    Hungarian Grandmaster (1950). He is considered to be one of the strongest chess players at the beginning of the twentieth century.
    Maroczy began to play chess at the age of 15, often playing with Rudolf Charousek. He studied engineering at Zurich Polytechnic. In 1895 on the recommendation of Emanuel Lasker, he played in the Hastings Amateur Championship where he took the first place and became a Master of the British Chess Federation. In 1896 he was second at Nuremberg, followed by S. Tarrash and Nelson Pillsbury behind Emanuel Lasker, and ninth at Budapest. He showed his best achievements in Vienna (1899-1900), Munich (1900), Monte Carlo (1902, 1904) Ostend (1905), Barmen (1905), and Vienna (1908), being first. In 1899 in London, he shared second place with David Janowski and Nelson Pillsbury, in 1900 in Paris he took third place behind Emanuel Lasker and Nelson Pillsbury, in 1903 at Monte Carlo he came in second place ahead of Nelson Pillsbury and Karl Schlechter, in 1907 at Carlsbad he performed as second also.
    During the period 1900-1908 he played 189 games and lost only 17. In the 1920s, he continued to take part in international chess events and he came first in Amsterdam in 1922, in Hastings in 1924, in Carlsbad in 1923, and in Budapest in 1932.
    His best result at the Olympiad was 9/12 points on the 1st board in London in 1927.
    He played 12 matches, e.g., in 1896 he defeated Rudolf Charousek with a score 7:3, and in 1921 he drew a match with Max Euwe 6:6.
    Before returning to Hungary in 1927, he lived in exile for seven years, first in the Netherlands, and then in England and USA.
    Several times he was awarded brilliancy prizes for the beauty of play.
    After World War II in 1946, he left for Amsterdam but reached only Vienna; even later he again had to come back to Budapest.

    This is the best presentation of the Maroczy bind I've seen...and the game , what a classic ! The analysis is done with such articulate grace and style. Please keep showcasing the dead legends as you bring them back to life with such pulsating vibrancy.

    It is written in Fischar's "My 60 memorable games", "Geza Maroczy left a strange legacy: the discovery that a certain type of Pawn formation imposes a near-decisive cramp on the opponent." This was essentially the positioning of a pawn on c4 by white in response to several varieties of the Sicilian Defence. This pawn was, it seemed, instrumental in imposing this cramp.

    Wow, Maroczy's attacking style takes balls. I think his opponent could have done something to blunt the attack, but he didnt. I doubt Maroczy would have succeeded in such an attack vs todays GMs.

    Brilliant. The game reminded me of another, lesser shown master, Rudolf Rezso Charousek, in whom Lasker saw WCS potential. Sadly Charousek died young from TB. But if memory serves he counted victories over all the GMs of his time: #suggestion ...

    5:17 Here if Qb6 one of bishops is goona drop no matter what white does. If C4 to protect the light square bishop then Bishop on D6 drops. white needs to play BxN+ then move the other bishop. Interesting game anyhow.

    The accent on the first syllable is always stressed in Hungarian: mArotsee. The garbage on top of the vowels are not accents but pronunciation indicators. But who knows, the name might be from another language, very common in Hungary.

  • @Plankeh
    @Plankeh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 6:44, what about black qe1 capturing the rook and checking. After white qe1, knight d7 to make room for the king? Just an idea I haven’t thought it out completely and I’m no chess expert obviously

    • @mozisi
      @mozisi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, then also it's losing completely, I guess. If Black plays QxR on e1, followed by white queen capturing on e1 , black knight has no safe square to go. d7 and e6 are both covered by the bishop and pawn respectively. As per your move order, black would be down a queen and a knight and that would be an easy win too. No point prolonging the game when you know you've already lost. I guess that explains. Let me know if I missed something :)

    • @Plankeh
      @Plankeh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes sense. Maybe making a miracle happen with the 2 rooks and the bishop. Highly unlikely though lol. Thanks for the reply
