    I visited the revenue department of PIA to get a refund of my web ticket to Toronto. While the refund was being processed, I asked for mobile phone charger from 3 different employees as a favor who didn't had a charger so I moved on. Then I saw a 4th PIA employee having charger cable plugged into his computer. When I asked that employee if I can charge my phone. He rejected my request in taunting manner. When I told him not to taunt like that, he stood up as if to attack me. I grabbed his collar to defend myself. Suddenly almost 25 other PIA employees started beating me. They tried to snatch my documents and my passport barely survived the snatching attempt. Then they took me to supervisor's room and slapped me there in presence of the supervisor to which the supervisor objected but the supervisor kept trying to convince me that I was wrong and tried to alter the details of the interaction but I refused to admit their version so they gave up and asked security to walk me out of the building. Security staff told me that they are also upset with the PIA staff and encouraged me to submit an incident report, which I did. I know for a fact that nothing will change and no action will be taken. I'm only bringing the complaint on record to warn other passengers to take extreme caution for their own safety when dealing with PIA.
    Incident Date: Jan 06, 2021
    Incident Time: 03:00 PM
    Incident Location: Inside PIA Revenue office building near old Karachi Airport Off Star gate

      the problem and the solution is not as easy as Mr Taimur claimed in this video. I can totally understand, what really happened with you. It is because of wadera culture of Pakistan. In karachi PIA departments, more and more incompetent Sindhi people have been hired for years and now they are eating PIA like rats. So, such kind of behaviour from employees from any government sector is normal, even in private sector one can encounter such incidents. The problem is very deep rooted in our system but there is a solution and if solution employed then it may take couple of decades to show the output. All we can do is invest in the upcoming generation at primary school level.

    Taimur sb with all due respect I have myself worked in PIA for 10 years (1994 till 2004) and know the problems that PIA is facing. I don’t think I agree with your assessment regarding PIA that restricting the open-skies and allowing it to expand would fulfil PIA’s dream. There’s a lot of issues with PIA including but not limited to over-employment, lack of professionalism/expertise etc. in almost all the departments of the airline. Then the government’s action to point out the irregularities in pilot’s program was the last nail in the coffin of PIA that banned it from flying to Europe. So just restricting the open-skies policy wouldn’t be of any good to PIA. Such restrictive policies wouldn’t have any practical effect on the fate of PIA imho. I think (for a long time now) that PIA is a gone case and the govt should let it fall instead of keep putting money into it but I understand that it may be difficult for them to do it politically. So that’s why we’re continually going down the drain like we’re in most of the other domains.

    • @codingCouncil
      @codingCouncil ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hmm. Indeed you would be having better visibility on the issues of PIA because you worked there , however looking at what taimur sb was saying , what killed the profitability of PIA was the open skies agreement .
      And then perhaps one thing led to the other in sort of a domino styled effect , and here we are decades later in a state of near total failure .
      Don't you think if the policy which kick started the demise of the institution , is removed ; that it would have beneficial effects? . Perhaps the issues you point out are also in one way or another , related to the lack of money PIA has because of open skies .
      For example as you point out , lack of professionalism . Maybe we can also regard this as a consequence of the fact that PIA just didn't have enough money to hire experts to guide the staff to professional etiquettes

    • @hamoodalam
      @hamoodalam ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@codingCouncil Open skies doesn’t kill the profitability but rather encourages you to maximise your profits by doing the same work in a much more efficient manner. You can’t stay in the past always and have to move ahead with changing times like all other airlines are doing. If we keep living in the past as a country or as an airline and keep expecting that our customers would also continue to do so then I believe this is where we will end up.

    Great speech sir. Can you please share pre 1990 profit/loss reports from PIA. Also was PIA a tier 2 airline when it was created or it become tier 2 post 1992? When you pointed out the outsourcing does not reflect profitability, does that also imply that it is less efficient as well. We have seen the safety history of PIA as well. Probably the most accidents by any international airline per fleet size. Most safest airline are those whose services are outsources because a company designed for a certain function will strive for better results. Certainly outsource or privatisation is not the only/complete solution but with the current model, PIA is not going forward even if the Open Sky policy changes.

I went through your channel and found two videos (series) on Economic Crisis, Role of Banks and Modern Monetary Theory. I couldn't find the third part of the series.
    Kindly explain how Pakistan can use MMT to achieve economic progress especially when we are not a monetary sovereign government (as per the criteria laid by Stephanie Kelton in her book The Deficiti Myth) with almost $130 billion in external debt. Please also focus on how would we able to manage the exchange rate depreciation given the rise in aggregate demand through fiscal stimulus would automatically lead to higher imports of raw materials and machinery. And what are the ways in which we can raise money to finance these foreign exchange outflows?

That is the only way to make national and loss making organizations profitable.

    Great insights, Professor sb. However, you need to back your claim that outsourcing does not enhance productivity and profitability with more studies. We see outsourcing in many industries (the software industry is at the top), and there is a need to investigate its holistic impact scientifically. For example, when we say that PIA's productivity/profit went down from the 90s, we need to see if there are confounding variables (e.g., corruption) hampering the performance

    • @Taimur_Laal

      Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment. I think even for the aviation industry, there is a need to quote more studies. There will likely be many more studies on this topic. How many of them reached that conclusion (outsourcing had negatively impacted the industry)? What were these studies' quality (the quality of their research methodologies)? Dr. Sb! This is just an academic debate and I am an academic.

    If open skies policy was the main reason than why Shaheen and AIrblue captured PIA market share? These airlines are also Pakistani airlines and started long after PIA.
    People didn’t shifted to other airlines because of open skies policy. Ask anyone who doesn’t prefer PIA over other airline not even a single person would say that open skies policy was the reason why they prefer other airlines. If PIA would have provided better quality and services at a good price why would anyone prefer any other Airline where they have to pay more money and wait hours for connecting flights.
    People moved to Emirates and other airlines because of better services and peace of mind.

    I get your reasoning here from a business perspective your case makes sense. But Pakistan is a very unique scenario. I interned at PIA, the guys hired there are lazy and may be not even qualified; most of those guys were gifted jobs from PPP basically political hiring (ppp did the same thing with Sui gas get people hired when they come in power). Hence there may be a need to weed out the useless guys and rehire appropriate qualified staff.
    I worked at KE after it got privatized, even though the new management are totally profit oriented and screw over the general public to make that profit but there was a general labour force issue there as well- at the management side we had alot of engineers etc who were not qualified but hired beacuse they spoke a certain language. The labour guys as well , the drivers etc all were corrupt and didn't really function like a workforce is supposed too. The entire old workforce management plus labour were involved in corrupt practices, Bribery and were political hooligans (you could not give them orders to have something done or they would literally beat you up or worse even kill you)
    So I get your general perspective about labour and unions etc, but what's the solution when an organization has had decades of corruption and incompetent political hiring? Doesn't that mandate a workforce restructure with qualified people?

    Professor , I appreciate your effort but I belive firmly that you misled people by giving false analogies and let me explain what are the real issues regarding the PIA and all likes public sector organizations in Pakistan as I too was one of the employee in a public sector organization.
    1. Employees in public sector organizations are actually very lazy, inefficient, ill-trained and I would say ill-mannered also , so for example if there is a need of one employee in a public sector organization , Goverment hires on the average 5 people on that slot because of politics and cronyism and that is the case in PIA, Railways and Steel Mills and I would suggest you to please conduct a survey and see how many relatives an average person has in a public sector organization and believe me you will bang your head on door several times.
    2. Almost 100% of the Airline industries over the world earn their income from tourism and that is why Airlines in Thailand , Malaysia and Turkey offer many packages to their customers . For example , Many of such airlines give you on arrival VISA and cheaper hotel rates and many more packages. So, tourism is a key to the revenue of Air travel , So what you think based on Pakistan profile , where a day is not passed that you do no hear some news of suicide bomb blast and other terror related activities in Pakistan. Do you really think people will come to Paksitan for toursim and I will recommend you to read story on the "Nanga Parbat Massacre" by Taliban where a dozen tourists were mercilessly killed by Taliban . If we cannot give even security to foreigners who want to spend like 5000 USD to come to visit Northern Areas of Pakistan then who will ever think of coming to Pakistan in the first place let alone giving foreigners some entertainment.
    3. World has now a strong reservations on the standards of Pakistani pilots and their training because a recent explosive news about the fake licenses of Pakistani pilots did a very bad job in hurting the reputations of Pakistani pilots and Pakistani Airlines. Many countries in Europe cancelled the license of PIA and even banned PIA from flying to their airports sir.
    4. Quality and maintenance services of Pakistani Airlines is also a big question mark and now even the local Pakistanis DONOT want to travel using the PIA and I assure you 100% if there are two options of travelling using a PIA cheaper rates and any other International airlines which is a bit expensive then even Pakistanis will prefer International airlines due to safey and reliability issues. Sir PIA is not even reliable as many times they cancel their flights and people have even lost their luggages after using PIA .
    5. The attitude of the PIA staff is also rude many a times, I have seen staff poorly clothed, fat airhostess aunties , beard airhostess men with big bellies , torn off seats of PIA , poor management of the passengers' luggage and many times believe me fragile things in the luggage gets either broken are or secretly stolen by the employees because they have master keys of various bags. So even the luggage of the passengers is not safe on Pakistani Airports sir. Lastly, the food offered by the PIA on the flight is also very bad, it somes times give smells , sometimes too cold to eat , people have seen rats and cockroaches inside the PIA planes and most importantly sir many a times the Air Conditioning of the PIA planes gets broken sometimes and there are videos on youtube sir that you can watch.
    I am deeply disappointed by your dishonest and poor analysis Dr. Taimur as I thought you always give priority to reason and faithfil analysis over blind faith and propoganda. So please , next time correct yourself and research well on this topic sir.

    You criticized Indian government for bailing out debts and selling Indian Airlines & Air India to TATA (which originally used to belong to TATA though) & asking Pakistani government to do EXATLY the same with PIA!
    If I can afford Emirate ticket and choose for Air India in the same price, I will expect the service equivalent. Now, they are providing. People are using.
    Or else you need to inculcate nationalism in such a level among the citizen when one statement against PM resulting a nose dive of tourism in Maldives. Tour operators stopped, individuals cancelled tickets, airlines made full refund after two derogatory tweets from Maldivian MP / Minister. Can you?
    Isn't it high time to give away India obsession of Pakistani intellectuals, administration? Think Pakistan. Be Pakistani. Make PIA profitable.

    in short your socialist solution is that there should be no competition. so that PIA can offer nothing and don't need to improve its service but can earn profit. If People are using emirates or qatar airways and not using PIA then it means they have more to offer than PIA. Why PIA failed to compete with rest of airlines this is a big question. I totally disagree with your analysis. You are just saying that ban all airlines so that PIA can earn profit. Dear Prof, this is not how it works. PIA needs to improve its service and compete with rest.and for ur kind info, air india also failed despite of their restricting open sky policy, why because they have same poor governance structure like pak.
