Thank you for the information. I am from Singapore. My husband and I are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary this July by spending 23 days in Iceland. We will be leisurely driving the Ring road anti clockwise and doing lots of hiking. We have already booked ourselves a 2 night stay in Borgarfjordur Eystri and are really looking forward to seeing and photographing the super cute Altantic puffins.
Thanks for the great info! Just wondering how successful we would be seeing puffins mid April at any of these locations? I haven't had any luck finding tours that run in April 😢
Can I ask, we are coming to Iceland in early September, and saw this video and would love to see some puffins. We will travel close to Borgarfjörður eystri and I am wondering if this is too late to see them and not worth the two hour drive to get there to find they have all gone. Is there a realistic cut off date for not seeing puffins at Borgarfjörður eystri? Thanks in advance.
Great question! There are several whale watching tours that offer puffin sightings during roosting season. You'll find that most of those whale & puffin tours only run until mid-August (the latest date I've seen is August 20th). They stop promising puffin sightings at this time because year after year they've seen the last of the puffins by then. Unfortunately, I cannot reassure you that even a few puffins will still be there during your trip. I'd suggest looking for puffins during the other parts of your trip first at easily accessible points (Dyrholaey, Reykjavik, Ingólfshöfði - send a message to the tour company). If there are still some puffins at those places, you're sure to find them at Borgarfjörður eystri too. If you don't find them, I would suggest that you save yourself the trip all the way out there. Good luck and happy planning!
@@IcelandwithaView I have found a live web camera of the puffins at Borgarfjörður eystri, and was thinking of checking daily nearer my time of that visit to see if I can spot them. I do check it even now and they seem to appear at different times of the day. We are soloing our trip in a car, so we are our own masters in that respect. We ahve also set a whale spotting tour from Hauganes the day before, so hopefully everything will come to gather.
Thank you for great video! We are going to Iceland this summer on a cruise. Do you know any companies that do tours for cruise ship passengersnto see puffins? Thank you!!!
Hi Ketu! You're welcome! For whale watching, I recommend going up to Husavik (the world's best place to see whales) with Gentle Giants (gentlegiants.is/). Use my code (WHALESWITHAVIEW) for 10% off their GG1 or GG2 tours!
My wife and I will be making our 3rd trip to Iceland in a span of 1 year this coming July 10th. Last Year in July and October we saw a grand total of 1 puffin when we did a whale watch out of Reykjavik. This places you mention are great spots to see puffins in the summer but are they not all out at sea during the day? We went to one place in the South of Iceland and one in the East in July last year and didn't see a single puffin. Timing is everything. Can you speak to this? Thanks.
Bummer! I'm so sorry to hear about your bad luck! The puffins come and go out to see and back to their burrow/nest throughout the day but not necessarily all at once. Puffins migrate away from Iceland in August so I hope you have better luck this summer!
Hi Jennifer! I think you're chances are pretty good to see puffins, as long as you're going to a known puffin hot spot. And, as Icelander's say, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!" I hope you an amazing adventure!
I'm a bit surprised that Grimsey Island didn't get a mention... granted, it requires more planning and time for a puffin visit, but based on my visit there it is hard to beat for puffin photography and observing!
Great point, Gordon! This year Grimsey was the first place puffins were spotted but you're right, getting there is a bit more involved for most travelers.
We specifically went to Westmann Island to see puffins last late June. Didn't see one. Went all over the island, didn't book a boat...probably should have. It was an extremely windy day, I wonder if they were in their nests due to winds.
@@IcelandwithaView Oh, yes. Sorry, that comment sounded very negative. It was just my biggest regret from our trip. We loved our trip so much we are planning another. I'm sure the puffins will cooperate next time!
@@IcelandwithaView I did see them. In one hotel i got the advice to go to puffin island. It was 1,5 hout drive but there were plenty of them. I think ir was ur number 4
Its unlikely 😢. Even the guided tours stop puffin watching mid-August. I still recommend visiting the places covered in this video and maybe you'll get lucky!
We visited last year in June, Vestmannaeyjar and Latrabjarg is was amazing.
Thanks for sharing!
I went to the Westman islands and saw them so close. Was really cool, love those little guys.
They're so cute and I love how close you can get!
Ha. Látrabjarg reminds me of the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland too. Thanks for the video!
😍😍😍 Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for this info. I'm excited to see these cute puffins this summer!
You're welcome! Be sure to tag me in your Instagram stories so I can follow along on your trip!

Awesome! I hope you have a great time!
This is fabulous. Thank you so much. I love your energy and enthusiasm and I’m super excited to bring my family there this summer.

Yay! Puffins!! Will be hopefully seeing them on the east coast this summer...( and, no, I'm never going to eat them)...
Awesome! I hope you get to see them too!
Thanks a lot.
Very useful.
What about whale watching best place in Iceland

I can't say enough about Borgafjordur, it is puffin central and much easier to reach with less danger than some of the other sites.
💯 - so many good reasons to visit Borgarfjörður Eystri!
Also... Puffins are common carriers of the sea-bird tick, so if you touch one don't be surprised if you get a creepy crawly on you!
Ewww! Thanks for the tip!!
