I always appreciated that Vanguard put on some of the more esoteric shows in DCI. I agree that their fare was often a lot drier than other corps' shows year to year, but I think that being a little bit 'formalist' (or at least as formalist as drum corps can be) was a defining part of SCV's identity. I think the Winterguardification of DCI has homogenized the activity to such a point that the little characteristics that made corps recognizable as who they are have been eroded away like river rocks. As an old DCI vet from the late 90s, it's sad to know that I was marching at the end of that era.
Wonderfully designed and performed in all sections...but...emotionally disconnected from the audience.
