You know why that kahawai tasted good smoked? it's bcoz it's a river kahawai. I could tell by the colour of the meat when you filleted it. When kahawai come up the river mouth from the ocean they go through a transformation change in taste, and colour of the meat is a bit whiter. But if you were to fry it, you will notice the difference straight away bcoz it won't taste like a sea kahawai, it will taste a bit like a river fish.

That must be a record size kahawai for the river mate. I haven’t fished there for years but never caught one that size.
Thats the first one i caught there at the jetty and the biggest fish 🐠 i got in the whole of poverty bay lol, apart from the shark in January 😝😝😝

With all the silt we have had flowing down our rivers, it must have a impact on the seabed, and an impact on fish numbers. 40 years ago when Watties Canneries were in Gisborne the floor sweepings used to flow into this river 20 meters away and as kids we jagged for the herrings that schooled after the floor sweeping of pea's , sweetcorn and diced carrot. Kahawai, came after the herring's and the odd Kingfish was caught.

Kia Ora, kahawai is definitely such a underrated fish aye it's so nice Raw and more..I remember as a kid 30 years ago fishing on that ol Warf catching spottys and what not lol..
Never caught a Kahawai though.
Growing up in This country we are so lucky to have the ability to catch fish or get some shellfish,
