The reason why I appreciate Joel as a trainer is because he actually has trainer dogs. I can't remember how many times I called up trainers to find out they don't have trainer dogs (dogs that assist your dog's training). I believe a good trainer needs a trainer dog because there are some behaviours that can only be stimulated or stopped by a trainer dog.
I’m sure my friends get tired of me always saying, “A tired dog is a good dog.” But I truly believe it’s the secret to my dog’s totally chill attitude.
Yep My exhibits bad behavior like leash pulling and showing aggression towards others, but as his energy wears, he chills out and starts sticking by my side
...instead of throwing the ball 50times in row....let the dog sit, throw the ball into high grass...let the dog do some turns and steps, so he forgets the exact direction you threw the ball....let the dog search its beloved ball...that way your dog is likely to be calm and stimulated mentally and physically within 20 minutes...you will be amazed how the intensity of searching by nose easily tires your dog much more than walking it for an hour.
This mixed methods approach is EXACTLY what works with my Aussie! He needs freedom to sprint and roughhouse with other dogs, if I go 2 consecutive days without the dog park (rain, etc) he starts to get real wired and nutty. On the off days I bring him along to run errands and I can see how happy and adjusted he is when I’m consistent. This is real stuff Joel is talking about here! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Joel, you talk a lot which is a good thing in your case because everything you say is gold. There is no fluff. You provide so much observation, detail and explanation. You don't miss anything and you explain things thoroughly with your clients. I have learned so much.
My pit bull Nikki was a fetcher, she’d go for hours and she loved fetching with sticks so I would throw them into a huge brush pile we had behind our house and she’d root around and fine the exact stick I threw. She never came out with a different stick, had to be that one. Had the exercise with running and mental stimulation in finding the stick amongst all the others. And me being a kid was so AMAZED that she could find the right one! 😆
Really clever, you used that to train her in scentwork, that sounds so similar to the training strategies used to train search and rescue or police scent work.
My dog always finds the same stick too. I just say Daisy where's your stick and it's always the same one and I have a ton of sticks cause I have a dead fall pile that I keep along my fence line
Reminds me of a terrier at a place I worked years ago. We would pick up a small rock from a long rock driveway and throw it way down the drive and with all of those stones the dog would find the right one EVERY time!
Dude your spot on. I have 2 husky puppies that are currently 8 months; they get tired at the dog park with in 1-2 hours vs going on a 3-4 hour walk. As soon as I come back from the dog park they knock out and wake up the next day 😂💕
This dog is my dog's spirt twin. Wide open nutter! My dog's world changed when i started taking her to day care. I don't like dog parks, but at day care there are minders who call down too much nuttiness. Seriously it changed our lives. Day care 3 days a week. Pack walks, 4 miles, daily. Neighborhood play group weekly. She is in heaven and we can all live together!
Getting a GSD puppy in less then 2 months, been watching as much of Joel’s content as possible. The man is a straight shooter, no sugar coating or b.s.
Playing with other dogs is what my Rottie needs!! Covid regulations made that dog play time so difficult in the Netherlands when she was a puppy. Now she is an adolescent and just wants this.
I feel for this lady. When your dog is reactive and not good on a lead, its really difficult to take them outside to work off energy because they are really hard work. And you dont trust the dog. Or your own skills to manage them. So pleased for the pooch (and owner) - look how happy she is running around at Joel’s place

That Shepard was a perfect match for that athlete , this guy knows dogs at the highest level. When the Shepard and other dog ramped up, prince walked confidently and bumped them in between. What an amazing animal and trainer .
My chihuahua does that exact jump on other dogs! Also she runs like the wind. She loves to play with big dogs. Outruns most of them, and if they are too rough she will find a safe spot, like the edge of the water or under a bush and wait till they calm down. Smart dog. Little but fierce! 😁🌷. Yes, my chiweener could run like the wind. I used to bring her, for morale, to cross country practice when we did track sprints. She could lap us like nobody's business, with her tail on a spring💖
I hope you’re not tired of hearing from me, but every word of this is pure gold. And fun fact, that GSD looks just like my 85 pound ball of crazy. I will say one other tip. I focused on dog socializing too much, and not enough on people/kids. I’m playing catch up with that. But he’s a sweet boy!!!
I am so fortunate to have a 130 acre park in my town (Ventura) with off leash time 6-9AM. Every morning for over 2 years, rain or shine or wind, I've been there letting my dog run. He's a male pitbull and we met 3 GSDs (all girls) and we do a route up the grassy area and run to a big vacant parking lot; 1 1/2 miles. He doesn't do well with group play with a bunch of strange dogs so we head home after 7. The 4 dogs wrestle, run, chase, look for birds etc. He is CHILL for the rest of the day! At night we walk the neighborhood for another mile! So important!

@j frank we lived in Ventura for 3 years and Arroyo Verde was my FAVORITE place! We moved away in 2019 for a job. If we lived there I would gladly meet up.
Even though I walk and play with my dog twice a day, whenever I start up my truck my boi gets so excited to go on an adventure and sticks his head out the window the whole time even if his face gets totally covered in snow! This video has given me a better perspective as to why. Thanks Joel.
Cool watching prince chiil them both out multiple times so it does not escalate beyond play and into bullying, and check in on her like a boss. The shepherd backed down multiple times without conflict.
Ppl ask me constantly y my elderly dog is always happy and has energy of a (stable) puppy/skip in his step....easy mental & Physical stimulation. Walks everyday but always coupled with an engaging game on his own & with other dogs. Love & known boundaries. That's it.
Just got an American lab puppy, and man did i go over again and again wether i can really provide the excercise this type of dog needs. Really wish people would do the same before buying a dog,slide would be better for owner and dog.
My Corso pup started off as a bodyslam specialist and was obnoxious and challenging when corrected by us in the house. We couldn't trust her behaviour . I was absolutely dreading her growing up. I thought she would be a disaster and need to have a restricted life -I can't physically hold her if she wants to go. Now she's 9 months I'm stunned. She's respectful of dogs and people, she checks in with us and has a fairly solid recall. I find her a breeze to take anywhere - dog parks, beaches. I think a lot of it was she just matured, we also did plenty of playing and training (not enough walking). Always following through calmly is the biggest thing I learned from good trainers like Beckman's. I expect her to get more protective and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't tip over into anti social. It's a huge thing to have a dog companion without stress and it's my greatest ambition with my dog. We are not there yet, I won't know for another 6 months or so.
That dog definitely has springs in her paws, the way she jumps is crazy. I can see a dog like this on one of those ESPN shows where the dog runs and jumps in the water to catch the frisbee.

I Have a 2 year old White German shepherd and he has so much Energy!!! When I take him to the park for an hour he's Such a calmer and chiller dog all dogs need to get all that energy and Stress out We need to really put ourselves in there position!!! My dog is so different when we leave the park.

Not craziness just boredom, frustration and excess energy. I raise Mini Aussies. They need to burn off steam, mental steam, physical steam. Know what kind of dog or mix you have and plan activities accordingly.
When my dog was still with me( he past away 3.01.22) , we made at least 5miles in forest with many dogs, now I take dogs in to "babysit" them and we go to forest everyday with sometimes 4 dogs, and owners are amezed after they get their dog back! Also I work in vetclinic and you don't wanna know how often we hear that, my dog has a big yard.... No they won't move there, it's like us in the house, couch - kitchen - couch ....and they don't know why they dog are overweight and out of control.

My dog ozzy has shown the same type of agility. I give him hurdles to jump over during his zoomies and play. Tought under, over, and jump so I can mix it up and he can exert more energy. During the summer I carry a kiddy pool in my truck... To give him a fun chill break at the park...its amazing what a couple gallons of water can do to keep your dog cool and stimulated and ready to play more safely.
Thank you for explaining in detail how much exercise is needed for a high energy dog. I have the same issue, where walking 3-4 miles doesn't seem to be enough. Will incorporate more dog playing and other activities to stimulate her brain. Great stuff. 👍
hanging with extended family for a week, kids running around, babys crying, 7+ adults generally ignoring my dog, complete shift in behaviour and expectations. She wasn't problematic per say before, but still a significant shift in attitude and behaviour. Doubled the next occasion we had to all hang around. Diversifying experience for your dog comes back with so many benefits everytime. I know this, yet it still amazes me everytime I see a new shift.

Thank you for the work you do Joel and putting it out on yt raw & real. Though I've worked with dogs for my whole life, I now have a working dog & they aren't my wheel house. I saw something in this dog that I have seen in mine. My dog has a complex set of issues that only occasionally rear their ugly head, and this gave me the puzzle piece I didn't know I needed when he gets squirrely. Thank you 😉

My dog is an exact match in spirit and physical build to this dog! Even in the way she plays. I’ve been trying to figure out mental stimulation for mine. Walks, dog parks, toy fetching, interacting…still has boundless energy. If I could afford it and didn’t live far away - I’d be there with my restless rescue. Okay, after watching whole series, this def helps!!! Will start tomorrow!
I have the Boxer girl version of this dog, but now almost 4 years old. Doggy day care 2-3 times a week drains her down to reasonable energy, and I should be taking her to the large dog park a couple times a week as well. The athletic ones are so fun to watch! Really cool to have that dog at the dog park.
I feel like agility would be a brilliant added exercise for this dog, physical exercise, and learning new things, she's just so nutty 💜 Can't wait to see how she handles this :)

Got a sibirian husky 8 months ago, think 99% of what Ive learned is from you, no dog classes, no friend who knows it all, just youtube which is 99% you. Oh and I should add, my husky is fucking amazing in every single way, calm yet playful and 0-100 as soon as I release him on command. All of this is because of you so THANK you for that! i am doing our training right! Yay! We checked ALL the categories according to this video. I take her with me to tons of public spaces as my SD. Total mental stimulation for BOTH of us actually. She needs ALL of it. And tug toys.
Great Video, I take both my German Shepards to parks and they play on the Jungle Gym and love the slides. They also have their own backpacks and carry their own food, water, and treats. I also let them run in fields next to the levee system.

My dog (working line Dutch herder) loves chasing a laser pointer. It's the only time that he runs at full speed for 10-15 minutes. He will chase and fetch his ball for hours. I can see a real difference between the 2 exercises. But no matter what I try he doesn't like other dogs apart from one, a Frenchy male. I've been trying for 3 years.
@@andrichristodoulou5305 he is a retriever mix I adopted. Yes, it helps him calm down when we walk. I tested him on a few walks without his vest and he was back to being hyper but it wasn’t as bad because I think the reinforcement he got from the vest training.
I’m surprised you’ve not suggested playing tug. For me this is the single biggest key to bonding with, and properly exercising your dog, both mentally and physically especially if you do it outside where there are other distractions
I have a 16 year old medium size terrier mix. About her size. He is an athlete just like her. Same energy, its crazy. He always got looooots of exercise since the day I got him. Mentally and physically he is still pretty fit, but has a sensitive/weak lower back, so he is too scared to play with other dogs now. If he does try, he always gets hurt. But he just does not feel old. He still has this crazy energy and wants to play and I can tell he is very frustrated and has pinned up energy. We still go on multiple long walks every day, and I do different search games with him, which he loves, but it is just impossible to get him physically and mentally tired. I would give all just to have him play and run around with other dogs and have that big ol smile on his face, just one more time....
Identical springer pointer/border collie mix to dog I have. Spooky how similar they look. Identical behavioural issues have been experienced. They're crazy energetic dogs and need a lot of varied exercise. Not for the faint-hearted. My dog is nearly 7 and is still a bit crazy but nothing like when I got her. Very satisfying to exhaust her.
I have a two fold thing to bring. I am a trainer in KC. AND I have a fearful dog. You addressed what I have been telling clients... the dog needs EXERCISE , full out play is great. Thank you for sharing ideas.(especially on the dog daycare and the time restriction there) Now, fear.. I'm talking extreme fear , I'm talking a dog that would become afraid and run away.. all training goes out the window. What would you recommend me to do in the this situation. I think the dog play is great there needs to be a confined area so he can't run away... ideas?
I got a lot out of this video. I did not know that sometimes dogs with pent up energy will shake. Shaking is not always fear. This is news to me. Helps me understand my Australian Kelpie/Blue Heeler Mix. My pup is like Superman. Faster than a speeding bullet. Leaps tall buildings in a single bound! She is a rescue. Only had her 4 months now. I have been trying to walk her 2-4 miles everyday.I try to change the route often. I take her to my loft complex's dog run when there are no other dogs twice a day so she can run hard. She loves the herding ball, Chuck It and Flirty Pole. I am trying to get her used to being around other dogs but the progress is slow. She came from an environment where she was being attacked by another dog in the household from the time she was adopted at 9 months until I adopted her at 2 1/2 years old. But she gets along really nicely with my 3 cats. There were no cats in her life until now. She is great with people too! I hope that eventually she will not be afraid of other dogs. She likes to watch them in a big dog park nearby but on walks she is still reactive if a dog is within 10 feet of us. Your videos are helping me learn how to stay calm and handle her the proper way for corrections. Thanks!

SO nice to get confirmation that we are on the right track with our very athletic english setter. He actually manages to play outside all day chasing birds( we are not hunters, which is very unfortunate for him), outrun a whippet ( almost managed to match the speed but has three times the endurance) at the dog park and play with us before finally crashing!. The only thing we haven't managed to do on a regular daily basis is walking him, but he goes everyday to the dog park where he meets a lot of fun and not so fun characters. Now it is a question of managing to go walk everyday and crushing recall, it is still not there.
The value a dog places, in a good workout, is underestimated or misunderstood by the majority of dog owners. Meeting your dogs physical/mental needs is how you "dominate" them. Coupled with consistent training/direction/leadership is how you become the alpha.
I have a 2 yo GSP and she is the definition of high energy (she climbed a tree the other day, ran down and caught a deer) She forced us to rethink how we exercise her and it benefited her greatly and has reinvigorated our 10yo boxer as well. The key is novelty, no two days are the same and always finding new places to explore. A tired dog is a well behaved dog and while I don’t do training in the same fashion, they learn so much from you while walking with you and other dogs. We exercise for about 4 hours in the winter and 6 in the summer per day (off leash) We visit numerous parks and no day is ever the same. She will swim next to the kayak all day. If I had to only do one thing during the day with the dogs and I didn’t have hours, walking her (even on leash) somewhere she has never been is best. Even better than running at the dog park. The boxer too. It’s not just about the physical part.
I wanted a gsp so bad because they just look so awesome but Idid tons of research before I got a dog and in the end I decided that I just dont have the time or energy myself to properly stimulate a gsp . Ended up going with an olde english bulldogge, great choice
If owners are scared of going to a dog park, they just need to realize that when you're there and for how long is totally up to you. If you go and it loads up with dogs, just leave. If there's a dog that you don't trust just leave. You can always come back. Certain times will always be busier and other times will have few or no other dogs usually. So going to a dog park is not just going to a dog park, there's a lot of control within the nuttiness.

Ive found a combination of several things is best. My dog gets walked constantly and played fetch with. And when the weather is cooperating, I take him on hikes. And we have now started adding play dates with other dogs. It took a while to be able to put all these things together, he had to grow up enough. We had to get the right set up and meet people that we could invite to play in out back yard . It's not easy to make it all happen. But boy, when he is getting the right amount of stimulating exercise for his body and brain, it shows! And we are just coming out of the winter in the northeast, so it is really not easy to make it all happen. But I do at least know what he needs
My dogs playing outside for about 5-10 min in general helps them calm down. I even use lick mats/ snuffle box. It’s easy to say that dogs need to meet and play with other dogs but it’s REALLY not. And im talking about owning a large breed of dog and not a tiny one you can just put in your purse/ stroller & sneak inside a mall. Prove me wrong.

Hi Joel - I've got a 1.5 year old wolfhound mix that we got from a shelter. He is similar to the dog in this video. He needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation but he is reactive to other dogs. We're working on his reactivity but is there a way to provide mental stimulation in the meantime?
I know this is an old video, so you may not see this comment. This dog is so much our 3-month-old puppy. He can go and go and go. The 5 minute per month walk rule I saw online did not cut it for this guy, so he's been going much longer. At what age would you recommend allowing a puppy of this age to go be with other dogs to let loose? As his primary person, he's often snapping at me as he has this wild energy that he can't release.
Hi Joel, I notice this dog has a weird halter and you didn't have her on a gentle leader. Is that halter more effective than the traditional type? Is there a reason you didn't use the gentle leader?
When I first started taking my dog as a puppy in the car she was fearful, when she would relax I gave her a treat, slowly she got past it. Car rides are no problem now.

Dogs always know which stick you had! Everytime you grab/hold something, You leave your scent on it.

That Shepard was a perfect match for that athlete , this guy knows dogs at the highest level. When the Shepard and other dog ramped up, prince walked confidently and bumped them in between. What an amazing animal and trainer .
My chihuahua does that exact jump on other dogs! Also she runs like the wind. She loves to play with big dogs. Outruns most of them, and if they are too rough she will find a safe spot, like the edge of the water or under a bush and wait till they calm down. Smart dog. Little but fierce! 😁🌷. Yes, my chiweener could run like the wind. I used to bring her, for morale, to cross country practice when we did track sprints. She could lap us like nobody's business, with her tail on a spring💖
I hope you’re not tired of hearing from me, but every word of this is pure gold. And fun fact, that GSD looks just like my 85 pound ball of crazy. I will say one other tip. I focused on dog socializing too much, and not enough on people/kids. I’m playing catch up with that. But he’s a sweet boy!!!
I am so fortunate to have a 130 acre park in my town (Ventura) with off leash time 6-9AM. Every morning for over 2 years, rain or shine or wind, I've been there letting my dog run. He's a male pitbull and we met 3 GSDs (all girls) and we do a route up the grassy area and run to a big vacant parking lot; 1 1/2 miles. He doesn't do well with group play with a bunch of strange dogs so we head home after 7. The 4 dogs wrestle, run, chase, look for birds etc. He is CHILL for the rest of the day! At night we walk the neighborhood for another mile! So important!

@j frank we lived in Ventura for 3 years and Arroyo Verde was my FAVORITE place! We moved away in 2019 for a job.
If we lived there I would gladly meet up.
Even though I walk and play with my dog twice a day, whenever I start up my truck my boi gets so excited to go on an adventure and sticks his head out the window the whole time even if his face gets totally covered in snow! This video has given me a better perspective as to why. Thanks Joel.

Cool watching prince chiil them both out multiple times so it does not escalate beyond play and into bullying, and check in on her like a boss. The shepherd backed down multiple times without conflict.
Ppl ask me constantly y my elderly dog is always happy and has energy of a (stable) puppy/skip in his step....easy mental & Physical stimulation. Walks everyday but always coupled with an engaging game on his own & with other dogs. Love & known boundaries. That's it.
The GSD is soooo beautiful, the little one the cutest ever and Prince is just fantastic. ❤
Just got an American lab puppy, and man did i go over again and again wether i can really provide the excercise this type of dog needs. Really wish people would do the same before buying a dog,slide would be better for owner and dog.
My Corso pup started off as a bodyslam specialist and was obnoxious and challenging when corrected by us in the house. We couldn't trust her behaviour . I was absolutely dreading her growing up. I thought she would be a disaster and need to have a restricted life -I can't physically hold her if she wants to go. Now she's 9 months I'm stunned. She's respectful of dogs and people, she checks in with us and has a fairly solid recall. I find her a breeze to take anywhere - dog parks, beaches. I think a lot of it was she just matured, we also did plenty of playing and training (not enough walking). Always following through calmly is the biggest thing I learned from good trainers like Beckman's. I expect her to get more protective and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't tip over into anti social. It's a huge thing to have a dog companion without stress and it's my greatest ambition with my dog. We are not there yet, I won't know for another 6 months or so.
That dog definitely has springs in her paws, the way she jumps is crazy. I can see a dog like this on one of those ESPN shows where the dog runs and jumps in the water to catch the frisbee.

My new shelter pup (guessing APBT) is like what the heck lady?! 🤣 Loose leash training, some sit, stay, etc. We’re both enjoying it though. I really think he can be a breed/shelter ambassador. Thanks Joel!
I Have a 2 year old White German shepherd and he has so much Energy!!! When I take him to the park for an hour he's Such a calmer and chiller dog all dogs need to get all that energy and Stress out We need to really put ourselves in there position!!! My dog is so different when we leave the park.

Not craziness just boredom, frustration and excess energy. I raise Mini Aussies. They need to burn off steam, mental steam, physical steam. Know what kind of dog or mix you have and plan activities accordingly.
When my dog was still with me( he past away 3.01.22) , we made at least 5miles in forest with many dogs, now I take dogs in to "babysit" them and we go to forest everyday with sometimes 4 dogs, and owners are amezed after they get their dog back! Also I work in vetclinic and you don't wanna know how often we hear that, my dog has a big yard.... No they won't move there, it's like us in the house, couch - kitchen - couch ....and they don't know why they dog are overweight and out of control.

Amazing change from yesterday's behavior.
My dog ozzy has shown the same type of agility. I give him hurdles to jump over during his zoomies and play. Tought under, over, and jump so I can mix it up and he can exert more energy. During the summer I carry a kiddy pool in my truck... To give him a fun chill break at the park...its amazing what a couple gallons of water can do to keep your dog cool and stimulated and ready to play more safely.

Thank you for explaining in detail how much exercise is needed for a high energy dog. I have the same issue, where walking 3-4 miles doesn't seem to be enough. Will incorporate more dog playing and other activities to stimulate her brain. Great stuff. 👍

hanging with extended family for a week, kids running around, babys crying, 7+ adults generally ignoring my dog, complete shift in behaviour and expectations. She wasn't problematic per say before, but still a significant shift in attitude and behaviour. Doubled the next occasion we had to all hang around. Diversifying experience for your dog comes back with so many benefits everytime. I know this, yet it still amazes me everytime I see a new shift.
A tired dog is a good dog! (I.e A properly exercised dog is a well behaved dog)

Thank you for the work you do Joel and putting it out on yt raw & real. Though I've worked with dogs for my whole life, I now have a working dog & they aren't my wheel house. I saw something in this dog that I have seen in mine. My dog has a complex set of issues that only occasionally rear their ugly head, and this gave me the puzzle piece I didn't know I needed when he gets squirrely. Thank you 😉

💯 I have my athletic dog in doggy daycare she goes a few times a week just for the stimulation. She is a different dog the evening and days following.
My dog is an exact match in spirit and physical build to this dog! Even in the way she plays. I’ve been trying to figure out mental stimulation for mine. Walks, dog parks, toy fetching, interacting…still has boundless energy. If I could afford it and didn’t live far away - I’d be there with my restless rescue. Okay, after watching whole series, this def helps!!! Will start tomorrow!
I have the Boxer girl version of this dog, but now almost 4 years old. Doggy day care 2-3 times a week drains her down to reasonable energy, and I should be taking her to the large dog park a couple times a week as well. The athletic ones are so fun to watch! Really cool to have that dog at the dog park.

Got a sibirian husky 8 months ago, think 99% of what Ive learned is from you, no dog classes, no friend who knows it all, just youtube which is 99% you.
Oh and I should add, my husky is fucking amazing in every single way, calm yet playful and 0-100 as soon as I release him on command. All of this is because of you so THANK you for that!

i am doing our training right! Yay! We checked ALL the categories according to this video. I take her with me to tons of public spaces as my SD. Total mental stimulation for BOTH of us actually. She needs ALL of it. And tug toys.
Great Video, I take both my German Shepards to parks and they play on the Jungle Gym and love the slides. They also have their own backpacks and carry their own food, water, and treats. I also let them run in fields next to the levee system.

My dog (working line Dutch herder) loves chasing a laser pointer. It's the only time that he runs at full speed for 10-15 minutes. He will chase and fetch his ball for hours. I can see a real difference between the 2 exercises.
But no matter what I try he doesn't like other dogs apart from one, a Frenchy male. I've been trying for 3 years.
I have a vest I put on my boy and he gets to hold all the water in the walk. He thinks he is the secret service carrying all the special water lol
What kind of dog do you have?? Does it help on walks?
@@andrichristodoulou5305 he is a retriever mix I adopted. Yes, it helps him calm down when we walk. I tested him on a few walks without his vest and he was back to being hyper but it wasn’t as bad because I think the reinforcement he got from the vest training.

I’m surprised you’ve not suggested playing tug. For me this is the single biggest key to bonding with, and properly exercising your dog, both mentally and physically especially if you do it outside where there are other distractions

I have a 16 year old medium size terrier mix. About her size. He is an athlete just like her. Same energy, its crazy. He always got looooots of exercise since the day I got him. Mentally and physically he is still pretty fit, but has a sensitive/weak lower back, so he is too scared to play with other dogs now. If he does try, he always gets hurt. But he just does not feel old. He still has this crazy energy and wants to play and I can tell he is very frustrated and has pinned up energy. We still go on multiple long walks every day, and I do different search games with him, which he loves, but it is just impossible to get him physically and mentally tired. I would give all just to have him play and run around with other dogs and have that big ol smile on his face, just one more time....
Identical springer pointer/border collie mix to dog I have. Spooky how similar they look. Identical behavioural issues have been experienced. They're crazy energetic dogs and need a lot of varied exercise. Not for the faint-hearted. My dog is nearly 7 and is still a bit crazy but nothing like when I got her. Very satisfying to exhaust her.

You addressed what I have been telling clients... the dog needs EXERCISE , full out play is great. Thank you for sharing ideas.(especially on the dog daycare and the time restriction there) Now, fear.. I'm talking extreme fear , I'm talking a dog that would become afraid and run away.. all training goes out the window. What would you recommend me to do in the this situation. I think the dog play is great there needs to be a confined area so he can't run away... ideas?
I got a lot out of this video. I did not know that sometimes dogs with pent up energy will shake. Shaking is not always fear. This is news to me. Helps me understand my Australian Kelpie/Blue Heeler Mix. My pup is like Superman. Faster than a speeding bullet. Leaps tall buildings in a single bound! She is a rescue. Only had her 4 months now. I have been trying to walk her 2-4 miles everyday.I try to change the route often. I take her to my loft complex's dog run when there are no other dogs twice a day so she can run hard. She loves the herding ball, Chuck It and Flirty Pole. I am trying to get her used to being around other dogs but the progress is slow. She came from an environment where she was being attacked by another dog in the household from the time she was adopted at 9 months until I adopted her at 2 1/2 years old. But she gets along really nicely with my 3 cats. There were no cats in her life until now. She is great with people too! I hope that eventually she will not be afraid of other dogs. She likes to watch them in a big dog park nearby but on walks she is still reactive if a dog is within 10 feet of us. Your videos are helping me learn how to stay calm and handle her the proper way for corrections. Thanks!

SO nice to get confirmation that we are on the right track with our very athletic english setter. He actually manages to play outside all day chasing birds( we are not hunters, which is very unfortunate for him), outrun a whippet ( almost managed to match the speed but has three times the endurance) at the dog park and play with us before finally crashing!. The only thing we haven't managed to do on a regular daily basis is walking him, but he goes everyday to the dog park where he meets a lot of fun and not so fun characters. Now it is a question of managing to go walk everyday and crushing recall, it is still not there.
The value a dog places, in a good workout, is underestimated or misunderstood by the majority of dog owners. Meeting your dogs physical/mental needs is how you "dominate" them. Coupled with consistent training/direction/leadership is how you become the alpha.
Hello sir great video as always I just want to make a question how much the fear period lasts? I mean from what month to what month?
I have a 2 yo GSP and she is the definition of high energy (she climbed a tree the other day, ran down and caught a deer) She forced us to rethink how we exercise her and it benefited her greatly and has reinvigorated our 10yo boxer as well. The key is novelty, no two days are the same and always finding new places to explore.
A tired dog is a well behaved dog and while I don’t do training in the same fashion, they learn so much from you while walking with you and other dogs. We exercise for about 4 hours in the winter and 6 in the summer per day (off leash) We visit numerous parks and no day is ever the same. She will swim next to the kayak all day.
If I had to only do one thing during the day with the dogs and I didn’t have hours, walking her (even on leash) somewhere she has never been is best. Even better than running at the dog park. The boxer too. It’s not just about the physical part.
I wanted a gsp so bad because they just look so awesome but Idid tons of research before I got a dog and in the end I decided that I just dont have the time or energy myself to properly stimulate a gsp . Ended up going with an olde english bulldogge, great choice
If owners are scared of going to a dog park, they just need to realize that when you're there and for how long is totally up to you. If you go and it loads up with dogs, just leave. If there's a dog that you don't trust just leave. You can always come back. Certain times will always be busier and other times will have few or no other dogs usually. So going to a dog park is not just going to a dog park, there's a lot of control within the nuttiness.

Hi Joel, after exercise, dog needs discipline and consistency in guidance and or rules. Keep up the good work.
Ive found a combination of several things is best. My dog gets walked constantly and played fetch with. And when the weather is cooperating, I take him on hikes. And we have now started adding play dates with other dogs. It took a while to be able to put all these things together, he had to grow up enough. We had to get the right set up and meet people that we could invite to play in out back yard . It's not easy to make it all happen. But boy, when he is getting the right amount of stimulating exercise for his body and brain, it shows! And we are just coming out of the winter in the northeast, so it is really not easy to make it all happen. But I do at least know what he needs

My dogs playing outside for about 5-10 min in general helps them calm down. I even use lick mats/ snuffle box. It’s easy to say that dogs need to meet and play with other dogs but it’s REALLY not. And im talking about owning a large breed of dog and not a tiny one you can just put in your purse/ stroller & sneak inside a mall. Prove me wrong.

Hi Joel - I've got a 1.5 year old wolfhound mix that we got from a shelter. He is similar to the dog in this video. He needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation but he is reactive to other dogs. We're working on his reactivity but is there a way to provide mental stimulation in the meantime?

This dog is so much our 3-month-old puppy. He can go and go and go. The 5 minute per month walk rule I saw online did not cut it for this guy, so he's been going much longer. At what age would you recommend allowing a puppy of this age to go be with other dogs to let loose? As his primary person, he's often snapping at me as he has this wild energy that he can't release.
So similar to my Brittany dog, I'd be surprised if she wasn't a Brittany cross. Thanks for the content and for showcasing what dogs like this need.
Hi Joel, I notice this dog has a weird halter and you didn't have her on a gentle leader. Is that halter more effective than the traditional type? Is there a reason you didn't use the gentle leader?
When I first started taking my dog as a puppy in the car she was fearful, when she would relax I gave her a treat, slowly she got past it. Car rides are no problem now.
