I am crying listening to this. We always sing this at my sleep away camp, so I know every word by heart. It reminds me of all the great people that I met there, some who I will see next year, and others that I won't. thank you for this beauty.
my 6 year old son's amazing and wonderful first grade teacher taught him this song, and I am so grateful to hear his angelic voice sing this beautiful song. Thank you, Bill.
Oh wow, Bill Staines became a important part of my life because of this song alone. I've just recently started to learn his other work, after a decade with this great song. He's a treasure.
Believe it or not we used to sing this at a Catholic Mass. Brings back a lot of memories. We also sang All God's Critters Got a Place in the Choir another one of his songs
Sure would love to have Bill come to Stone Mountain in Brownfield, Maine and sing for we old folkies again. This is about my favorite song of his. With the Saco and Shepard Rivers right here, it would be a real treat to us.
Bill Staines, this song was a part of my 1980s fun in the NW. I recorded it via cassette from the radio, so I never owned the cd. Today, i ordered it from B and N for $2!!! bring a. bit poor, I went with it, but would have happily bought a new copy! What a simple, yet wonderful melody with great lyrics.
i heard it in my english class book keystone and for 3 years it was stuck in my head so i decided to look for it and failed so i gave it a last try and here i am im so glad i found it
We went camping in Errol, NH for ten years straight, maybe more, and canoed down white water of the Androscoggin River (which flows to the Atlantic in Maine), my friends in canoes, I in a kayak which I had no idea how to use but I taught myself and the sounds of that river sang to me, sang quite clearly, some times this song or maybe it was me singing it in the roaring water.
Here are some the lyrics for this song. I was born in the path of the winter wind I was raised where the mountains are old Their springtime waters came dancing down And I remember the tales they told The whistling ways of my younger days Too quickly have faded on by But all of their memories linger on Like the light in a fading sky River, take me along in your sunshine, sing me a song Ever moving and winding and free You rolling old river, you changing old river Let's you and me, river, run down to the sea I've been to the city and back again I've been moved by some things that I've learned Met a lot of good people and I've called them friends Felt the change when the seasons turned I've heard all the songs that the children sing And listened to love's melodies I've felt my own music within me rise Like the wind in the autumn trees River, take me along in your sunshine, sing me a song Ever moving and winding and free You rolling old river, you changing old river Let's you and me, river, run down to the sea Someday when the flowers are blooming still Someday when the grass is still green My rolling waters will round the bend And flow into the open sea So, here's to the rainbow that's followed me here And here's to the friends that I know And here's to the song that's within me now I will sing it wherever I go River, take me along in your sunshine, sing me a song Ever moving and winding and free You rolling old river, you changing old river Let's you and me, river, run down to the sea
It was 1982 in Keene, NH when I first heard this song and heard Bill sing it. Transplanted from Michigan I had a job at a camp school called Nature's Classroom. We sang this and other Bill Staines songs many nights at quiet sings for the kids.. Brings back so many memories.. Didn't he somehow play his guitar upside down?
Bill Staines will be playing afree concert at BIg Spring park near Van Buren, Missouri on June 14 at 7:30. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for this free concert on the banks fo the Current River. See you there!
it's a river song and i like it because of the love for rivers, sad to say, which are almost dry during summer and flooded during monsoon. but was it not the human being without a bit thinking who dam them not properly channeling? at least we have to think the whole civilisations are born on the banks of rivers and dead due to the meddling of greedy men we must respect the rivers. that's what bill stanes reminds us...

I floated down the Yang Xi river with him and my mother. Now it is dammed and the river is no more. Thousands of years buried by a lake now...

Here are some the lyrics for this song.
I was born in the path of the winter wind
I was raised where the mountains are old
Their springtime waters came dancing down
And I remember the tales they told
The whistling ways of my younger days
Too quickly have faded on by
But all of their memories linger on
Like the light in a fading sky
River, take me along in your sunshine, sing me a song
Ever moving and winding and free
You rolling old river, you changing old river
Let's you and me, river, run down to the sea
I've been to the city and back again
I've been moved by some things that I've learned
Met a lot of good people and I've called them friends
Felt the change when the seasons turned
I've heard all the songs that the children sing
And listened to love's melodies
I've felt my own music within me rise
Like the wind in the autumn trees
River, take me along in your sunshine, sing me a song
Ever moving and winding and free
You rolling old river, you changing old river
Let's you and me, river, run down to the sea
Someday when the flowers are blooming still
Someday when the grass is still green
My rolling waters will round the bend
And flow into the open sea
So, here's to the rainbow that's followed me here
And here's to the friends that I know
And here's to the song that's within me now
I will sing it wherever I go
River, take me along in your sunshine, sing me a song
Ever moving and winding and free
You rolling old river, you changing old river
Let's you and me, river, run down to the sea
