      Good idea. BTW. Sirui has a 35mm dropping in August. I would highly recommend getting in on that early bird special over the 50mm. The 50 is quite tight. Plus the 35mm will be available in EF Mount as well. From all the lenses I own in Anamorphic the Sirui is definitely on its way to being the best of the best. Vazen is great. But if you shoot on gimbals etc. It’s to damn heavy as you will absolutely have to build a rig with rails to support it. Plus they cost 3 grand....While the Sirui you can just throw on. As for a good zoom lens. I would suggest Sigma Art 18-35mm. It’s like having several primes in one lens and it is only 600$ and it is an excellent lens. Works rad on the pocket 4K and is a great photography lens as well. Hope these notes help. Good luck.

      Totally agree, the night shots on the Sirui were grating to me. I wouldn't use the Vazen wide open but I'm excited to rent it for a day and do some tests myself. The flares look great and not distracting at all. Though I think I would use the Sirui in a daytime forest setting or during blue hour.

    I'm procrastinating over the DZO although being T2.9 probably not a low light contender particularly with the GH5, but a great lens for daylight shooting and the fact that it is parfocal is a big attraction. Then I am also interested in the latest Xeen CF Cine lenses, they look really nice but of course being cine primes not so easy to afford several of them. hmmm

    an alternative for the 4mm laowa lens would be an old cctv c mount lens (should be less than 20mm I guess) plus a c mount to MFT adapter comes pretty cheap if you are lucky maybe under 20 bucks.

    Which do you prefer? The Sirui or Vazen? I am super torn personally. Sirui has a 35mm coming out next month that I am so excited to get, because I am incredibly amazed at the image quality of the 50mm. It is a bit to tight for me, and I would of gone with a 40 or 35mm to begin with. I like the 1.33x as well. But the Vazen I can crop down, as well I like the large numbers for the focus and TStop which I think Sirui should of done on their lenses. The Vazen has that classic cin lens build but, it is super heavy and it does make use of certain things like gimbals much harder. Plus the cost is in the thousands vs 700$.... I really love both lenses but I am leaning more on the side of Sirui mainly because of its size. And with the new lens coming, which will also be available in EF Mount. Dude I think they are gonna dominate the anamorphic market. So I am hoping to see a 16 or 18, 21, 28 and 70mm or some macro lens from them in the future. But I do think they should make a “pro model”. Something that has larger numerals on the dials. Gears. And maybe a slightly larger front element and wider aspect ratio. Lastly. I have to note that the current 50mm Sirui lenses, the flares vary. Some flare like yours does and some are much harder to get flares. I actually tried three of them before settling on the one I have now. So something has changed. Not sure what. The first lens I tested the flares was actually crooked. Second had massive flares. This one I have now, has the perfect amount of lens flare - and I need to note that is with no filters. Besides NDs I use the Soft FX 2, and Promist 1/4th in my box to help soften my lenses up. Anyway. Thanks for sharing. Can watch, talk and do lenses all day. Haha.

  • @andersmyrdahl5695
    @andersmyrdahl5695 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think it's possible to use the Vazen on a gimbal? Maybe mount it with a lens clamp so you shift the weight from front heavy to a more balanced position? But maybe it's just way to heavy.

      I’d imagine the first one is it’s slow compared to the Art/bones combo. 2.9 is very slow on MFT. Also a lot of people like that digital electric sharpness of sigmas. The dzo seems more soft (which I prefer). Plus it’s native MFT which is a little more limiting if you ever swap cameras. Just a couple of reasons why I think it won’t sideswipe the sigma.

    I'd completely forgotten about these DZO (linglung) lenses and really look forward to them becoming available. I've been so wanting a fully manual zoom lens of good quality that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. And from another video I saw, it seems that these (the 20-70mm and 10-24mm) might just tick all the boxes.

    Fantastic Review! That Vazen anamorphic is definitely a lens i'd love to try.. the 20-70 was a nice surprise as was the smaller 1.33 anamorphic! Ill definitely check them out! Its looks like the only limitation with Vazen on black magic is the aspect ratio. I would also add that on the GH5 in 4:3 opengate you can get 2.39/2.4 aspect more natively than the extreme wide 3.55:1 without cropping that happens on the black magic 4k in 4k, dont know if that was mentioned or not.

    Hi Tom, SIRUI anamorphotic 1,33x is not suitable for GH5 if you want to use the whole sensor. GH5 sensor is 4:3 (1.33). 1,33x1,33=1,77 (16:9). For GH5 anamorphotic 2x would be suitable, if you want to use the 4:3 sensor completely. What do you think about SLR Magic anamorphotic Lens 2x for MFT? :-)

    Whats the focal length equivalent of the Vazen?

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a 40mm anamorphic. Can't compare it to anything so don't do the whole equivalent game. A 40mm on a MFT sensor looks a certain way and then a 40mm on full frame or super 35 looks different. Anamorphic 40mm looks even more different. If you like the look of the shots in my tests then you will like the lens. If you don't like it you won't. 40mm on M43 anamorphic is a good mid focal length. Good for most shots like medium close up. If you want telefoto or wide then it won't work

      Tom Antos Thanks for the reply! Would really love to think these lenses as “normal” lenses somewhat similar to 25mm mft or 50 on the full frame. I’ll wait for their 28mm wider lens and see it from there if its worth the investment

    Do not use variable ND filters as your go to filter. They polarize your image taking the natural highlight and shine off your subjects faces. get a 2.1 nd and a 1.2 as your walk around options and you will be fine.

    Got to be honest I like a lens flare as much as the next guy but not in EVERY shot. I think it would start to get on my nerves a bit. I think I'd rather just add fake ones as and when I want them.

    • @airindiana
      @airindiana 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve got a sirui 50 and you’ll be suprised how difficult it is to get it to do the blue flares, basically you need a direct car headlight or really strong light. Even a street light didn’t set it off unkess pointing straight at it. So it’s easily controlled with a matte box.

      I just showed how wide you can get with these lenses but of course it's meant to be zoomed in so you can reframe it to be full frame 16 by 9 or wider etc.

    I'm asking myself why would anybody bother with anamorphic lenses, when you can do any/all of that in post, and spend your money on a better, clearer lens with far less flare instead?

    • @LOMISFILM
      @LOMISFILM 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because clearer/sharper doesn't always mean better for video. Always use the right tool for the job!

    • @ryancspencer
      @ryancspencer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LOMISFILM Anamorphic is not used for flare only. When a lens is oval, and and then desqueezed, the image still has many characteristics that you can never achieve with a spherical lens. You can show me 100 shots shot on a spherical lens with a post flare, and 100 shot on a real anamorphic lens and I can point out which each one is every time. The background also looks different, and the bokeh.
