I've been saying it for years, even before the Utena reference in Rebuild's third film, that the two shows are fundamentally alike! But I didn't even know of Reiji Yamada, I'll have to check out his work! Thanks a bunch for translating this, I hope this gets all the views!

They really are in a lot of ways--I remember hearing some vague tidbit about how Utena was influenced by EVA many years ago, but it was refreshing to learn about the connection more clearly. I'll to rewatch the rebuilds because I think I might have actually missed that reference (and a lot of other details as well lol)

@@m1nkey Its a purely visual reference, isn't it weird that Shinji just gets out of the entry plug and uses it as a platform to reach down for Rei? I don't know how you make sense of that if it wasn't an Utena reference, its shot for shot the same. But it only works because the two shows were so much alike to begin with!
