well done i have this kayak and i was looking to spend with new motor and all around like $300 to do another project i was looking at. you sir, are a legend, this is definitely the best way to do it, leaving everything fully intact as well, enabling disassembly in case you ever wanted to take it off, this is perfect, i work in a sheet metal shop for the air force and i have access to every tool imaginable, and i can easily make this, i just needed a better idea, thank you for uploading this, and thank you for taking the time to figure this out. what a legend. well done
Well I had to give a thumbs up to your comment, LOL. But seriously I'm so happy to hear how people are turning their kayaks into motorized kayaks it's great. Had my note for the first time this year yesterday, I'm up in Canada so the ice is just off the water. But with a Lithium-Ion battery,. man is this thing sweet. I'd say good luck for doing yours but I'm sure you don't need that.
Great Idea for the Transom design. I have a Pamlico Wilderness, that used to come with an OPTION to get a Motor with a VERY simiar FOOT steer and speed control and cost about $1600 with the motor, back in the 90s. I have a Pamilico know and am going to use your Transom design and reset this one up. Great Fishing machine to be able to get wherever you need....even in Strong Currents.
I'm currently adding a motor to my catch 100. I love ur transom design. I'm guna use aluminum and thick cutting board mine. I went with coated cable ran thru ice machine pex line just to keep the cables from getting hung up on stuff. Awesome video Sir!
Love the simplicity of it all. I just bought the Catch 120 last fall, then almost immediately injured my hand, so I've only had it on the water a couple of times. Looking forward to trying some fishing from it this year! I think a trolling motor would be a great upgrade.
I built the mount for my 100 and it works great. With no added holes which is amazing. I found some 12v32ah batteries for cheap and its perfect for evening out. Thank you for posting your build it helped me tremendously.
I agree. Did the pwm for under $30. Less wires. I got a harbor freight deep cycle 35 ah. I can go 3 hours (all my back and butt can take ), no paddling (ugh) and battery barely drops below 100%. Best upgrade I did..
Do you have a drawing / listing of the materials and dimensions of the mount - for instance length of mount, with 3 one inch square tubes. Thanks for your diy project, Dave
I already asked you a few questions about this setup and now I'm at the point where I'm going to set mine up like yours. I LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR SETUP and I have the exact kayak. one last question what did you use for the wedges to go into the handle so perfectly? Just the same 1×1 tube cut to fit? I figured if I asked I could save me some time.
yes, I took the same 1"x1" Al tube, about 3-4 long. Used a jig saw, cut it diagonally, from one corner to the other. End up with 2 wedges. Then just drilled small hole on the inside of each wedge and screwed it onto the main transom support. Put the transom into the handle, put it where I wanted it to be, with the locking screw at the front and from that put in the two wedges. Use a marker to get the exact spot, take it out and screw them in. Put electrical take to reduce the risk of sharp edges on the wedge once all done.
Iv looked everywhere for a carabiner like the one for your tilt want to use for R+L hand pull controls I don’t have foot rests on my PWR 100 you remember were or what you got them. Thanks again👍🏻🍻
You need a Lithium-Ion battery, Life-Po4 . I have a 100 amp hour battery and I can go for 8 hours lol, and 80 amp power would probably be five six hours
Got them at home Depot. But now I have trouble finding them as well. My buddy just simply took a about a 8-in long stainless steel screw. Put it right through the shaft, bolted it on and then put rings on the end. It does the same thing so you know being innovative.
Sorry I don't have a video on that. Get a closed plastic electrical box from home Depot, the control unit on a trolling motor is just a small little motor ,you'll see you can drill a hole for the control knob drill another hole to get the wires to exit the box.. I used waterweld to hold the control unit up against the top of the control box and I plugged the hole where the wires come out again with waterweld. What's that waterweld Hardened it's going to take dynamite to get it off. Simply take pictures of all the wires on the control unit when you take your trolling motor control unit apart. That way you can simply reconstruct it and seal it inside the electrical control box. One thing I did was take a 60 lb magnet and I screwed it glued onto the bottom of the box and then I put a metal plate on the kayak so it's on,it doesn't fall. I hope that helps, it's actually very easy and on the electrical box if you screw they are a bout 5 oR 6 bucks buy another one and start again. Good luck
I'm not sure exactly what I where I got it but I think I simply used an electrical cord there is heavy duty light duty etc right so you get something that's going to handle the amperage
Sub'd just for your ingenuity! I'm about to get my first kayak for my future rockhounding adventures. Definitely going to use a trolling motor. Have you ever considered hooking up a small solar panel to yours? I plan to use a 50 watt flexible panel that is currently on my van with the kayak motor & battery.
I have used the lithium iron battery a few times now and I absolutely love it. How to charge I just plug it into the house so I can't really tell you about a solar panel
Nice job on the transom design! I'm going to get my son a Catch 100 so finding your design comes at a great time. May I ask where you sourced the aluminum tubing? Thanks in advance!
@@SidZork01 Yeah those heavy batteries get annoying very fast. I’m currently looking for a lithium battery hundred amp. Which brand did you get? Thx mate

Good question that, what I did was look for a heavy-duty extension cord because I needed something that could take the amps. That I cut it up sacrifice to Corydon did the extension
By far best diy upgrade I’ve come across. Thank you!
Best trolling for the catch 120 I've seen so far. I'm going to do the same with mine. Thank you.

this is a lot less than $1600, and you can do 4 mph on the lake, so , not too shabby

Amazing. Well done sir! You made me want to upgrade to the Catch and try to replicate your build ! ... I'm jealous
Go for it, it's actually not that hard to do, just one step at a time.
A very smart design! Yet incredibly simple. I saved this video in case I do want to convert to power someday.
I use both motor and paddles. But the motor sure gets you where you want to go in a hurry
I have the same kayak those are some great ideas and an awesome video thanks for sharing!
Super inspiring! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for the info! I have been wondering how to do something like this and now I have it! Great ideas!!

Ahaha I havent but ill keep that in mind!
I like your setup !
Great video! Try building a pwm speed controller, it is much more efficient and will save you battery.
We'll have to look into that. With the lithium-ion battery I can go all day long right now so I don't run out of juice.
I think I have a project for the winter

It's not the taking part that worries me. I'm great at that. Its the 1-2 pieces I have left over when finished, that always stumps me.
Well done, sir.
What did you use to get the eye bolts on the shaft of the motor.

How do you pin the motor down while running it. Or is it heavy enough to stay down on its own with it wanting to come up
It stays down when pushing the yak forward. Even works in reverse

just 1 question, I dont think you mentioned, is this 1" Square tubing aluminum, or is it 1" solid stock aluminum,
It is tubing, it's Hollow and it's plenty strong. I have a 30-30 Minn Kota but if I were to do it again I might upgrade to a little stronger motor.
which cables did you use to lengthen the cables?
