    The photograph of the badger under the log arch is a work of art John, my sincere congratulations!!

      Thank you for your kind comments, they are very much appreciated. I was very pleased to have this image shortlisted for the final round of the "Wildlife photographer of the year 2022", but sadly it didn't get awarded. However, i think it is one of my favorite badger images i have ever taken. Regards John 👍

    I have to say John, those are two superb images. Possibly two of the best badger shots i have seen. Compositionally, they are just about perfect. I love the way you have made use of the curves and sweeping shape of the fallen tree. Beautiful.
    Having envisaged your ideal image I can imagine your delight at achieving it but from a neutral perspective I think I prefer the first shot of the badger with the steam coming off it. However, I would be absolutely delighted with any of them.

    You certainly got the settings right. These are some of the best Camera-trap images i have ever seen. Just superb 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I’m about to build my first camera trap myself, and your pictures are a great inspiration. I was just wondering about the Flash settings. How do one get the right flash power? Is TTL the way to go? Greatings from North-Norway 😊

      Thank you for the kind words Stian. I never use TTL, its manual flash settings all the way. A good way to learn what settings are best, is to do some experimental tests at home with your pets or yourself as the subject during different lighting conditions, a few hours spent experimenting will soon give you an idea of how best to set up your lighting. I may do a more in depth video on this topic in the future. In the time being I go into a little detail on setting up the lighting in this video: th-cam.com/video/Tll06VGWbX0/w-d-xo.html
      I hope this helps and good luck with your camera trap project. 👍

    Hi John, I noticed you had a 30sec exposure (from in your description) wouldn't this just created motion blur from the badgers movement? I'm really interested about this type of photography now. Your images are absolutely incredible! Thanks for the follow up video.

    • @JohnFormstone
      @JohnFormstone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ben. If there was any ambient light or the animal was above the skyline then you would get some ghosting or motion blur, however, in the dark the flash sort of acts like the shutter and freezes the subject. I explain this in a bit more detail in my latest video here: th-cam.com/video/Tll06VGWbX0/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this helps.

      @@JohnFormstone oh yeah that makes sense! Thanks John, I'm just looking into all the equipment you need and it seems very confusing but I'm looking forward to giving it a go. I am slightly worried my gear will get taken but I guess thats the risk you have to take.

    Great videos! I am looking for something like you use, those tipe of poles for the flashes , did you make those?

    • @JohnFormstone
      @JohnFormstone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Elizabeth. The poles are extending landing net poles left over from my fishing days with a bank stick adapter screwed into the top to take my flashguns. Hope this helps.
