How to update grub file in Fedora when dual booting

  • Apparently there's a bug introduced by some OS upgrade. The grub menu is completely skipped under Fedora 32. No grub menu at all even though Windows 10 is detected there's the default 5-second time out for gurb menu display.

Unlike other distros like Ubuntu, major Fedora upgrades overwrite existing grub file. Next time you boot your computer, all other operating systems are gone and you boot straight into Fedora. The solution is one line:
    grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

I just switched from Arch Linux back to Fedora (38) today. Everything works. My boot menu has Ubuntu, Windows and Fedora. No problem at all.

I've installed Android x86 as rpm and cannot add it to boot with fedora, in other linux distros i just changed custom40 file and updated grub, but i don't understand how i can do that with fedora's bootloader

I downloaded Windows (First) and Fedora (second) some time ago. Today I installed Windows 11, so windows took over my grub loader. And I cannot boot to Fedora anymore. Pressing "F12" only shows Windows and nothing else.
How can I boot in Fedora now? I do not want to re format.

You should not install Windows after Linux. I suggest that you reinstall Fedora.

Set in your bios the windows drive as the first in boot order. If windows and linux are installed on the same physical hard drive, then you are out of luck.

Hi, I have noticed this bug. This is quite recent, after I don't know which Fedora 32 upgrade. os-prober did find Windows 10 and Windows 10 does show up under grub.cfg. The grub file under /etc shows 5 seconds time out for grub menu. However, at boot nothing shows--grub menu is skipped completely. Fedora 33 will get released soon and I hope they will fix this bug.

Hey, today my grub menu is back with Windows 10 after sudo dnf ugprade. Fedora is a test ground for RedHat so sometimes quirky things happen.

i have windows 11 installed on nvme, opensuse 15.4 and fedora 36 installed on the same ssd (different from windows 11). right now, on boot menu there's only fedora and windows, i only can boot to opensuse if i enter to boot menu and select opensuse partition. "this grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg" command seems not working for me.
    when i do "sudo os-probe":
    /dev/nvme0n1p1@/efi/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi:Windows Boot Manager:Windows:efi
    /dev/sda2:openSUSE Leap 15.4:openSUSE:linux

mount: /var/lib/os-prober/mount: mount(2) system call failed: No such file or directory.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
    any help please?
