Awesome remake of one of my childhood foods made by my mom! We eat this every weekend now...and I make it for my kids...especially in the summer when we could grill the meat patties & pork slices on the BBQ! We use skewers for the pork slices and meat patties on the metal grill utensils from Chinatown...not sure what the name is....it has two sides that fold! I’m from Toronto, Canada, so Chinatown has pretty much everything they have in VN! Yay! Love that you are doing some Northern Viet style food! 👋🥰. So far I Love: Banh cuon & bun cha Ha Noi! What about banh khuc? My mom used to make them whenever she had free time, prewrap them individually and put them in the freezer for us to eat after school whenever we needed a snack before she got home from work! Fond memories....ah....keep it up Dzung!

    • @honeysuckle

Ooooh I vaguely remember Banh khuc as it was one of my dad’s favorites!! Such a great snack. I’ll have to try making that one day! 💗💗

I’m a hanoian and I do not approve this recipe for Bun Cha! Not the authentic way we make it. We do not use soy sauce for it. We do not use that kind of meat to grill. If you don’t use pork belly you don’t have buncha. And we do not eat it with bean sprouts. This is a southern twist. But I like you both and the way you interact.

  • @cece354

Vietnamese cuisine is the third healthiest in the world so I would not worry about the salt cause you do eat way more vegetables.

The tool they use to grill meat on charcoal stove is called “vỉ nướng” . Btw, black peppers and minced garlic will level up the dipping sauce, maybe some fresh chilly if you want a little kick of heat. Thank you for the video. It makes me miss my hometown.

My family uses kohlrabi and daikon interchangeably for do chua. One hack I’ve made bc I make so many different types of Asian food and have many various ingredients laying around is using danmuji, the Korean yellow radish as a sub for when I don’t feel like making do chua. I feel like when I was in Vietnam there was more daikon than carrot in the do chua, and danmuji has that authentic characteristic funk that daikon has.

My friends aunt makes green papaya salad often only because she has access to a papaya tree that had so many green papayas. Another friend would just go to Ralph’s and find an unripe papaya.

You two were fun to watch. The end result with the vegetable and herb platter was so beautiful! There's nothing so appealing to the eye as the Vietnamese veggie and herb platter at every meal. Oh, and fish sauce. LOL! Yeah, I always wonder why Vietnamese people say to buy 3 crabs brand because it's Vietnamese when it clearly says on there that it's made in Hong Kong. That's why I never bought it. LOL

I think there is something similar in Orange County to what you're talking about. It's a restaurant in Orange County called Phuong Restaurant.
The address is 10722 Westminister Ave. Garden Grove, CA 92843. They have a dry hu tie with the same shrimpy meat sauce you were talking about! I think it's similar and totally worth a try if you come down here. 🙂💕
