Cheers to you good sir. I love watching folks that have honed their skills over the years to the point of true mastercraft display their talents unabashedly. Its not about pride or attention whoring (all though the web is certainly RIFE with that as well). This is pure artisanship. People displaying the fruits of their labor to show others what they too can acheive if they can sew dedication into their passion. This is what humans do. It's how we evolved. We work and work to create something and perfect that thing, then we pass that knowledge along to the world. I have absolutely ZERO interest in watching commentators putting their critiques on things they can't do themselves. They aren't contributing to the craft, they arent helping to build anything other than their own "brand". We need more videos like this. To me, this is the whole reason for having internet. Keep em coming man. Keep on doing what ur doing.
@GulfCoastKnapping I have to agree, keep at it. The old saying practice makes perfect probably originated regarding flint knapping. I'm not familiar with that type of quartzite, we have some various grades of this here in Kentucky I've found in the creeks. Some is really nice, no cracks or flaws and some is simply un-knappable. Good work there on that piece.
Hey brother I have enjoyed every single video of yours. You are an awesome mapper in my opinion. I was listening to you about the comments and about wasting the flakes. Lol it so funny to me how other people try to tell others how to use someone else’s material. I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t just leave a positive praise about your work. I’m like you I paid for the material so I will do what I please with MY flakes. I’m sure you don’t waste them. I just dislike negative comments. Awesome work and awesome video as well man awesome video
I’m glad you agree😂 I think most people do. However there’s always someone it seems who likes to point it out. Thank you for the comment, so glad you’re enjoying these videos. I have another video filmed that I’ll post on Monday👍🏼
August 19th, Moundville, Al will have what is called a Saturday in the Park. Guy Medder from Mississippi will be demonstrating flint knapping from 1100 to 11400. There will also be several other knappers there, you're welcome to join us and we'd be happy to see you.
Damn that was fast. What does the guy get that material? Do you have his contact info? Is it heat treated? I was amazed how you attacked that square edge.
VERY skillful knapping. Wow. You said that sometimes you reference different artifact books. How does this Clovis compare in size with an actual artifact from the book?
For the Deep South (lower Alabama lower Georgia and Florida) the one I made is a bit oversized. But there are some large examples like this, just very few
@@longbowbanjoAL I’m not well-skilled in bow-making, nor in shaft-making. But I’m hoping to learn sometime soon. I guess I could let someone else create it for me, but I’d prefer doing it all myself. I’m stubborn in other words lol
@@GulfCoastKnapping lol i mainly used rivercane. theres just so much of it around here and it works great. bows however can be made of many woods. theres a saying, boys make bows men make arrows
@@longbowbanjoAL I hear rivercane is the thing to use. There are some patches of it down where I live, can easily grab some. And with bows I lack a ton of knowledge lol, but I’m sure I could throw something decent together
Is it possible to make an arrowhead out of some of the bigger pieces that came off that rock? Or does it take a rock that size to make just one arrowhead?
Do you ever start out making one type of point and end up with something different because of mistakes, unpredictable material, operator errors and such?
For this video I didn’t have a reference, just a point shape in my head that I wanted to go for. But sometimes I’ll use a “best of the best” artifact book and that helps alot
I love these fast knaps. I bet a lot of stone tools were made on the fly for survival and not laboured over for perfection.
I agree!
That was amazingly easy looking. YOU’RE THE MAN!!!!!!!! That blew my mind to knock that out in 20 mins! Definitely not easy at all!!!!!!!!!!
Well thank you! Appreciate that a lot
I woulda been at that for hours to get to that stage
Really impressive work for such a short time span.
Thank you so much!
Awesome job Jake "Ross"
Thanks friend!
Cheers to you good sir.

I’ll be up in TN the 18th - 24th in August. Is it always around that time of year?
I wished I was that fast. Good work brother. Be safe watch your six Gene Gorringe Mi 💛 💙 🇺🇲 GO BLUE
Thanks Gene!
Have you done a video
On Clovis points and the difference between the other
Types of points ?
Sorry I didn't watch sooner! I was out banging rocks at the knap in today!
That’s okay! Wish I could’ve joined you
Hey I looked up Johnathon Johnson and all I found was a preacher in Thomasville. Older guy.
Look up “Jonathan Johnson”
Damn that was fast. What does the guy get that material? Do you have his contact info? Is it heat treated? I was amazed how you attacked that square edge.
Look up Jonathan Johnson on facebook! It doesn’t need heat treating
Are you ever up near Wetumpka ? What’s the best way to get started in knapping? Recommend any starter kits?
Check out the website: flintknappingsupplies.com they have some great starter kits
I am but not very often at all

Can you do a video just in setting up platforms. How you do it. It would be greatly appreciated!!
I need 3 of those
Haha if you really do, email me At GulfCoastKnapping@gmail.com
Tools-down 20 minute challenge: complete!
MADMAN!!
😂
I see you rub the edge of the stone sometimes what is that about and what does it accomplish? Love the shirt Roll Tide.
Strengths the edge to produce a clean flake. Roll tide
What do you use for sharpening in between breaking it?
Abraider
you ever hunt with any of your work?
I haven’t, but that would be a cool thing to do👍🏼
@@GulfCoastKnapping whats keeping you from it?

are you using a traditional method or a modern one? Sounds like metal
Damn fast looks great keep up the great work be safe Gene Gorringe Mi 👍 ✌️ 🪨 🇺🇲
Thanks Gene!
How do you find Jonathan Jonson? I had a farm in Choctaw Al and I would love to have a few pounds
I find him on Facebook, just search his name in the search bar or in the flintknapping groups👍🏼
Is it possible to make an arrowhead out of some of the bigger pieces that came off that rock? Or does it take a rock that size to make just one arrowhead?
Oh you can make multiple off a piece like this👍🏼
Have you ever used Pitkin Chert?
I havent
@@GulfCoastKnapping I have plenty if you want a little bit.
Do you ever start out making one type of point and end up with something different because of mistakes, unpredictable material, operator errors and such?
Oh alllllll the time
Is this heat treated?
Raw
What do you use as refere

Is Tallahatta the sharpest of all ?
When it cuts you it sure feels like it
Please, I'd like to purchase some of that
Would you share his information
20 minute bolen point!
Oh boy lol might just do this!
Go Jake
Thanks man!
😂 who needs lapidary saws when you can slab like that ..😮😂
😂
Do you have any real ones? Dang i bet youd get more subs if you somehow integrated the techniques of paleo knapping
Just got a fresh load if anyone is interested in some
Sorry but that was not fun I would have loved to see you take your time
I got it😂
