as a veteran who served in two wars you are right on the money, im fortunate i found a wonderful woman after i served to keep me grounded..i have been with her for 30 years grandkids and a life...but i realize im fortunate....but i got out because after desert storm i realized how much politics controlled us and we were nothing to them.....this episode hit me very hard

I love Mayday's line, "We're good soldiers. We followed orders." It was an emotional moment for me and it was a restating of Crosshair's brainwashed line of "Good soldiers follow orders."

You left out the most important part of that quote:
      "... And for what?"

But Crosshair didn’t follow orders. He’s a good soldier but not good enough for the Empire.

And i love that. Honest to god GOOD SOLDIERS FOLLOW ORDERS is my favorite line since clone wars s6 ep1. Never in all of my life have i heard such a powerful line in a movie/show.

    • @ImaginaryPerson1138
      @ImaginaryPerson1138 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That line was the clone's coping mechanism for having to comply with order 66. When mayday said "we were good soldiers, we followed orders" I saw it as him dealing with the fact that his coping mechanism was a lie

Another twist of the knife courtesy of the Empire: the Outpost was waiting 36 days for reinforcements but Crosshair noted the shuttle ride was only two hours long so help was that close the whole time. And we see at the end, the Empire called in dozens of reinforcements but only to help move boxes around.

The "Show Don't Tell" approach to this was SO GOOD... the Ice Vulture circling as Crosshair looked up, symbolizing his understanding that "My time in this life is drawing to an end..." was POWERFUL.
And you are RIGHT... the COMMENTARY on decades of Veteran's care here in the US with this show is just as powerful. Just like you, I have worked with the VA for years and man- it's heavy stuff.

I had the absolute biggest pop off this episode. Watching Crosshair's story arc and internal struggles has been some of the best writing I've seen in the Star Wars universe, and I've been rooting for him since the first episode. So when he finally took a stand against the evils of the empire and shot that lieutenant, my fists were pumping in the air, yelling out "Yes! Good on you Crosshair!", and a smile that wouldn't go away. I fear that choice he made will have major repercussions, but no matter what unfolds, our boy finally redeemed himself and his brothers and sister would be so proud.

  • @OptionZero

Continually impressed at how season 2 as picked up in tone and gravity from the end of season 1, and fits so well as a follow-up (From a viewer perspective) to Andor. The production team here knocked it out of the park with the visuals and music. And the writers were bold enough to bench the main Bad Batch to give Crosshairs the spotlight
Biggest key for me is that Crosshairs was not turned by single speech or gesture. His Bad Batch brothers actually failed to convince him to turn from the Empire. Only months of GRIND by the empire’s evil, viewed up close in person, turned Crosshairs. That is EARNED character development.
Also notably absent: the force, cute gimmicks, lightsabers, or Jedi.
With Filoni assuming more responsibilities in the franchise with his promotion a couple years ago, the people who shoulder lore responsibility and definitely deserve recognition are do-producer Jennifer Corbett and story editor Matt Michnovetz, both of whom worked on other Star Wars animated properties and are getting time to shine

    • @AarowSwift
      @AarowSwift ปีที่แล้ว +2

It looked nothing like the Marauder. The symbolism was death (vultures are always a symbol of death). Crosshair was literally being circled by death, representing his doomed position in the empire and in that moment he fully realized it.

These are Star WARS tales, after all - and war tends to lead to darkness, especially when you are following the soldiers. Although Nolan was, indeed, a waste of organic tissue; the Clone troopers weren't actually worse off than him in terms of dealing with the cold.
The black one-piece undergarment beneath both the clone and Stormtrooper armor is a temperature adjusting "body glove" that heats and cools the trooper's body as needed in various environments to mostly maintain a stable tolerable temperature.
They have to have that, or the conditions in their armor would quickly make them combat ineffective.

My opinion is that Crosshair's struggles are in acknowledgment of the struggles that actual snipers and drone pilots go through. The suicide rate is so very high because they are required to act as judge, jury, and executioner based solely on orders without any actual evidence or justification. There's a need to have faith in the legitimacy of those orders, and therefore, the legitimacy and authority of the organizations and leaders that they serve. Crosshair killing that lieutenant when he knew that he'd be unable to defend himself against the remaining troopers was essentially an act of suicide, just without having to pull the trigger himself. He even stood up, wanting to die standing on his own two feet, but couldn't maintain the necessary strength.

6:08 ... applause for your magnificent eye roll!! btw... a rotation is equal to a day.
I love how Mayday asks Crosshair his name and what unit he served with and we don't get a reaction out of him. Surely their reputation speaks for themselves but he took it in stride.
So Crosshair ended up where the group will be heading to. I don't think that they'll regroup together right away but maybe shortly after.
Before taking out the Lieutenant, I would have loved to seen him take out the vulture.
See you for the next episode.

The term "rotation" is a reference to the amount of time it takes the planet (or moon) you're on to rotate once on its axis -- which on Earth, we call a "day". But given the differences in rotation period for different planets, a "day" in one place might be 10 hours, and in others it might be 30. So "36 rotations" could be a very long time.
The term "on your six" properly means "directly behind you", although the term is used less "properly" in actual practice -- just "behind you" is close enough. It's usually not used to refer to friendlies providing you cover, but hostiles in a position to take you out. Still, we understood you.

Crosshairs words about being a soldier of the empire came back around. He's very interesting because his specialty is a sniper, he views things from a distance in battle and he views ppl and the rest of the world that same way. Of course the clone commander in that condition was named Mayday. Frostbite has gotta be a clone name too lol. As far as Cid goes I think she cares for the squad, but she's got a business to run in a galaxy run by tyrants and that may come first.

As a veteran myself the story of the clones in this season hits hard. Before i got discharged from the military I attended a week long course called TAPS. 4 days of learning how to write a resume and then an hour presentation on our benefits the final day. At the beginning when the clones are asking the imperal and she answers with a dismissive remark, it eminded me of the VA and how every answer they give to a question is "go online to our website" or "go fill out an application first". My final day the military ended with them discharging me and basically leaving me to fend for myself. Luckily I had friends and family to help. Without them I don't know what I would have done... and sadly that's the case for some. They can easily end up homeless. For two of my buddies I served with it ended in suicide... sorry for the rant this season had brought up alot of bad memories, but I'm glad it's getting attention. We need to be more aware of how we treat those who serve and die for our country. Sadly though those who need to see it will dismiss it because it's a cartoon.

  • @AarowSwift

Crosshair likely delayed telling Mayday his name because, until now, Crosshair has always held a very supremacist attitude towards regular clones. They were trash. He was an elite. Cody was likely the only exception. Now that Crosshair has been sufficiently "put in his place" by the empire, he's thinking a bit differently.

  • @muldoone6920

On your question of dark troopers.... research what "Dark trooper phase 0" Are. this is a theory for Crosshair, and the moment i realized what a phase 0 dark trooper was i felt terrified for Crosshair. The Empire doesn't just see the clones as expendable or a waste, they see them as a burden. I'll always remember the fallen, remember the clones who sacrificed for all of us.
Dark troopers have always been droids, phase 1, 2 and 3. Phase 3 are the ones we saw in mandalorian, in the end of season 2. But i never really put thought into how they came to be.. once you realize what a phase 0 is.. yeah... thats all i'll say.

I cried so much at the end of this episode. First, Mayday died, and then Crosshair had a death of sorts if the Empire is going to turn him into a death trooper or something like that. I spoke about this in my reaction, how Crosshair finally used his free will to turn against the Empire, and now it seems that the Empire will completely remove his free will and prevent him from making that choice. It'll be such a dark, twisted tragedy if the rest of Clone Force 99 finds him and sees that none of the Crosshair they've known remains.😥 I really hope that's not what happens.
I love the symbolism of the ice vulture and how Crosshair kept looking up at it while he was wrestling with his decision. It became clear to him that he was going to die anyway, sooner or later, and the Empire didn't care at all. Might as well frag the lieutenant before he goes down.
Also, when Crosshair saw all those ships flying overhead, it probably occurred to him that just one of them could've taken out the raiders' compound. But instead, the asshole CO sent two "disposable" clones to do it. Seeing Crosshair stand up and kill him made me so happy. But that happiness quickly turned into tears.

Nolan the Imperial officer gets fragged

  • @shugaroony
    @shugaroony 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Straight from the off, we all want Lieutenant Nolan killed in the most brutal way. His utter disregard for clones gets our hackles up!
So we meet Commander Mayday - Dee Bradley Baker's (and mine also) favourite new clone. Straight from the off you can tell he's been there and seen it all, and imbues authority and confidence in his command, unlike Lt. Nolan. Mayday technically outranks Nolan by at least two ranks, but with the clones now getting phased out he doesn't have any authority under the Empire, and so is left here on this iceball along with other clones.
I love the introductory scene between Mayday and Crosshair. When Mayday gives his name and expects Crosshair to tell him his, he does, but after a long pause. Clones don't have names under the Empire, he's CT-9904 and has gone under that for a while now.
When Mayday is fixing the mine and speaks with Crosshair about his former squad, and Crosshair mentions "they're gone...", there is almost a tinge of sadness in that line delivery. His brothers are on another path, and he is here...
Best episode of the show, period. When Crosshair lifts up Mayday to carry him, it breaks me. All this time, from Clone Wars, he's been saying he'll leave behind his brothers; but in Mayday he saw not a reg, but himself, a grumpy but pragmatic clone hero, a good soldier who followed orders, and instead of dying like the hero he was, froze to death protecting equipment for his replacements, all for a regime that doesn't care and classes him as an expendable obsolete item.
Second episode of TCW : "we are clones sir, we are meant to be expendable" | Plo Koon : "not, to me". This is the clones reward for ridding the galaxy of the Jedi and winning the war...
They get back to the base and Nolan refuses Mayday help. After he passes and Nolan's message about all the clones being expendable, the message gets through to Crosshair. He looks up at the vulture overhead. Its coming for him, its coming for all clones now. Ahsoka's bird, Morai is a guardian angel for her and helps her; my interpretation is this thing is the opposite, its an omen of all the clones fates. Crosshair finally snaps and kills Nolan; he'll be a part of this no longer, his brothers were right and he finally sees this.
Then when Crosshair now sees the error of his ways, the Empire doesn't despose him but brings him back in, to do god knows what nefarious thing to him, and sink him further into hell. This is his punishment for all the wrong decisions he's made.
What an episode, its just so bleak, there is no hope at all here.

As a veteran I have really appreciated Filoni digging into and showing how little any society cares about soldiers or vets. The nitty details they got in this and so many other arcs like Umbara has been terrific. Mayday calling the lieutenant by his rank in that voice was exactly how a vet would do with an officer who was crap. Crosshairs arc has been exactly right imo, because the guys I knew who were snipers were absolutely the last guys to put down the rifle. Mayday's rigging the mine, and then saving Cross from the avalanche was perfect way to show how vets will act in combat for guys they just met cause they wear the same uniform. I think the defector clone Rex met had kids?

Coruscant solar cycle was 368 days long with a day consisting of 24 standard hours. Galactic time was calculated off it. So a rotation is a regular 24 hours or 1 day. 36 days in a combat location without re-supply is a long time.

Probably the best bad batch episode there is. It's actually one of my favourite star wars episodes period. It was so good and full of emotion and darkness. It's the sort of thing I enjoy in TV and especially star wars. I'm not someone who cries in TV but I was close in this episode

@funnylilgalreacts I guess Crosshair could become the first Phase 0 Darktrooper... considering he is in Mount Tantis now...
Their basicly clones that were to wounded or to old to keep fighting having limps replaced with cybernetics and beeing enclosed in their new armor.
The process was quite painful and dangerous also many of these clones got trauma from this and fighting machines for all their lives to than become themselves one... its a fate possibly worse than death for many of them.

I love this episode, the rest of the Bad Batch is trying to find a new way to live while Crosshair is still trying to justify everything he has done by staying in the Empire. Watching Crosshair keep Mayday warm in the snow and carrying him back to the base was heart breaking. Mayday talking about following orders was just as heart breaking considering he probably ordered the death of a Jedi or Padawan maybe even killed them himself. I really hope Crosshair gets to have a happy ending.

I don't have much to add. This was a good episode. I think Crosshair was pushed to his limit with the utter contempt the former imperial lieutenant displayed. (I don't think he could have been any more insufferable.) I'm wondering if they're going to use Crosshair as bait for Omega. I guess we'll see. I'm on board for wherever the seasonal winds will take us. Thanks for the watch! I'll look forward to the next one.

The clones value loyalty and the Empire has no sense of loyalty. Probably another reason why Palpatine wanted to replace them.
Throughout Bad Batch, Crosshair has been loyal to the Empire with those like Rampart and Nolan treating him like a pawn and with disdain.
Throughout Clone Wars, Rebels and Bad Batch, Dee Bradley Baker has done a phenomenal job bringing life to the clones.

Probably the heaviest episode of the series. Brings up memories of the story arc with General Krell from Clone Wars, at least to a certain degree in terms of clone mistreatment.

Was so hoping for a crosshair redemption and he would return to the Bad Batch. IDK though. I sense those scientist have something sinister in store with him. Maybe use him in some way to get Omega bc that one doctor wants to find her to use as leverage against Nala Se

Why a show call "Bad Batch" have such great episodes when the squad is not around ?

    • @kenle2
      @kenle2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because the ones with the sane and basically moral members of the Batch don't usually involve the "heros" committing acts that would be "real world" war crimes.
And the "fans" seem to think those are the only episodes worth watching.
Which probably says more about those "fans" than it does about the actual quality of the episodes.

@@kenle2 For me, it is the squad that pose problem.
You have the leader with a heart of gold, the smart but troublesome kid, the dumb big guy and the overly intellectual nerd. All of them in the usual mess of the week.
I could have just described the Characters of Parker Lewis Can't Lose
Give them more than 2D personnality, make them evolve.
In contrast this season we had Crosshair and Cody having real growth.

So their characters have to "evolve" towards ... what?
Becoming another cynical, depressing buch of "antiheros"?
Yeah, because television hasn't given us dozens of those in live action over the past few years.
Look, we aren't going to agree here. You think you are being "adult" and I think swashbuckling action and a little blend of "romantic" melodrama is what Star Wars has had as its core for decades -and what made me a fan from the original 1977 version on.
You've got your opinion. I have mine. The difference is that not pretending I'm intellectually superior because of my opinion and too many "Andor is EVERYTHING" types are doing that in just about every Star Wars show comment section.
After a few months, it just gets tiresome.

Please let's keep civil. It is just my opinion.
Depth is not just melodrama, adult, gory actions or whatevers. And growth don't alway come with trauma, it come with experience.
Wrecker could have moments to shine beyond being the muscle and being afraid of height (so he is Baracus in the A-team).
Look at Grog in Vox Machina, Teal'C in SG1, Ka D'Argo in Farscape, Zeb in Rebels.
Hunter don't have to be so "intense" and "broody" 24/24, would kill him to light up or crack a joke. Melinda May in AOS knew when to be funny.
It is not Resistance bad, but it is not Rebels or Clone Wars.
Not being intellectual, just watched too much TV in the last 40 years.
