I miss watching all the drivers like AJ. My dad and I would always go to both the races at the Milwaukee Mile each year (when then had 2, now they have none). It was always neat to see all the guys who raced at Indy the week before in the first race of the year.

"In those days, A.J. would drive ANYTHING...and he won more races in different kinds of cars than anyone ever had. The fans loved him; he was...what racing was all about: the danger, the speed, the glory."
In this current era, with it's exclusitivity contracts...I'm not sure he's 'possible'. Tony Stewart might drive in multiple series...but no matter what he was in...open-wheel, stock cars, sports cars, anything else...he was a threat to win.
The Glory, indeed. Here's to you, A.J.

This was done for 1991, the year where he started on the center of the front row. During his stunning qualifying run, a fan was in the stands and had a sign that said it best, "A.J. HAS A BETTER IDEA." And he usually does.

I saw him race many times at the Milwaukee Mile during the 60s and 70s. He could race anyting, such as putting an old upright dirt car on the pole for the 200 mile Indy race in August. He finished second that day only because the dirt car's gas tank was not nearly as big as the other Indy cars and had to pit more often. AJ, like the Milwaukee Mile used to be, will always be one of a kind.

AJ published his autobiography in the 80's. I know it's in my home here somewhere, I want to read it again. Tough as nails is a great description of the guy.

1-16-2010. Sakes alive, sakes alive, look who's 65. Happy Birthday to one of the greatest drivers of all time. A.J., as a NASCAR fan, I remember your exploits at Daytona, especially February 1976. You put the France's in their place. I know that you are still kicking yorself over 1979 when you slowed down and Richard Petty won, but it was over-shadowed by Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough afterwards. Many happy returns.

AJ Foyt has been my favorite for years he really was a person to race cars and most people don’t know this if you didn’t grow up where I did because he even has built a place where his race cars can be seen in Houston as well as a big shop so he could have crews building Indy Race Cars , when he had that accident messing up his legs and feet he went through so much to get his self back at Houston medical even the ones that went to same place were given strength watching him come back , he will always be my favorite

The only reason AJ Foyt didn't win Indy *more* than 4 times was due to his giant brass balls slowing him down.

Foyt is now the earliest living Indy 500 winner. How fitting? He is now the driver of the Pace car (2011).

I find it interesting that AJ's IRL career as an owner mimics his time as a driver. His team was one of the best in the early IRL years (i.e. the Kenny Braack and Billy Boat years), but over time the Penske's, Ganassi's and AGR have pushed him to the back of the grid. Hopefully, he can get his team back to the front of the pack!

AJ's team built the 77 Coyote - but it was Bob Riley's design and the motor was a "Foyt" - which was the defunct Ford engine of the late 60s - with turbocharging - AJ bought the entire supply of blocks, heads and parts from Ford. The best thing Foyt did was lobby USAC to dial back the boost on all the engines to the level that made the Foyt/Ford the best engine (vs. the Offy -turbo)....until the Cosworth Turbo was available (Al Unser won with a Cosworth in 78)

i´m sorry but for me the best driver was Fangio. He was even a great driver in dirt when he racing on the 40´s.he won 24 races with cars that allways were much dangerous than the indy cars.he won five championships in the 51,54,55,56, and 57 with alfa romeo, mercedes benz , ferrari and maserati. All of you got to learn from this men too

Love how Sam Posey like typical american commentators only thinks racing resides in the USA. "Greatest racer of all time". No disrespect to AJ Foyt who is a real racer. But how about Fangio, Senna, Nuvolari, Jim Clark. Sam Posey I have zero respect for your segments.
