    We were walking our Cavalier puppy about two miles, upped it recently to three and noticed that was too much for her. She will be one in April and now realize from your video we might have been walking her too far. Her energy level is so high especially at night when we come home from work and are tired ourselves! We have staggered work schedules and do come home/work from home as often as we can for our pup. She came from a breeder who had a very different schedule from ours and our pup is determined to keep that schedule it seems!

      Multiple short walks are better than one long walk, if you can do it.

      @@chaskat35 Hi! LOVE your videos. Thanks so much. What is a good short walk length? Something 1/2 mile 2-3 times a day? Or what do you recommend for an 18 month old? (This is Rowley from Spain!)

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For my older dogs, a suitable "short" walk would be something under a mile, taking about 30 minutes at a liesurely pace, and once a day is plenty. An 18 month old could keep up with you at a brisk walking pace for about as long as you feel comfortable yourself - maybe up to an hour.

    Absolutely love your videos. Find them very informative. My Cav turned one year yesterday. I have a question unrelated to exercise. I see your grass is nice and green. How do you prevent burn spots from their pee? My grass has taken a beating since I’ve had my girl. Any suggestions?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We never suffered brown spots from urine, but the wear and tear of multiple dogs going in and out killed grass in the high traffic areas. Almost 10 years ago, we bit the bullet and put in artificial turf. It cost thousands of dollars, but was a great investment for us. Excellent drainage, no odors, and easy to pick up poop from.

    Thank you very much for such informative videos. We have a 6 months old cavi who is obsessed with lights and shadows like a cat :). Runs and jumps trying to catch it. Have you experienced anything like this with your dogs?

      One of our Cavaliers - Hubbell - does that too. His mother didn't do it, and none of his puppies do either. Probably just some genetic/behavioral quirk. We just get a good laugh out of it.

    For younger dogs that require more exercise, I love flirt poles. Dogs love them, there's no training required (as there is for fetch), and the toy at the end of the "fishing line" keeps dogs' mouths safely away from human skin (including children's and elder's tender skin). I also love agility, but, likewise, am too old and feeble to do agility myself any more. My knees have said "no" to agility.

    Hi I love watching your videos. I have had 3 Cavaliers . I lost 2 to old age and now I have a 3yo Blenheim boy. Currently I feed him Sundays for Dogs. His coat was shiny when I feed him raw. What do you feed your dogs?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  ปีที่แล้ว

      We fed a raw diet years ago, but found lots of problems with it. Aside from the logistical problems, we found that our adult dogs could not maintain sufficient weight on the raw food. We did not notice any improvement in coat or general health on raw. We now use a good quality kibble for our adult dogs - currently Royal Canin, but there are other good brands available.

    My Cav's are great walkers, but are easily distracted. Other people, cars, squirrels, etc - they run after them. I wish I could take them in public places more. It would be nice to possibly see a video on your suggestions for distractions. What is Tag's treat dispenser called? I'd like to order a few.

    I let my cavaliers run free in my big garden several times a day. The youngest ones I let them play with a 🥎. My ruby cavalier killed all my chickens a few years ago so no more chickens 😭I feed them in their crates so I have control over the amount of food they need. My tricolor Ti Amo has diabetes he's 10 is very lazy but he needs a little bit of exercise too! When the weather is good the door to the garden stays open so they can go outside whenever they want.
    Thanks for showing your beautiful cavaliers. Have a great day Charlie hope in a month you have good news 🐾🐾👍🐕

      We had chickens a couple of years ago. One day, the gate to the pen was left unfastened; the Cavaliers got in and killed all but one of them. That one was placed in a home where they could provide the proper care, and needless to say, we have no more chickens, and we use store-bought eggs.

    Have you always lived in Long Island? How far is it from NY city?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was born in New York City, but we moved to Long Island when I was 3 1/2 years old. I’ve lived here ever since - in fact, my current home is only about 5-10 miles from our first LI home. We are about 35 miles from Manhattan; an hour by train, or by car if there’s no traffic (a rarity). It’s a wonderful, if expensive, place to live. Great beaches, lots of shopping and restaurants, and plenty of cultural resources. I absolutely love the city. We’ve been to two Broadway shows this year so far, and we have tickets for two more in the next couple of months. New York Philharmonic and American Ballet Theater also are favorites and easily within reach. Great medical care too - I’ve been treated successfully for cancer at Sloan Kettering, one of the finest cancer centers in the world, for the past two years. Can’t say enough good things about living here!
      PS - No kangaroos here either.

      As long as your pace is relaxed, and the weather is not extreme, a 7 month old should be able to handle an hour. But work up to it - start with 10 minutes, and work up gradually. Just remember that the dog's legs are much shorter than yours, so keep it slow.
