The incredible history of Penske | America's greatest team

  • Roger Penske started his career as a racing driver, he even raced at Goodwood in the 1960s as well as Le Mans. But eventually he decided that his future lay in running teams rather than racing himself, and thus Team Penske was born.
Since then Penske has won in every single sport it has entered, from Formula 1 to IndyCar, from NASCAR to sportscars. This is the story of that incredible history that will be celebrated at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.
    Is Penske America's greatest team?

What's interesting about Roger is he'll run any manufacturer that gives him the best chance at winning, never is he married to one partner and has run everything from Chevy, Ford, Dodge, Pontiac, Porsche, Mercedes, Acura, Honda and probably a few others over the decades.

Penske tried F1 in the 70's, Mark Donahue won a race and later was killed. Roger likes to make his racing pay its own way. F1 budgets don't make sense to his way of racing. Plus F1 was where he lost his "brother" and I think that really effected Roger. Plus, it is a European operation and he likes to stay close to home

"I wish I knew you existed earlier: we already have our line-up for next year..."
That's what Roger Penske said to "Gonchi" Rodríguez, after the Detroit CART GP in 1999. He finished in 12th place (scoring a point) being an absolute rookie [yep... It was literally his first CART Grand Prix ever], and made a great, great impression in Penske. Since Castroneves and Gil de Ferran were confirmed for 2000, "Gonchi" had to make the most out of his chance. He shone, so he was given another drive: Laguna Seca...
As a side note, do watch Gonchi, the documentary about his life and career, if you want. It has [DVDRip?] subtitles in English, so it's translated perfectly. If you watch it, then you'll see why Roger Penske himself was taken aback by a man from a small country that's not produced many international drivers.

    Sebring 12 Hours, 1964....
Roger drove the Mecom light weight Grand Sport Sting Ray Corvette C-3 Coupe sports prototype...
Mean by Zora Aekus Duntov to win Le Mans
Lead the early part of the race against the AC Cobra GT Coupes and roadsters...
And the Scuderia Ferrari 330P and 275P Sports Prototypes
    ( The ultimate winners, 1-2-3)
Until an accident broke a half shaft...
A Spectator generously offered the half shaft off his new StingRay....
So the team got to work, putting the car back on the track...
I was there to see this event.
    And the Daytona 2000km Continental
Won by Pedro Rodriguez in the NART '64 Ferrari GTO
I went to both races, 1964 thru 1973...
When the Arab oil embargo caused Sebring to be an IMSA funny car race.
Ferrari would leave sports cars for F-1 by 1974....
    I lost interest.
    FORZA FERRARI !!

Re-bodied and made into a real two two seater, with BOP V-8 power
    To be the first McLaren...
So the Penske 1972 M-16 Offy was a family thing..
I will never forget the 1971 Penske Sumoco Kirk F. White Ferrari 512M
    Racing against the 917s
    Donahue and Hobbs
    Along with NART
Tony and Sam.... in their Ferraris 512S and 512M
    The Children's Crusade
    The Golden Years...
