Nowadays, the vision of Disney seems to be IP over vision for everything else. They want literally EVERYTHING to be an advertisement for an IP now, sadly. NONE of them seem to care about Walt Disney's vision for the parks. It's all branding, IP, and advertising now. Disney is little by little losing the magic that made it charming. One of the cool things about Disney was that you would go to their parks and you wouldn't be hit over the head by IP. Sure, you would see Mickey Mouse and company walking around, and there were some rides and shows based on their movies and characters. But at the same time, there were so many rides and shows and areas that were completely independent of those things that took concepts and showed creativity and charm. Nowadays, they want some IP attached to LITERALLY EVERYTHING and they want to bulldoze and drop anything that isn't IP related. And they want to shoehorn IP into everything that didn't have it previously. In the process, they're destroying the charm of the parks, and making them advertising for their various properties. Seriously. Nowadays, could Disney build another Haunted Mansion, or Pirates of the Caribbean, etc the way they originally were? No. They would have to base them on some movie and we would see characters from the movies shoehorned in there. Heck. We're lucky that they figures a way to shoehorn characters from movies they own into those rides because without that, those rides would have been bulldozed too. If they can't figure a way to make a ride or attraction IP based in SOME way, it's on the chopping block, it seems. All I can say is that Walt Disney has to be rolling in his grave right now. He would have LOST IT if he knew that they were planning on bulldozing the Rivers of America to shove, "CARS LAND" in there. Modern Disney management is just... stomping on that Disney vision as much as they can right now it seems.
What do you expect? How much IP did Disney own in 55 when DL opened? How much do they own now? Of course they are going to use IP instead of creating something completely new. They also have IP covering just about any theme they can do so why not use what they have?
@@ono147intellectual property, in this context, it’s Disney haphazardly squeezing their films into the parks without much thought to quality. As much as Disneyland is a place for Disney films, it shouldn’t only be for Disney films. Disneyland’s rise to popularity had a good balance of original, high quality themes that didn’t rely so heavily on the Disney studio. Now the pipeline seems to be strictly make a movie->shove it somewhere in the parks.
I'm pretty sure I was one of the last few people to ride the "Phantom Boats" to Gummi Glen. I had been to Disneyland a dozen times and I had walked past it every time without even knowing what it was. My friend and I decided to go on it just to see. The cast members were barely paying attention they looked so bored. We rode it at night. You could barely see the "cardboard cutouts" of the Gummy Bears. Even as a 10 year old I knew there was just something insanely non-Disneyland about it all. Walked past it again at park close. No one in line. No fanfare. The next day there was no one on the dock. I don't remember how the line was closed off, but it seemed eerie that there was no one there. Still eerie to this day.
Brickey, you are the Indiana Jones of discovering Disneyland’s lost rides and I love it! My favorite thing to do is look for clues and artifacts of past attractions. It’s much appreciated! I show these videos and go to the spots in the park with my daughter so the next generation of Disneyland citizens knows where it started and how it got to where it is today. Thank you!
The current management, and entire board of Disney, needs to get kicked out. They are a joke. I’m amazed there hasn’t been a massive lawsuit for shareholder destruction of value.
Since the stock has gone from value in the 80s a share to 112 a share in Friday close, shareholders wouldn’t have a case to stand on. Yes, it did hit 200 at one point but it’s been sitting around 120 for the last year. And since 5 years ago shares were at 28 bucks, the shareholders aren’t complaining much.
The current management is lost, and they really need, as they say, a fresh coat of pant, something needs to change if the company hopes to continue for another 100 years
And I think they need to move out of California the costs of living in that state are too much for Disney to afford to keep their cast members financially secure.
@ you mean move Disneyland? Or move the Disney company over where the animation department and the CEO building is located, to move them out of California? Because if you mean move Disneyland, that would be kinda difficult
If Disney wants to blow people away, they need to build a maglev train, maybe replacing the Monorail with it. Magnetic levitation and frictionless travel on small scale at Disneyland, with maybe a small high-speed demonstration run from Anaheim to the beach and back. Yes, it would cost a fortune to build (and no doubt - insure), but if Disney wants to make Tommorowland "TOMORROW-land", this would do it. Pie-in-the-sky thinking, I know, but I really believe that Walt would be all-in on the idea. Thanks for your 2024 videos. Always informative, always fun.
Maglev trains exist. There’s nothing visually or technically futuristic about them. For the passengers it’ll feel exactly like a regular train. Colossal waste of money for Disney to consider that.
Hi Brickey!!! Just want to declare that you are the best! at producing remarkable aspects of Disneyland history!…Is inspiring to be nostalgic. Thank You!!..
Great video, Brickey! Thank you! Sincerely appreciate all the time and energy you put into your educational videos. They are very interesting. Wish you, your family and your great channel a great 2025!
Love the video. It may have helped to use Google Earth to superimpose the track network. Hard to visualize locations but love your historical shows. How about doing the original mine train by Big Thunder Mountain?
Heeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyy Brickey. Great stuff sir. I completely agree with the sentiments that current management seems frozen if not inept at times. But one thing that has caused the most issues for D-Land and other parks is the ADA that passed in 1990. Might be a reason why the the motorboats were removed by 1993 and the skyway by 1994 as these could not easily accomodate guests with disabilities. I'm surprised the canoes have somehow survived closure. The fort on Tom Sawyer Island is no longer accessible (original demolished) and I think the whole island will be transformed - so sad to see that go. SO I think the ADA and high insurance costs really did away with some attractions for good while inspiring other changes (like the new haunted mansion).
I’m curious to see what forms of transportation will come with the Disneyland Forward project? I’d love to see them not play it safe and come up with something innovative and elegant. As the footprint expands, the need and opportunity grows to come up with a creative solution to a practical problem.
I can only imagine what Tomorrowland would be like today if Walt were still here. There is no way that it would have been basically ignored or abandoned like it has been under current and recent leadership.
As a kid I barely remember the Viewliner. I do remember "Holiday Hill," my brother and I would run ahead of our parents and hide behind some shrubs or small trees then jump out and "try" to scare them. Merry Christmas to one and all........ NOTE: bob iger must be making Walt turn in his grave.....
Everything Disneyland stands for, how Walt envisioned it and how it became so popular with the public is written right there at the opening day dedication plaque underneath the flagpole in Town Square. Notice how it has no mention of shoehorning everything the studio in Burbank makes into every little corner into the park?
Bricky - I love this video! And you had some great points and today’s Disney. The truth is Disney is a multi-billion dollar corporation now and it gets mired in corporate decisions, etc. But that doesn’t mean they do not still take chances, just look at the Star Wars hotel. That shows they do take chances if they think it will pay out. But the other issue is the repressive business climate with dozens of permit needed, environmental impact reports, Cal OSHA and even unions. And it’s even worse in California. Can you imagine if they took an Oldsmobile today (if the brand still existed), cut it up then shoe-horned the engine and dash it into a train. Even Bob Gurr has said of the many things he designed (especially the Monorail) that the entire team, including himself were under qualified to do any of that. But back then they just hacked their way through it and got it done!
Another great but sad report. Walt Disney would be so disappointed. Walt Disney World. When it was being proposed, Walt talked about, there was plenty of land for growing for years to come. He'd be devastated to learn, to cut cost and corners, instead of expanding Magic Kingdom footprint, they are filling in Rivers of America. They're probably saving all that land so they can build another DVC tower. SAD!!!
Interesting, but not necessarily all there is to it. Back in the mid-50's, there weren't the construction restrictions and safety regulations that exist now. For example, there's the recent Florida state decision to inspect the monorail track at WDW... on a regular and scheduled basis. Not only has Disney management changes, but so has the world. But it did seem like the Viewliner was a prototype for Bob Gurr to be able to design the Monorail. That is very innovative. I also doubt that current management would go along with building an expensive ride for the purpose of replacing it with a next version. But then again, that's not how projects are executed now-a-days anyway. I think the innovation that Disney lacks now is a symptom of the lack of innovation found in American industry. People forget that SpaceX isn't the only company developing reusable rockets, that NASA and the military did the original heavy lifting and SpaceX just claims to be doing that NASA actually did first. But yeah, Disneyland came up with some cool stuff and were willing to go out on a limb to try it... which modern Disney management can't find a way to replicate.
It's worse than that Bob gurr who built the prototype also designed several of the attractions for disney Now thanks to TH-cam fans can get history lessons on the early days of disneyland Bob gurr has almost been erased form disney history and that is sad
The long-abandoned motorboat dock used to be my favorite SMOKING AREA at Disneyland!! Since Disney's not doing anything with it, BRING BACK THE SMOKING AREA!!! 🚬
if you're over 7, you already know disney is lost in space. that shit was fine in the 80's or 90's but epic universe must serve as a slap in the face/wake up call. i'm not paying a couple hundred bucks a day for the hottest rides from 1982.
Disneyland was built on dreams. Present management don't care about dreams, all they want is money. No wonder they paid off Trump. They both speak the same language. I want to see a dreamer put in charge - how about you, Brickey? Have a good holiday- but please come back! We need you more than ever!!!
I agree Walt wouldn't let things just sit. He was always moving forward.
You probably make some of the best quality Disney videos. I really like the history ones.

The Oregon Zoo has a narrow gauge train that is modeled after the View Liner as well as a 4-4-0 that resembles the E.P. Ripley
I was never more disappointed with Disneyland than the day I stepped into the ill-conceived Steampunk renovation of 1998.
Thanks for a year of awesome posts. Happy holidays Brickey!

In 2024 that is a big IF. Not sure they really care about actually blowing anyone away and I don’t believe they have the technical ability to do so.

Hi I was born in 1961 for some reason I remember seeing this dream liner. It must've been around after 1961 cause I know I've seen it.
I think that Disney should hire Mark Rober to re-theme tomorrowland in the short term. He has the energy and know how to inspire the next generation.
