO excited that your eye is on Steve! Such a cool moveset, going to be a blast learning those vicious counter hits and stance transitions! Your attitude toward losing has improved DRASTICALLY and I would say that is the main reason you're improving so well.
Afro, been loving the series, I am also new to Tekken (been playing 2D for a minute tho) and coincidentally main Drag, I have a couple tips that can easily give you 1-2 ranks: 1. At these ranks, if you land a grab/ get a hard knockdown that results in the opponent being somewhat close to you on the ground, use db3+4. Does a shitload of damage, and more importantly... 2. Drag has a low grab, d1+3 or d2+4. you can use things like d2 and db3+4 to condition your opponents to block low, then JOINK them with the low grab! The low grab is also a heat engager, meaning you get good damage, get to keep up your pressure, and you actually do insane psychological damage to your opponent by calling them the FUCK out with the low grab (which ONLY works if they are crouching). This is a very reliable tactic even up to more advanced ranks, it's simple conditioning/mind games, and you are definitely at the point skill-wise where you can start playing mind games. Also, you definitely need to learn one of Dragunov's bread-and-butter combos, they are very easy and do a shitload of damage. Hope this helps, keep it up!
Wait this advice is killer. I don’t main Draganov but this is insanely useful information for the matchup since I surprisingly barely get matched against a Drag.
This was such a fun thing to see. Actual consistent uploads after YEARS OF PROMISES! Actual progress and from one of the most least expected games in afro catalogue.
Hey afro a point of thumb in fighting games is that learning neutral is comes way before learning combos, so dw about it combos are last in the learning order cause you cannot get into them if you dont understand neutral/pokes/punishes
Back 4, 2, 1 is a great pressure string. And learned drags bnb combo and you'll be set for red ranks. Also forward, forward, hold forward 4 is a high damage wall splat grab
Really appreciate this series Afro, been watching you since your Elden Ring play through and have always wanted to get into fighting games but have always been ass at them and never given them the time. Now because of this series I’ve bought Tekken 8 and feel super motivated to get better at the game. Much love bro and keep up the great content 🙏
You're right about at the point where learning and enforcing a frame trap will get you to the next level. You still don't even need big combos yet tbh, just stay patient, mix up attack heights, and put your opponent into a "block or get hit" situation and you'll be in red ranks soon enough
Hey Afro! I've been loving the Tekken content recently, I've been playing this series since my uncle introduced me to it back when Tekken 5 was out. I normally don't comment on videos but I just wanted to recommend some people you can watch to learn more about this game. PhiDX has some excellent videos explaining the mechanics of the game and JDCR is a professional Korean Tekken play that plays Drag so maybe watching him can give you some ideas on what you can attempt in combos or just in general. Anyways, I'm happy to see you and so many people giving this game the love it deserves! Keep up the grind!
With the tackle grab you keep doing you have 3 options 1, 2 or 1+2 which you keep doing, they all need to be broken with different buttons so when they start breaking 1+2 consistently you should try mix it up a little.
watching afro's journey in tekken 8 is soo entertaining! also you have come a long long way! clap clap! the dedication and hardwork of learning the game, character and match environment is amazing!
Advice from an ex tournament player: When u do that low grab fam, dont always press 1+2 after, sometimes press just 1 or 2 instead. Reason why is because they have to press a different button to break it when you do that so that will be a mixup in itself. Do that and learn the sample combos in training mode that are at the bottom of your move list, not to "copy" them but more so you know how certain moves combo together. Good luck fam you're making better progress than most newcomers!
Yeah the impatience is getting to you sometimes. You get excited or mad and throw out your rage art which they either block or dodge and then you get clapped. Tho I'm not one to talk lol I do the same thing.
Little bit of advice. Use the replay system. Tekken 8 has really great replay features where you can even take over your character in that replay and attempt to do something different. It even has the option to give suggestions on what you could’ve done at points in the match. It can help a lot in when you want to learn from mistakes and improve
i love watching these videos as i learn the game too, especially cuz we're consistently keeping a similar rank. 1 word of advice that has helped me alot, is look up the different options you have for standing up to avoid getting caught in shitty loops
One thing to implement I would say would be to do more side stepping like you did that one time against the king player, the game is like fencing but you have the adage of just changing your angles mid combat. I'd love the journey so far Afro!
It's great to see how far Afro has gone he used to rage quit and now look at him, he's actually really good also the fights got me on the edge of my seat
I turned Steve into Nanami, just for that punch scene in season 2. Now Law is Nanami. Nanami’s English voice actor is actually also Marshall Law in this game. I wouldn’t have known that if I didn’t set a challenge to make a character a completely different character with a shared connection to a voice. It was hard as apparently Kazuya has only ever voiced Kazuya and has done since Tekken 4. But Lilli is the French VA for Disney’s Cinderella. Hwoarang is the Korean L Lawliet from Death Note. Asuka plays Shroedinger from Hellsing Ultimate. Victor is actually the English Monsieur Hood from Shrek. Alisa is Nana/Lucy from Elfen Lied. Lars is…. Seriously. You guys should check out the cast list to this game if you haven’t already.
The reason you are getting your tackles teched is because tackle can be eacaped at two different moments - once during the initial tackle (by pressing 1+2) where they stay standing and push you away, and again once they are on the ground. On the ground you have a couple of different grab options (ground and pound 1+2) and leg lock/break (1 or 2 I believe). Your mistake is that you keep using ground and pound so you basically trained them to mash 1+2 to escape both the initial tackle and the grab giving them 2 options to input the same command and mash out. Instead, mix up the ground and pound with the leg log. If you can get them to the ground, mix in the leg break because that requires a different input to break and you'll be able to keep them guessing. However, keep in mind that the higher you get in rank, some players will start punishing your tackle with a full launch combo on reaction so youll want to use it sparingly, catch them off guard or use it as a follow up to a +frames move that keeps you on the offensive and them slow to respond due to quick pressure.
He’s getting better!! that tackle grab you do has 3 options bro, you can hit square, triangle or square+triangle and each on has a different tech. If they tech one just use the others. Then It’s rock paper scissors.
Bruh no way another new intro 🤯, its been that long I rmm the other before that one and it’s one of my favs back in storm 3 and 4 days 😭😭 Mans Afro has been on a journey 🤧🥲
The only advice I can think to give comes in 3 parts. 1st is being more patient, 2nd is fighting more characters and gaining practical experience, and 3rd, learning what moves are Dragunov's most reliable punishes, combos are cool but knowing what move to use to capitalize on an opponent's mistakes is just as important as combos.
Bro, to be honest now. You showed us that you know 7 grabs at the beginning, then proceded to basically mostly spam 1 the whole video. What is the point of knowing 7 if 90% of the time you only do 1 and when the enemy learns to break it you just give up on grabs. Thats why you went back and forward, you used to few of your tools so your opponents learned to fight them.
Love watching your series bro ! Lemme give you some good advice that’ll help you a lot : - Use jab more. It’s perfect to check your opponent and keep them on place. It’s the fastest move in the game and it’s positive even on block. - Use dickjab to go out from pressure. It’s a little jab you made by pressing db1 (or d1, depends on characters). This is fast (10 frames) and go under high. - Don’t start to learn combos, start to learn your best moves at first. Think of it like a paper rock scissors, use a move that beat highs, one that beats low, one that beat armor move, one with good range, etc… Btw you’re doing well buddy. It’s really entertaining to see you having fun on this game. Wish you the best with Steve (who is probably one of the most complexe and hardest character to learn but I know this is not gonna stop you 💪😤). Peace
Oddly been having a similar journey to you here, haven't played a tekken properly since 3 and just made orange rank the other day. Its been very informative to watch the thought process behind what your doing. You have made it very far for knowing so few of his moves btw, most yellows and oranges I seem to fight know how to do allot of damage from a launcher.
In tekken 7 it was pretty common to back step at round start. That way you immediately have agency over spacing and not taking a coin toss of who hits who first.
Loving this journey, bro!!! The progress is amazing and you are doing awesome. Can't wait to see you get to Orange and to start with your new main. Definitely patience and I would suggest working on grab tech as well. If you can do it to people, they can do it back...but you are doing great 👌👌👌👌
Afro, if you’re struggling with a matchup I suggest using the online reply system after a match. It’ll give you tips on how to counter moves, then you can go into the situation and practice it a lil bit. Love the series man ✊🏽
I feel like ive been here forever since we got the intro from 2020, its crazy to think I've been here longer enough to witness a intro change. I'm happy to been here
sometimes I feel bad thinking that people assume I'm teabagging when it's just me being terrible at the game trying to sidestep and crouching repeatedly instead lol.
The best advice I can give is to move onto learning your wall splat combos(like you said in the video) and your moves to use when opp is on the ground instead of just standing and letting them jump kick you😂 but huge improvement going on man! This Tekken arc is awesome!
I’d honestly recommend learning some counter hit combos. You’ve played enough to be comfortable in neutral, so now I’d work on punishing people for pressing without thinking. W vid as always though
Got tekken 3 days ago and the moment i tried steve in practice, i KNEW he was the one i can lost 8 matches back to back but getting that one good duck weave punish will make it all worth it 😤
ur right, the matches here show the impatience of ur neutral game. u do good on the offensive mix but learning peoples neg frames will make you break thru
when you do the low grab you have 3 options so do not always go for the 1+2 option cuz eventually they will break it, so try to mix 1 and 2 options as well (rock paper scissors). Also, do the Uf 1+2 grab it's good. Finally, you can map certain combinations of buttons to one button ( for example, 2+3 to L1 or 1+2 to R2. you can even put it to R3/L3) so that the inputs get consistent.
The Dragunov doesn't look bad but you just have to be more knowledgeable AND watchful of your opponents options. And as a Steve main, you're making me consider Drag as a secondary
my best advice is to learn how to condition your opponent to do 1 thing then change it up on them. If you do alot of lows they'll get used to it and crouch, thats when you do an overhead or a bouncer move to combo from there. then you can keep switching from mid's to lows because they won't know what you're going for. Also get rid of your routine mindset, its hard to keep winning with the same moves you used in lower ranks. Especially in the higher ranks where people tech alot and are VERY patient
Both Drag and King are up there.

sometimes I feel bad thinking that people assume I'm teabagging when it's just me being terrible at the game trying to sidestep and crouching repeatedly instead lol.
The best advice I can give is to move onto learning your wall splat combos(like you said in the video) and your moves to use when opp is on the ground instead of just standing and letting them jump kick you😂 but huge improvement going on man! This Tekken arc is awesome!
This tekken content just keeps getting better and better.
This the most peaceful afro video I've ever seen
33:43 You just violated the KING....
These nightly Teken uploads are the perfect way to end the night ngl
I’d honestly recommend learning some counter hit combos. You’ve played enough to be comfortable in neutral, so now I’d work on punishing people for pressing without thinking. W vid as always though
You can have many mains in a fighting game, Afro. The world is your oyster! 😂😂😂
Got tekken 3 days ago and the moment i tried steve in practice, i KNEW he was the one
i can lost 8 matches back to back but getting that one good duck weave punish will make it all worth it 😤
ur right, the matches here show the impatience of ur neutral game. u do good on the offensive mix but learning peoples neg frames will make you break thru
Proud of our boy learning tekken 8!
Yo Afro try Arcade Quest it helps with your character with punishes and combo's for certain situations
when you do the low grab you have 3 options so do not always go for the 1+2 option cuz eventually they will break it, so try to mix 1 and 2 options as well (rock paper scissors). Also, do the Uf 1+2 grab it's good. Finally, you can map certain combinations of buttons to one button ( for example, 2+3 to L1 or 1+2 to R2. you can even put it to R3/L3) so that the inputs get consistent.
Love you Afro
That learning curve in the beginning was phenomenal
I love these customs
The Dragunov doesn't look bad but you just have to be more knowledgeable AND watchful of your opponents options. And as a Steve main, you're making me consider Drag as a secondary
Afro bro never forget the lows man. You are a killer when it comes to lows then you combo from there.🙌😤🔥
my best advice is to learn how to condition your opponent to do 1 thing then change it up on them.
Also I can definitely see the improvement in your play style over the last couple of vids
Toji on Law looks perfect.
