A look at early Sikh traditions

  • Have you ever wondered why there are so many different forms of practicing Sikhi today? Many Jathebandia, sampardas, ideologies, rehit-maryadas, and schools of thought exist and it can be quite difficult to make sense of it all. Where did they all stem from? What are the true origins of the Nihangs, SGPC, Damdami Taksal, Nanaksar, the Akhand Kirtani Jatha and other Sants and Deras?
    Which strand of Sikh thought most fits your world view?
    This episode explores the Sikh landscape of the 18th century, and maps the most significant strands and consequential bodies which existed amongst the Khalsa and the Khulasaa, during the height of Sikh rule.
    We will be covering all of the schismatic groups which broke away from Khalsa norms, including the Jit-malias and the Bandai Khalsa. We will also be covering true origins of the early sects including the Akali-Nihangs, Gianis, Guru-lineages (of the Bedis and the Sodhis), Nanakpanthis, Nirmalas, Sevapanthis, Udasis, and Dhirmalia’s.
    Our narrative and exploration of each sect will be interwoven with a newly created map of the Sikh universe, and we will compare modern denominations with historical philosophies and practices.

    There is so much diversity and nuance in our rich Sikh history that seems to get overlooked these days, thank you for spending your time to dig up and bring to light such a vibrant tapestry of the Sikh tradition. We really need to understand our past evolution if we are to improve our future as a Panth today.

    Brilliant video. I have made a few poor attempts over the years to categorize all sampardas, jathebandis, traditions, into one chart, you have done so very well! I find the modern academic historiography to be different than traditional Sikh claims (Damdami Taksal, Budha Dal, etc. claim lineage back to Guru Gobind Singh ji). If I am honest, although the facts may align more with this modern scholarly view, I am partial towards the traditional claims.

    Really respect the work and research you're doing. Akaal sahai.
    One thing I noted which isn’t clear is the separation of the Kuka/Namdhari as originally Khalsa and then relegated to an offshoot. From Giani Gian Singh’s account and other sources we see that many didn’t recognise the Kuka Singhs as Sikh to begin with by sending Hukamname out that all Namdhari’s read a Muslim Kalam and are not Sikh which is refuted by a later reply sent from Rangoon and by Giani Giaan Singh Jis account in their Panth Prakash first edition, in later editions most of the original 28 Kabits about the Namdhari Panth are removed.

    Firstly a huge credit goes to this bhai sahib for creating this educational video, although there are some things which are not correct or need to be checked properly however majority of the things mentioned are quite significant and valuable.
    What I have learnt after watching this video is that none of the Sikhs, groups or jathebandiyaa actually followed the actual teaching of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, everyone tried to start their own cult whether it's been Udaasi, Nirmale and others and implemented their own teaching or code of conducts. And still today, there are so many deras, groups and organisations in India who still don't actually follow what Guru Granth Sahib Ji' says, they only follow what their sampardayi jithebandiyaa wants them to do or what their predecessor did!

    • @x-s6002
      @x-s6002 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is not what I took away from this video. Take a step back and look at it in a wider context. It appears for whatever reason groups and schools of thought have existed as long as Sikhi itself has existed. Guru Ram Das appears to have maintained good relations with Bab Siri Chand even though they are doing something completely different that what was Gurmat. It's like what Giani Sant Singh Maskeen said- give 100 ppl Gurbani and you will have 100 interpretations of Sikhi. Maybe the Gurus knew that schisms are inevitable so instead they create the Khalsa to help find compromises and maintain some degree of unity. These groups are an amalgamation of popular interpretation, traditions and histroy. I personally do not accept any group that claims they are correct AND claims others are wrong. Its more of this interpretation of is better than this etc.

    • @BhupinderSingh-eb3qv
      @BhupinderSingh-eb3qv 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@x-s6002 I think this is where we lose our focus when instead of concentrating on specific things we ignore them and look at the wider contexts. Wider contexts are not useful if it has no relevance! Anyone is welcome in Guru's place whether if it Sri Chand or Akbar! It doesn't make Sri Chand or Akabar bigger or lesser if they have maintained good relations! Now the majority of the stories that we hear today are from Suraj Parakash Granth and I am sure if you are interested in Sikh philosophy and history you might have read them! There is a lot of false written about guru ji's personalties and characters and yet sikhs instead of questioning it the authenticity of the writer's work we just bow down and listen to it!
      Now regarding Maskeen ji, of course, he was a great katha vachak but this doesn't mean whatever he said is 100% correct and you should believe it, as you have mentioned Maskeen ji I am sure you have heard his katha's and in his katha's Maskeen ji mentioned several times that during my katha there souls (Aatmas) who come and listen to my katha, no one can see them only I can! Is this a gurmaat or manmaat?
      The groups or jathebandiyaa are useless if they are not preaching what the Guru ji has said, not what the jathebandiyaan's babe have said! When they forget the Guru's teaching, then they start to implement their own teachings or code of conduct! That's why today each jathebandiya has thier own code of conduct, no one likes to follow each other's code of conduct! I am sure you know, none of the jatheybandiyaa likes each other, they just say, our jahebandi is started from this guru, guru gave our jathebandi the mission to preach sikhism etc etc!! You can see for yourself that, all of so-called jathebandiyaa are RSS puppets whether its Damdami Taksal or whatever the other jathebandiyaa! You can search the images of their leaders on google.
      This is why I think you should not look at the wider context, always look at what's right and wrong! I never said this video is 100% wrong, I said there is good stuff and some of the stuff needs to be checked thoroughly! I hope it makes sense! dhanwaad!! 🙏

    • @x-s6002
      @x-s6002 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@BhupinderSingh-eb3qv The Maskeen ji quote was to explain why your statement of "true" teachings of Gurbani is meaningless. You have misunderstood and assume I was using him as a figure of authority. You keep saying that various groups are not true to Guru Granth Sahib. Someone can just as easily make that argument about you and whatever you think is true. Can you give a specific example of what "they" got wrong and you got right? If someone said I refuse to eat butter on bread because Gurbani says it will cause pain is that a correct interpretation? Who is to say, and who get to decide? Groups are just manifestations of popular interpretations of this religion.
      The belief that Suraj Prakash has portrayed the Gurus personalities incorrectly is a wildly subjective statement. That text is not 100% correct sure, but the fact that it was received with honors at the Akal Takht and became so popular and remains so popular speaks for itself. That text was not created by Kavi ji in some dark corner of a basement. It took 10 years to create referencing many sources. If the Singhs at that time did not understand the Gurus personalities then no one does-especially not someone from this era so far removed. If you say you can understand via Gurbani- then you are simply making tautological augment again. And as I have said before, that is completely up to the persons reading interpretation. Some better than others. If I asked you specifically to read Gurbani and create a document explaining the Guru's personality-have you not created then your own suraj prakash? Why would your version be correct?
      If you interpret a Sikh concept 1 way and 10 agree with you and 10 don't. What then? A pseudo group has essentially formed here. As I was saying before, Guru Gobind Singh understood this to be an inevitable aspect of religion so he create the Khalsa to maintain unity and find compromises. Why did the Guru shun 5 groups but essentially remain neutral on others? Subgroups in a religion is inevitable.
      You come across as someone who thinks they have the answers while everyone else is wrong. I don't think you realize you are doing what you complain about. You are a few steps away from making your own group yourself. None of these groups are 100% correct, nor do they have the right to gatekeep sikhi. I disagree with taksal and nihungs more than I agree with them, but to call them cults would be completely off base.

    • @BhupinderSingh-eb3qv
      @BhupinderSingh-eb3qv 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@x-s6002 Bhai Sahib ji you gave an example of Maskeen ji and I told you what he preached and wanted to inform you what he said! Yes, I agree with what you have said by giving the example earlier quoting maskieen ji that, if you give 100 ppl gurbani they will interpret it differently according to their knowledge. Yes, that is correct if they don't know the meaning of the Gurbani they are reading and only understand it through "Akhri Arth". For example the first line of Jap ji Sahib "Soche Soch na Hovayi, Je Soche Lakh vaar", now many scholars have translated this differently according to their knowledge, for example, some people have said this means "by thinking, he cannot be reduced to thought, even by thinking hundreds of thousands of time" (this is akhri arth) however the actual meaning of this shabad is "cleaning the body by taking thousands of baths does not clean the mind from the filth of evil thoughts". Everyone will have their own understanding of Gurbani depending on their knowledge because they are not following the grammar of Gurbani or how it's written!
      Now, I have not said I am 100% correct and I have specifically received the true wisdom, but what I am saying is that I have the knowledge to read and see what is right and what is wrong. You have asked me to tell you what is "they" got wrong! Have you read the SGGS from Taksal? read it and compare it with the actual Damhdhami Saroop you will see that Taksali Saroop has many different errors and there are many changes they have made Now if you know there are mistakes and if I am pointing out how I am wrong and "they" are correct!
      Yes, I agree with your statement that "if someone says I won't eat butter as it will cause pain because Gurbani says" is incorrect thinking, and possibly they are reading or understanding this through Akhri arth like I have given the example earlier! There are multiple groups which they don't want to follow or listen the what the guru ji is saying and they are more influenced by deras, udaasis and other so-called sampradas! For example, taksal says in their books Guru Nanak is from Hindu God Ram's bloodline, Nanaksar has added kachi rachnwaa's in today gutkas, Udaasiyaan does their own rituals influenced by Hinduism, Nirankaris don't even have SGGS in their so-called temple, now what is the point of the having these so-called groups if they are only preaching their own stuff instead of not preaching what the guru ji says?
      It doesn't matter if Suraj Paraksh is approved by Akhal Takhth Sahib is highly valuable or if it should be respected at the highest level. Mahants took over the majority of the gurdwaras when Sikhs used to live in jungles, and because mahants used to follow Udaasiyaan Maryada of course they will approve what suits their code of conduct. Even today, you can see that decisions that come from Akhal takhts are coming from Akal Dal, all the jathedaar's of Akal takth today are puppets of Akali dal, and Akali dal leaders Sukhveer singh is a puppet of RSS, I'm sure you can see pictures of Sukhveer and Parkash badal with RSS members and in RSS meetings. And I'm sure you know what does RSS wants and what they want to achieve, they already are saying sikhs are hindu and these so-called jathedaar and akali dal says nothing! They only follow whatever order comes from their RSS guru's! There is a lot of stuff in Suraj Parkash that is incorrect and bad, it provides false stories of all the guru sahibs and also targets gurus characters! I am sure which ever translation you read, whether it's bhai vir singh ji translation or some other writer's they write the same thing that is written in suraj parkash! Now I am not saying you should believe whatever I am saying, you are more than welcome to read the suraj paraksh and make your own decisions! That's what I said earlier, I am not saying I am 100% correct, I just know how to read Punjabi and Gurmukhi and make decisions on what's written, that's all!!!
      Sorry, I am not able to understand what you are saying regarding Guru Ji making compromises and shunning 5 groups. What 5 groups and what have they compromised? I don't think a guru can compromise in any situation, guru says it directly, if you like then good if you don't then it's your choice, it's like take it or leave it! but it cannot be compromised! There is Guru Angad Sahib ji Salok which says, "but one who feels good only when good is done for him and feels bad when things go badly. Do not call him a lover, he trades only for his own account" (ang:474). There are no compromises here if you want to walk in the guru's path you can't compromise!
      Again, I am not saying I am 100% correct, again I can read and understand hence I have told you whatever I felt like! Now if you don't agree with it, then that is fine, I don't have any problems with that! Yes, I don't agree with the majority of the things of Taksal, Nihangs, Nirankariye, Namdhariye, Missinaraies, udaasiye, AKJ and so-called other groups are there! Because they are not following what Guru Ji is saying, they just want to implement their own code of conduct!
      Hahaha, I don't want to start my group, I don't have any alliances! I already have my alliance and that is with the one supreme lord "Some form alliances with friends, children and siblings. Some form alliances with in-laws and relatives. Some form alliances with chiefs and leaders for their own selfish motives. My alliance is with the lord, who is pervading everywhere. I have formed my alliance with the lord, the lord is my only support. Other than the lord, I have no other faction or alliance" (Guru Ramdas ji, Ang 366).
      Dhanwaad! 🙏

      Firstly a huge credit goes to this bhai sahib for creating this education video, although there are some things which are not correct or need to be checked properly however majority of the things mentioned are quite significant and valuable.
      I think at 45:20 bhai sahib ji says Damdami Taksal and Nanaksar were "off-shoots" of Nirmale! This clearly suggests they were not originally created by Guru Gobind Ji! As mentioned in the video, the role of Nirmales has always been to distort the actual way of living according to Guru Granth Sahib Ji and implement their own code of conduct influenced by Hindu traditions etc! If you are interested you can read the older scripture of Damdami Taksal, you can see they have used the term "Bhindra-Mehta Dera" and the term Damdami Taksal was used after 1970 I think and then it grew more After Baba Jarnail Singh Bhindrawala!
And still today, there are so many deras, and groups and organisation in India who still doesn't actually follow what Guru Granth Sahib Ji' says, they only follow what their sampardayi jithebandiyaa wants them to do or what their predecessor did!

  • @dasmeshdadaas
    @dasmeshdadaas 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Very well researched and presented. However there are some huge flaws which makes much of the information presented irrelevant.
    The main problem is that since the “winners” write history, much of the history available today is heavily biased. For example, Baba Banda Singh Bahadhur Ji was the only general (jathedhaar) that Guru Gobind Singh Ji personally assigned to all of Khalsa. How did the jathedhaar that Guru sahib himself chose end up in the hands of Mughals? Did Guru sahib ji choose wrong? To even think as such is blasphemy. What happened then is what has happened again and again in history - there were “Singhs” that opposed him and joined with Mughal forces. When these “singhs” (more like traitors) chose to oppose Baba Ji and stood up infront of him, Baba Ji had 2 choices. Either he could fight his own brothers, or he could turn back. Being the Bramhgyani gursikh he was, he knew when Singh’s fight amongst themselves it hurts both parties immensely. The physical loss is obvious but there is also much spiritual loss. He chose not to fight his own brothers which gave the Mughals the upper hand.
    Now back to the point I was making - if we look at what is written about his rule and how he wanted to become “Guru” himself and all other accusations against him, it is essential to note that this was all written by the traitors who betrayed him and the panth in the first place. This can be applied to many of the “facts” presented in this video.
    Another issue is the observations made by non sikhs although often true, are always without context. Without the understanding of traditions and the intentions/reasoning behind it, a lot of what they’ve written can be very misleading.

      If you had read gurbani and had a basic understanding you could never have said what you did.
      “Gur parmeshar eko jaan”. I have no desire to argue with nastiks. My point was for fellow sikhs who have an interest and commitment towards sikhi.

    • @dasmeshdadaas
      @dasmeshdadaas 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@MrHsingh93 much of the info available about that “schism” is also written by the so called “tat Khalsa” against the “bandai Khalsa” and is severely biased. Anyone with some basic understanding of gurmat principles can determine that. Just look at what they’ve wrote - to initiate the “bandai Khalsa” back into sikhi since they “lost”, they were forced to eat “soor di taree” (soup of pig meat). Even the sikhs who are in favour of eating meat wouldn’t eat that let alone those who rightfully oppose it.
