I have seen a great many glass knapping vids on the tube...you are the first to mention how to support the blank in your hand to avoid breakage. Good video.
Easier to find than a copper nail is large gauge copper ground wire. Sometimes there is quite a bit extra attached to the ground rod outside your house, usually directly under your meter in the ground. I've found anywhere from a couple inches, enough for one pressure flakes, to a foot or more, enough for quite a few pressure flakers.
I love your videos. I had a hard time after moving to state with no forageable chert continuing my knapping hobby without buying stone. Which I feel defeats the purpose to a large extent. I watched many others channels but I truely learned how to ajust my skills from chert to glass from you. Thank you and keep the awesome content coming!
Have you tried the water technique? If you put water in the glass a quarter of the way full and pop the top with a rubber mallet, you can get a pretty perfect break every time. A cavitation bubble causes the glass to break.
@@javiervalenzuela8284 The tricks of the trade that you learn when you're young. who would have thought all these years later we would use the same technique for flintknapping.
Bravo! I learn something every time I watch your videos. Today it was about bending and not too much pressure. Also liked hearing the fan in the background; blow away that (bad for the lungs) silica dust!
I always fill the beer bottle half way up with water, then hit the top with wood or something soft. This makes the bottom pop out perfectly with no small shards.
hello Greg I really like your videos... they're amazing! when I grow up, I want to chip arrowhead just like you! :) Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! greetings from Brazil
They don't have to be that sharp. I used to think that too. I've seen pressure flaker tips as sharp as your finger that people used to make excellent pieces.
Indiana in 1816 became a state, although from Indianapolis north was still Indian area. Found blue glass flakes in old Potawatomi Indian village sites and a couple of thumb scrapers.
I got a pile of old drink bottles that have a thick bottom and I have several old Clorox bottles too you are welcome to them if you want i even have a pile of broken bottles that have a really thick bottom on them as well
a single year of flintknapping. thats how long ive been doing flintknapping. today i came to my closest to an arrowhead. still broke it tho, i dont have a pad of leather so instead i use a old used mouse pad.
B&M Outdoors check out my other videos if you want to do primitive (antler) but it's not great on bottles because the glass is very brittle and slippery compared to stone

gregpryorhomestead I also find it useful to do over a bucket with water to catch the water and glass that comes out. Safe and easy. Though that nail trick is a lot easier
If you're mean enough use the palm of your hand put water in it grab the neck of the bottle and hit the top with your hand I could do it when I was a teenager

You are far more instructive than other videos......the heart of a teacher!
You have probably the best tutorial on knapping, thank you!
^^This^^
Even your knuckles have savage beards!
You are one of my top 3 knappers…..thanks for doing these for us.....your teaching is at the very top.
Another great way to support it is to always be there when it needs you.

I learned this as an old drinking trick, except we use the palm of our hands

I learned if you put a penny in an empty bottle and shake it up real good, you can easily break a bottle on your head.
That's what I do!
So satisfying, love this
Great upload, really interesting , informative and awesome.

It's amazing that humans figured how to do this multiple thousand of years ago
I was just thinking about that like how did they figure this shit out on there own when I'm having trouble learning it through tutorials
Damions LiftedLife There’s a reason the technology took millions of years to develop to its peak.
Nice arrowhead
I need to start drinking more. 😀
Very cool

Great video!
I'm just gonna say, the beard caught me off guard. Either way though, great video!
Sick beard

you look already grown up in your picture man
Zenmaster6 probably when he retires
Did this in college all the time, after the weekends you have an unlimited supply of glass bottles, Yingling bottles are the most brittle lol
Would something like an awl for leather working work? Or is that too thin?
I think I'll try it with a Jack Daniels bottle since those are perfectly rectangular.
I love your video
Thanks for sharing your time and talent! KANSAS
For using glass to make arrowheads I recommend using an old television screen
That BEARD THO
Yow I need this man's beard
Whiskey bottle is the best? I keep trying with my empties but doesn't seem to work, is the plastic too soft, hehe.
What kind of copper tip are you using in your ishi stick? The one I have seems to be to soft, I have to sharpen way too often!

Always wash your Bottles Before you knap it!
Isn’t that a pressure flaker? I was under the impression that an Ishi stick was about two feet long and used for indirect percussion.
you can use a penny to get the bottom of the bottle. just spin it in the bottle until it comes off
en el rancho alegre vulgarmente le llamamos obsiguama...fierrro pariente
Is using glass a good alternative for flint for beginners?
Yes. Obsidian is generally the most sought after rock for knapping. It's just volcanic glass is all it is.
Old TV screens and monitors work good as the glass is really thick so YOU have to thin it down, just like a natural spall of Obsidian/flint.
Im using this just in case

Keep at it brother.
What's the benefit of copper, as opposed to other metals?
It's softer won't shatter the glass as easy
It bends to the shape of the platform so it will grip better, making for a cleaner break.
I pay more for the whole set you knoe
Ishi liked to use wine bottles
How do you do the zig zag if your piece is perfectly flat and perpendicular the nail just slips of
Grind it a lot! With a piece of coarse grindstone or a rough rock...hell, a brick would work to scuff it up. Good luck!
@@gregpryorhomesteadok i'll do that thanks
Does this neo-caveman thing have a name? Like using modern trash type materials for tools and weapons?
I buy the bud ice 40s
I don't understand! How come no one wears gloves?!
Went to comeback
The 41 dislikes drinks beer from milk bottles
Im just gonna use a piece of antler, would that be possible? Im new to this.
B&M Outdoors antler is possible but a lot more difficult.
gregpryorhomestead okay thank you, i think ill just make an ichi stick.
B&M Outdoors check out my other videos if you want to do primitive (antler) but it's not great on bottles because the glass is very brittle and slippery compared to stone
gregpryorhomestead thank you for the help. There is a big source of old bottles by my house. Im gonna try to do folding glass knives after a while.
gregpryorhomestead did you know you can also fill the bottles 1/4 full with water and hit the top with a mallet to break it.
I get out where these old trash piles where and look for old bottles
Isn't it illegal to make Arrowheads out of glass!??!
It depends
Thats really amazing... Can i kill my neighbor with that???? Lol...
Dats a joint not cigg
Yeah like you'd know
Glass shards and slivers? No thanks ...
2:58 fail!!
Don't even bother trying it is impossible
Or you're just an idiot that can't knap anything.
