  • There's no other way to say it: Jeppson's Malort is terrible! But that doesn't mean you can't use it in some delicious cocktails. In this video I try Malort for the first time, talk a little bit about its history, and demo 3 Malort cocktails. 2 of them are from bartenders in Chicago, 1 is a riff of my own based on another famous Chicago cocktail. Thanks for watching!
    The Hard Sell by Brad Bolt
    3/4 oz Jeppson's Malort
    3/4 oz Beefeater Gin
    3/4 oz St. Germain elderflower liqueur
    3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
    - Combine all ingredients in a shaker, add ice, and shake hard
    - Strain into cocktail glass
    - Twist grapefruit peel over glass to express oils
    Malort Highball by Paul McGee
    1 1/2 oz Tequila
    3/4 oz lime juice
    3/4 oz orange juice
    1/2 oz Jeppson's Malort
    2 oz ginger beer
    - Shake all ingredients except ginger beer and strain over fresh ice in a Collins glass
    - Top with ginger beer
    - Garnish with crystallized ginger.
    Malort Axe: My riff on Danny Shapiro's Weathered Axe.
    1/2 oz ginger syrup
    1/2 oz orange liqueur
    1/2 oz Jeppson's Malort
    3/4 oz lemon juice
    1 1/2 oz overproof bourbon
    - Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker
    - Serve in a lowball glass, with fresh ice if you want
    - Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint if you so desire
    Cheers!

    I found out recently that you can get Malort at your local liquor store in Omaha, NE. I asked the owner if they sold a lot of bottles of it, and he said "Mostly as gag gifts". I told him about a tweet I saw recently that said "It's only Malort if it comes from the Malort region of Chicago. Otherwise, it's sparkling gasoline"

    I really like Malort in cocktails. I cooked this up a few weeks ago: 1.5 Malort, 1 Cherry Liqueur, 1 Liqueur 43, 0.5 Maraschino Liqueur, 1.5 Lime Juice (try Lemon also). I'll have to try your Malort Axe soon!

      That sounds really good! Balance out the strong flavors of the Malort with some of the equally potent flavors. Thanks for checking out the video! LMK if you try the Axe!

    I love Malort, I am one of the three people that can drink it straight and enjoy it. It was introduced to me as a prank, and I loved it. ( I also drink my coffee black no sugar)

      Whoa! Drinking Malort straight is next level! Do you drink it on the rocks or neat? I actually wonder if I might like it any better if I tried it again since I've gotten more into amaro and other bitter liqueurs. Could be worth doing a follow-up video maybe! Thanks for the comment Kara! Hope you have a great holiday season!

      I’m with you - I can drink it straight and it’s become like my version of a Stupid Human Pet Trick because people refuse to believe I actually don’t hate it. I’m looking forward to trying it in a cocktail though…if I can sneak it in when someone is least expecting it… 😈

    My stuff are green though and tastes more like licorice.

    Malort to me is similar to aperitifs like Campari, but without any sweet notes. and the most infamous part of Malort is the aftertaste. Unlike others, the Malort taste just lingers in your mouth for minutes and doesnt want to go away. But in limited amounts I dont mind it too much.

    • @ThroughTheMixingGlass
      @ThroughTheMixingGlass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m from the Chicago suburbs and Malort is a pretty common addition to evening. Go for PBR and a Malort shot (aka The Chicago Two-Step). My group of friends will also usually order a round of Malort when somebody gets up from the bar for the bathroom. Nothing like coming back to find a nice tall Malort waiting.

    • @ThroughTheMixingGlass
      @ThroughTheMixingGlass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's an amazingly evil prank...love it! I would've thought the two step would be with Old Style!

    • @jkoller
      @jkoller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For sure Old Style is the first choice for the two-step, but we still have a few local places that have PBR on tap. As in, every day since the 60s so we usually go that route. A fun twist on the Malort surprise is do it to somebody after you’ve conditioned them by doing the same thing with Jameson. Pull the Jameson shots trick two or three times over a couple of weeks, and then substitute with Malort. First they get to experience the existential dread of a Jameson shot, but it’s followed by….
      Yes, I’ve done that. Believe me, they cannot tell the difference visually or by smell in a dark bar. For some reason, people still go to bars with me.

    How dare you sully Malort by mixing it! For real it's so good. Tastes like grapefruit pith. I'm curious how you like your coffee. Most folks I know that like malort (there are three of us!) also like strong dark black coffee. Anyway loved the video even though you didn't like the "Sweetest Swedish Liqueur".

      I've been really curious about this for a long time! It has such a notorious reputation and a lot of people hate it, but I happen to love strong flavors that some people do not like such as absinthe, bitter liqueurs like fernet, and briney scotches. I also love strong black coffee. Def need to hunt down a bottle.

    • @ThroughTheMixingGlass
      @ThroughTheMixingGlass  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it's terrible for shots. The grapefruit makes sense to me too. In the second drink in this video where I squeezed a grapefruit peel over top, it tasted very very strongly of grapefruit. Much more than I would've expected for just squeezing a peel over the top. Definitely better in a drink than by itself! 🥂
