Sikhism and British Colonialism
In the late 19th century, prominent commentators speculated that Sikhism was in terminal decline and would soon belong to history. Almost 50 years later the Sikhs emerged with a revived zeal and went on to become a powerful socio-political force in Punjab. What really was the Sikh chapter in the story of the British Raj? Did Sikhs maintain loyalty to the British crown, or did they fight against it? And how did Sikhs engage with Hindus, Muslims, secular Indian nationalists and British officials?
In this episode, we will be looking at this ‘middle period’ of colonial history from 1873 to 1919, which saw a radical transformation of Sikh thought. As society transitioned from feudalism to democracy, new ideologies and institutions gained popularity amongst the Punjabi masses. This was a period when the modern Sikh identity had begun to crystallise and different organisations and leaders competed to become the new guardians and ideological gatekeepers of the faith.
This documentary will also detail how major events in British-Indian history impacted Sikh leadership and politics in the Punjab. The events include: the Bubonic Plague, the Morley Minto Reforms, the First World War, the Komagata Maru incident, the Swadeshi Movement, and the Jalliahwallah Bagh Massacre.
This episode builds upon the Lahore Singh Sabha's triumph by examining the make up of Sikh leadership at the beginning of the 20th century, from the loyalist Sundar Singh Majithia and later the more radical Teja Singh Bhasaur and Master Tara Singh. We will also be looking at the power and the influence of prominent aristocrats like Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha and also the Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh.
We also cover the dominant Sikh institutions of this period, by looking at the Chief Khalsa Diwan, the Panch Khalsa Diwan, and how they have left their mark on modern Sikh theology. This includes the origins of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha, and more missionary schools of Sikh theology.
We detail the rise of Punjabi and Sikh political radicalism, with the Ghadar Movement and the Central Sikh League, and how they interacted with the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League.

The Damdami Taksal (Jatha Bhindra-Mehta) has emerged as one of the most popular orders within modern day Sikhi, holding significant ideological, socio-political and cultural sway all over the world. The institution became a household name in Punjab by the time of Operation Blue Star (1984) and today many Amritdhari Sikhs in both India and the west adhere to the Rehit Maryada of the Damdami Taks...

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different forms of practicing Sikhi today? Many Jathebandia, sampardas, ideologies, rehit-maryadas, and schools of thought exist and it can be quite difficult to make sense of it all. Where did they all stem from? What are the true origins of the Nihangs, SGPC, Damdami Taksal, Nanaksar, the Akhand Kirtani Jatha and other Sants and Deras? Which strand...

Making of the Modern Sikh Identity: The Rise of the Singh Sabha Movement in Colonial Punjab
มุมมอง 16K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
The colonial apparatus of the British Raj, unleashed a whirl of social pressures which changed the way we interpret religious identity in the Indian subcontinent. This gave rise to sociopolitical reform movements like the Aarya Samaj, the Ahmadhiyas and a vast array of different Singh Sabhas. This documentary narrates the eventual triumph of the Lahore Singh Sabha ( the Tat Khalsa). It examines...

Your video provided a clarity on how modern Sikh identity came to be, but also provided crucial information how for the sake of modern Sikh identity other Sikh sect was excluded from Panth , imagine the reach of Sikhism if we were all together as Guru Nanak ji visioned.

This analytical approach is similar to that Which writers such as Kushwant Singh. It seems to lack the reverence which many Sikhs have and It's not without it's salting of opinion bias which we already have plenty of examples which may be present in varying proportions in this work here. Would be complete if this aspect could be left out. Also should certainly say before finalising any documentary on the DDT or Khalsa Brindrawalé why not go and talk to them first. People do it. They're open to approach whenever you can get to them. When you have the story from their side then you can compare with these other writers like max arther McAuliffe and McLeod, guys who were commissioned to do their works rather than drawn to.

This is a false narrative of Sikh history especially chapter 1. The reforms were designed by the British to transform Sikhism through the Lahore faction and Sir Khem Singh Bedi to suit British interests and colonization. This is the same Bedi who used to sit on a special chair next to SGGS in the Durbar Sahib. Sikh believe was manipulated to the extend that today we have such videos that narrate all the wrongs to innocent Sikhs.

I wonder if you actually made any realistic effort to understand other beliefs or your own where it specifically involved yours. If you are a Sikh You said in intro. Ahmadiya (Qadianis) an Islamic Reformist movement But their Guru Ghulam Qadiani claimed that chola Sahib was given to him and in his publication he drew picture of the Chola sab as well Did you conduct any research and do you need any references? Ghulam Qadiani also claimed he was Krishan Rudargopal and Geeta Revealed on him than claimed he’s King of Aryans. And his Mahema is written in Geeta He also claimed that he is Jesus, Moses. And Mary ( mother of Jesus ) I don’t know if it’s acceptable to honour people who mock your sacred personages in Sikhism but that’s what you have done and Hindus have done the same I didn’t see no publication where a Sikh actually refuted his Claims You need to do alot of work especially on. Marzaee”s their founder Ghulam Qadiani. Even the use of the term Ahmadiya is not allowed for them Also I will be surprised if it’s acceptable for you if someone claims that chola sahib belongs to him and he’s the one mentioned therein. Is it acceptable? A person who used to drink alcohol and before whom a woman would get undressed and who used to stay in Heera Mandi Lahore, who used to call those who reject him as “ Randioyn ki Nasal “. Halal Zada na he “. Was actually a person of a character to claim that chola sab belongs to him Is that not blasphemous? If Sikhs didn’t knew that shows their wisdom and intellect about their own faith and their founder The same principles applies to Hindus they have always protected Qadianis and promoted Qadiani like Tarek Fatah & Tahir Gora while this is what their founder claimed He made very offensive comments about Mary ( Mother of Jesus ) and still lived under the protection of Queen Victoria ( defender of Christianity) They are as good defender of Christianity as you are for Sikhism. Neither they done anything even scholarly to reject his claims nor any sikhs have done so far Similarly now they have Centres in Israel so he also claimed he’s the real Moses, he’s the real Abraham and still his followers are living under the protection of Those who call themselves Jews You got a lot of work to do

These videos are misleading for the panth. You disregard the bachans and the partap of Mahapurakhs such as Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh ji Khalsa and Sant Baba Attar Singh Mastuana wale. Not outright, although with a somewhat bibek budhi can be recognised. You have people calling Sikhs today as Brahmins which is again creating division because this statement must be contemplated through Gurbani especially. Bhai Surinder Singh for example will be in the category of Brahmin in your eyes yet Singh's like him were clearly sent by Maharaj and were already mukat and the feats he and the Singh's around him are those of Bhai Mehtab Singh, Bhai Sukha Singh, Baba Phoola Singh etc.

Interesting to see how hindu arya samaji parasites were against idolatry for hindus but chimped out when sikhs removed 50 idols from dabar sahib. Almost as if they want sikhs to remain docile and go against their own faith whilst being subservient to brahmins. Hindus still do this in punjab today where when sikhs speak out against secular nacharwaad, hindus are the ones to get angry at sikhs for doing so. Sikhs must reject all false idols if they want to combat the eternal bman and sullah.
