    I have been to horn strandir. It failed in a day. We prepared a lot, but it was such a bummer. I want to go there again after watching your video.

    I love your video - that is how a hiking trip in this remote region should be presented. No drama, no vain comments, music only to cover the noise of the boat engine. The Pictures, the sound of the nature, especially the birds give me a flash back ten years ago, when I did this trip, also alone. I really appriciat it. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

      Thank you Dietrich! Yes, this place deserves its own natural sound, I brought my sound recorder this trip and you're right sometimes music distracts from the experience, especially for solo hiking. What route did you take back then?

    I like the short clips and scenes in details of the steps. they are parts of awareness of nature beyound your feet and in the air. It seems you have found a way to feel free. good luck continuing your way :)

    I just found this video and let me tell you it is great. I've seen many videos that are edited with many drone views and they're really amazing, I love them of course. But I love your views. They are how the human eye see those places when you go hiking or when you are just sitting in front of them to contemplate and you listen the water hitting the rocks, the birds flying, the wind blowing through the grass. I love It.

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Eric RV, yes drone views are cool but it is not allowed to fly drones in Hornstrandir (permits are difficult to obtain) due to disturbing birds along the cliffs. But it is hard to control as there's hardly anybody there, I didn't see anyone during the last three days. I plan on going to Hornstrandir every year, it is the most amazing hike I have made and can make in Iceland.

      Hi! Thanks, its a great place to wander and I did most of the hiking on my own, that makes it even more special to me.

      @@ReneKnoop Could you tell me where you got the maps from that show the trail, if they do, or do you just do your best to find it? I only did one-night trips while travelling around the Westfjords, parked the car and went with my friends to camp at some nice place. I have been looking at the eastern part of Westfjords, starting at the end of 649 as far as I could drive with a normal car and then hike north on F649 and further north.
      Can you recommend any 2-3 day trips in the area if you know, something car accessible? Thank you for any info!

    Algoritme bracht me bij deze upload. Schitterende opnamen, kan me voorstellen dat het een prachtige hike geweest moet zijn. Verheug me om binnenkort meer te bekijken. Wat is IJsland fantastisch. Wanneer de omstandigheden het toelaten zullen we Dec 21 - Jan 22 weer naar deze ultieme bestemming afreizen en het nu eens in winterse sferen ontdekken.
    Hartelijke groet!

      Takk, Columbus II. IJsland is prachtig in de winter en alhoewel er maar en paar uur daglicht is, is als het gesneeuwd heeft en volle maan 's nachts bijna net zo licht als overdag...met grote kans op noorderlicht. Laatste weken waren top voor Noorderlicht. Succes met voorbereiden en veel plezier.

    Excellent video. Last summer, first week of August, I was at Hornvik for 5 days, hiking from there in three directions. The weather was fine on the last two: lots of foxes, seals etc. Hoping this summer to do a longer circuit, such as Hestair to Gjogur. I am interested to see that you survived on 'dry backpacking food' for so many days, so it is clearly possible!

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Colin, I hiked from 17th till 27th of July last year. Yes, I am planning to do something like Gjogur to Saebol this year.
      About the food...it's possible but a bit difficult. I think a good plan would be to have something drop off at Hornvik by ferry, so you can stock up halfway. I know it's possible, saw it done by a couple other hikers and it worked well. That would limit the weight on the backpack (was around 18kg).
      Enjoy planning and maybe see you in Hornstrandir this summer!

    How did you pass beyond the beach past Sæból near the Hvartfnúpur mountain? The sea was hitting the wall of that mount and I didn't see a route to go through so I had to turn back.

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Jose, thanks, the dji is small and a great camera with a great gimbal. And I like the quality of the footage. I think the GoPro has a wider view with some distortion and the DJI is imho better for this type of filming.

    Great video! I'm spending 10 days in Iceland this summer and want to reserve at least 2 days for the Westfjords, if not more. I'll have a camper van, am I able to even access Horstrandir? I don't see any roads on the map that get up there. I won't have time for a long multiday trek like you did but wouldn't mind a 10 to 20 mile hike on Horstrandir, assuming I can drive up there. Any recs?

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, there are no roads leading to Hornstrandir, only access is by boat from Isafjordur or from Reykjarfjörður on the north coast. As both places are a long drive to get to, two days in the Westfjords will leave you not much time to explore Hornstrandir. It is possible to take a ferry all the way to the Hjornvik and hike the cliffs in one day.
      I would suggest a bit more time in the Westfjords, it’s beautiful up there.
      Good luck planning and if there’s any more I can help you with, let me know.

    Hi René, wat een schitterende video! Ik ga volgende maand naar IJsland om ongeveer dezelfde route te lopen. Ik zit zelf nog in een dubio welk schoeisel ik ga meenemen om de riviertjes over te steken. Wat zou jou advies zijn?

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hoi Michael, thanks. Ik heb altijd waterschoenen mee vanwege de stenen en rotsen in de riviertjes. Blote voeten is niet aan te raden. Verder heb ik ook altijd een set spikes mee, die rubber versie die je onder je schoenzolen klemt. Dat is handig voor sneeuw op een helling maar ook afdalen van de soms zeer steile hellingen als het regenachtig en modderig is.
      Succes eb veel plezier op je trip.

    • @michaelgroen8707
      @michaelgroen8707 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hoi Rene, bedankt voor je snelle reactie en advies! Wat was je ervaring met de getijden? Is dat nog een groot hoogte verschil? Het getijden overzicht kun je plaatselijk daar bij de tourist information ophalen toch?

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelgroen8707 Ja, in Isafjordur kun je een getijden tabel ophalen, dat zijn wel de tijden voor Reykjavik (+2 uur voor West fjords) en uit mijn ervaring is het tot 2 tot3 uur voor/na laagtij nog goed te doen.

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I camped near the lighthouse, did you see the the fox den under the wooden stairs? Seven pups playing around all evening. I really liked this route, especially the first part along the coast.

    • @EaglewoodADV
      @EaglewoodADV 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReneKnoop there were many foxes running around the lighthouse (we were quite exhausted and stayed inside), but didn’t see the den. This was my 2nd time in Hornstrandir, should do the coastal part on my 3rd. Possibly all the way from/to Djupavik.

    wow! wonderful video and such a great adventure! I have a few planning questions if I may...how did you get to Hrafnfjörður? Did one of the 2 boat companies let you schedule this? Can you recommend a good topo map? Did you have any issues carrying 12 days of food? Honestly your pack didn't look that heavy, lol! thanks! Again such a great video!

    • @ReneKnoop
      @ReneKnoop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Phil, Thanks.a lot. Yes, both companies sail to Hrafnfjörður in July and August. I've used All Trails as my planning map and I use maps.me to navigate (works without phone service). I carried mostly dried backpacking food for the days, with crackers, nuts, energy bars and blueberries for snacks. You don't need to bring water, every water source is drinkable in Iceland (except for a few with a lot of bird droppings in it). My backpack totalled around 18/19 kg. I invested in light gear as tent and sleeping bag, so that helped a lot.
