I entertain through this TH-cam channel, which I also earn money from. I am both an artist and entertainer. Don’t come for me, plz.
Honestly, I'm glad you've shared this. I would love to do more art and try my hand at watercolors. It's nice to see you can do things for less of a price. Thanks for sharing this, Emily!
Can I suggest creating prints I love buying unique art from artists I love and hanging them in my room, I would really love to have some prints of your work
Sometimes they are really good!!! But they make them for the sake and fun for little kids, I am an artist myself and I appreciate every art kit I get even if it’s kid like.
As a professional artist myself, or a young one at that, I don't see anything wrong with the art supplies and the actual art supplies section of walmart. The acrylic paints are pretty good, the drawing books are okay, much more decent than some of the discounted sketchbooks I've gotten from michaels, there are definitely some cheap things there, but they definitely sell a good brand of drawing paper that my art teacher would always give us. She was very ecologically friendly, and so I trust her judgment that this company is good with that. If you would like to know the extent of how eco-friendly she has tried to be in the past, we were once doing a project involving paper plates, where we made collages or something I think I don't quite remember, I just know that's what I did, she literally bought eco-friendly disposable plates that are biodegradable and unbleached paper and such. She was such a wonderful teacher, she was always very laid back and open-minded and fun. You know how most baby boomers tend to be never mind didn't crappy? She was not. She was very bubbly and accepting and happy, she really tried to bring the best out of all of her students through inspiring their inner artist. She never pressured us to do art in any particular way, she believed we each had our own art journey. I loved her
@@lanes7410 oh think that’s because of people stealing because of the pandemic some of the Walmarts are empty lol so people got they early shopping it crazy 😂
I'm from Mexico, we have Walmarts too and to be honest the art and school supplies sections from my country are way less fancy than the American ones. Still Emily's point is relevant, sometimes you got to get creative with the resources at hand. Although, deep in my heart, I wish they would sell the Canson sketchbooks here 😢. Of course you can buy them via Amazon and local stores (my preferred method).
@@RebeDrawsStuff I didn't use fancier supplies until I got my own job, and let me tell you-the supply does not make the artist ;) Work with anything you got and you can make cool stuff.
@@idkhow yes, i also work at walmart and do not care, just make sure ask permissions because it's actually illegal for film or take pictures of the premises
I'm glad you're addressing the Walmart shaming. A lot of people forget that sometimes places like Walmart are one of the few or only options. If you live in a smallish place like me it's more practical to shop at Walmart because they have everything. If you go to target a lot of things are missed or too expensive, and Kroger only sells groceries. So yeah.
Walmart is starting to sell good art supplies now too. They now carry Apple Barrel paints and the Sharpie liquid chalk markers, Sharpie oil based brush markers as well as some good copic alternatives. That is just in store. They have more online too.
Yep. I don't have the money really to keep revisiting the same art shop that's around 4 hrs away for more expensive art supplies. As much as I love to support art stores, I also don't like travelling further than an hour away from my house. Ordering online is good, but again, prices are pretty high
yes, i too am glad. i dont get art supplies there, i try to save up for nicer ones but when it comes to food. im on food stamps and also vegan and walmart actually has a lot of cheap vegan options, so its really the more budget friendly option than other places. i try to buy local or from small business when possible, but its just not always possible with the money. and i know when i have kids in the future i will just want to do whatever to provide for them, that is more important than boycotting large corporations like emily said
@JOE DRAWS its not that its not the best place to work. Its got horrible working conditions (just like Amazon) but sometimes it's the only practical option. I wish their was a store that knew how to treat their employees and was as readily available but that's just not the case.
If you can get to wal-mart at back to school time, the twelve pack of colored pencils is usually about 97 cents, which would put you at $10 ;) Back to school is the best time to grab art supplies for your whole year if you're in a place where you have to watch cash.
"Bini is super respectful of my stuff, probably because I'm super respectful of his stuff" No, it's because you're a good mom and raising him to respect others' belongings :)
Awh, thank you! Honestly, the most important thing I learned about parenting is to demonstrate good behaviors so your child will mirror those same behaviors. I respect his space and his belongings and he respects mine and others’. He’s got a good understanding of boundaries in that way, so he knows what’s communal property in our home and what isn’t. It doesn’t always work out that way for every kid, that’s just what works for us!
If you’re in the US, check out Craigslist free section. There are a lot of apps for free stuff, like Nextdoor and Freecycle too. Only suckers pay for art supplies.
Walmart and Costco are dangerous. I can walk out of Target, Sephora or even a Micheals without buying anything but these two Giants are really shopping goblins!
POV: Bini grows up and watches his mom shop for his clothes in front of a camera to thousands of people and learns why he owns a pretend cleaning toy set
Dude same 😭😭 it's literally not even the good type of student grade items that we have here and THEY ARE EXPENSIVE 😭 Let alone if I ever find anything actually of good quality.. like higher end student grade or studio/artist grade..
From what I've seen, Crayola is marketing their washable watercolours more heavily. I do believe the original is still available, usually with the terms "semi-moist" or "education". I don't think Crayola is available widely outside America so the Faber-Castell student grade watercolours are a great alternative!!
I'm a Canadian and I can assure you they are very very popular and available here too! any walmart, dollarstore and even dollar tree heavily market them too. I can't speak for their availablity in other stores in other countries tho.
I don’t think I have ever seen crayola outside of English speaking countries. In Germany, it is more common to find staedler or Farber-Castell. I think France has more BIC products. I do imagine that a lot of countries basically have their own products.
I love how you made that disclaimer. I didn’t even think about that but I love that you were thoughtful enough to think about adding that in 🖤 The art though?? I love how ✨e f f o r t l e s ✨ you draw everything and I can’t get over all your funny animations and edits here and there 😭👏🏻
I haven't gone there in many years, but heard about stuff for the bullet journaling so I may need to check it out. I'll need to figure out where it is....
Thanks for your respectful disclaimer! To each their own in terms of what stores they support, since everyone’s situations are so different. As someone who actively avoids Walmart, I understand that this is a privilege and others shop there out of necessity. Money does talk, but you gotta take care of yourself first!
target actually has a really good art supply section! at the closest target to where I am (which is NOT a very big store by any means) they had a BUNCH of art supplies under their “mondo llama” label, such as sketchbooks, alcohol markers, watercolors, acrylic paints, brushes, and more. And not just their store brand, they had some of the fine art crayola products, some prismacolor products (brush pens, alcohol markers, color pencils), and a nice variety of art papers, and even some art guide books for sketching and watercolor
ALSO while I’m at it three other stores that deserve honorable mentions: Five below: I’ve gotten several of my sketchbooks from there, as well as two different sets of alcohol markers, plenty of pencils, markers, pens, gel pens, etc in their art section. They also have paints but I haven’t tried them yet as of this comment Ross: I know, I know, a discount clothing store having art supplies? Seems crazy, but actually they have a decent art supply section! I’ve actually gotten pretty decent acrylic and watercolor paints from ross, as well as HEAVILY discounted strathmore sketchbooks (watercolor, mixed media, drawing, and so on), among other things. Because they’re basically a close-out store, they have extra stock that other stores couldn’t sell, and therefore you can find a LOT of decent supplies there. Tuesday Morning: Okay so I don’t know how common this store is around the country, but where I live there’s at least one in all the bigger towns near me. They’re also a close-out style store (the name comes from the days when they would get shipments in and turn over inventory) but you would not BELIEVE the stuff I’ve found there. Spectrum Noir illustration marker sets, quality sketchbooks and cardstock, bruynzeel color pencils (regular and watercolor), sketch pencils, canvases, wood panels, washi tape....you literally never know what you’re going to find. If you don’t find something good that time, literally just come back the next week and they’ll have entirely new stuff in their crafts section. And because of the kind of store they are, the discounts are EXTREME. I got a bruynzeel color pencil set that was worth nearly 50 bucks for 15.
Your Walmart with it's "picked over" art stuff is a heck of a lot better than my Walmart when they are supposedly "fully stocked. That said, thank you for showing that even artists on small budgets...and kids starting the art journey...can get good supplies at reasonable prices.
I got my art degree using the cheapest of the cheap art supplies. I couldn’t afford anything else, just like most people in my class lol. I hate to hear that people are shaming others for not using top of the range brands. I only have expensive products now because 1) I make my own money lol and 2) I sell and gift my work, I need the materials I use to be as long lasting and lightfast as possible. 😊
that's super cool but super surprising too! i don't think I have heard of college art professors/instructors being cool with students using materials that are not recommended by them which are usually quite pricey but I suppose it's always possible to ask or just be resourceful. glad to here it worked out for you, warm wishes!
Michael’s is so overpriced though. Everything they sell can be found much cheaper at actual art supply stores like Blick or Jerry’s Artarama, except for their house brand.
@@mspeonydoodles7889 I've never even heard of an art shop called Blick, or Jerry’s Artarama. They sound cool, though! An hour away, we have a Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and a Joann's Fabric.
Have you tried Ross? Ive been finding lots of cool sketchbooks, pencila, pastels and packed canvases for $5-10. Got to try different days because the supplies change weekly.
I feel you, my anxiety has been bad recently. I hope you are feeling a little better. you can her through this even if it feels extremely hard in the moment.
Thank you for that disclaimer! I'm so tired of people putting down others who can't afford to boycott these corporations because it's all they have! Subscribing now!
Omg YES Emily!! I always get so excited when artists promote budget-friendly and reusing/repurposing for art supplies! I'm assuming this will be like a series? As a minor and someone in the doll customizing community (which is you don't know is very commonly super expensive and it seems like many artists feel the need to buy expensive products to 'advance') I found myself feeling the same way and feeling like my cheaper work wasn't good enough. it took me 3 years to finally get over that and realize that there is value and skill involved in making art for cheap and being thrifty which is what I'm all about now and it's actually a challenge for me to see how cheap or zero spending I can go! Thank you so much for this series Emily! I can't wait to see more and possibly learn a thing or two!
If you live in the UK. The Works has really affordable art supplies, their water colour sets and fine liners are really good and only a couple pounds and they tend to have a variety of different mediums (though the clay and notebooks aren't too good). Hope this helps xx
Their £1 sketchbooks are the best and excellent to start practicing. I also used to buy some flat canvases (can't remember the proper name and English is not my native language), those were excellent to experiment with acrylics and for small projects.
When I used to live in the UK I was an avid TheWorks customer 😂😂 I still have some brushes from Boldmere and the Royal Lagnickel paintbrushes they used to sell for £2 or £3
Walmart actually has quite a bit of decent art supplies now or at least mine does they sell 24 pacs of prismacolor scholar pencils not as nice as premier but a lot better than crayola ! And just the other day they had a 4 pack of Uni-Ball Signo board pens! In white, gold, silver and metallic red! And they’re starting to sell decent brands of sketch books as well like Canson and stuff. I’m excited to see what her local Walmart carries. 😁
I’m so jealous, I was looking for Canson at my local Walmart and they stop carrying it. I glad she’s doing a Walmart budget hall including since Hobby Lobby stop doing the 40% all the time discount. 😒That was there only reason I didn’t stop shopping there with how they treated their workers and customers last year.
@@Kohana07 oh no what happened with hobby lobby? or was it just your local one? also i really wanna find good sketchbooks at walmart to but they never seem to carry them ahaha
@@michaeljackson2928 Hobby Lobby stop doing the 40% off any time. Also I didn’t like the way they handle the store during COVID when they marked themselves as essential during lockdown when they knew they weren’t. (Also the excuses they made saying God told them to stay open during the time.). Endangering the older demographic that goes to their store the most. To be honest the 40% anytime was the only reason I kept shopping there. With Walmart they revamp their art department; there are some really nice art supplies there but I noticed that I haven’t seen the Canson Mixmedia books as of late either. So I’m assuming they aren’t carrying them in my area. (I’m not sure if it’s all Walmart’s.)
@@Kohana07 Idk outside of sketchbooks which I just buy from Walmart, I've found that even without the 40% off coupon I still get most things cheaper and more variety of supplies at Hobby Lobby(only other store neat me aside Walmart) vs Walmart considering the sales every week that alternate weeks.
Had a friend who would do these amazing drawings in college and she would only use those bic crystal pens ypu can get 20 for like a dollar. Practice to get the skill, what you use doesn't really matter.
This is exactly what I tell people! It's the skills that count. What supplies you use... Doesn't make you any less of an artist. You can still make amazing art with the cheapest of supplies. Yes, it's nice to be able to use that high end, artist grade paints or markers that every artist drools over for, but there's so many cheaper alternatives that get over looked, that will give you the same end results as the expensive stuff.
Yo, Bic pens are dope and so cheap. I bought a pack for just one dollar at a clearance store. They are my favorite to sketch with. There was a time in my life where I spent so much on expensive art supplies I barely used, when I could easily saved money. Something I definitely regret. Don't be like me. Lol
honestly, if push comes to shove and you have no other option, good old leftover printing paper. newspaper, pencil, and ballpoint pen always do the trick. and even when you wanna paint, if you really cannot afford paint, you can always use cheap coffee.
I suggest you find an art store around were you live.Convince you’re parents to go there or go to five below the sketch books and other things are just 5 dollars you can get a 80 page sketchbook for 5 dollars but at Walmart the last sketch I got from there was like 8 dollars and it was only 75 pages lol😂
@@NoirRaven Wait what? Some people live from selling their art. Of course some people can do digital art but others sell traditional drawings and illustrations. Anyway, that's the worse excuse for not selling art supplies.
Think of it like this, don’t get discouraged by people who shame others for cheap art supplies, because if you can make good art with the cheap art supplies then you are better cause some cheap art supplies don’t work well. And another plus is that while they be spending like $40-$100 you be spending less than $40. Big flex😌😌
A couple of years ago I participated in Inktober (before all the fairly recent controversy) and I literally used a papermate write bros stick pen and a pad of knock off post it notes lol. By the end of the month I was able to create pieces that to my eye looked comparable to some art drawn with more expensive supplies.
Hosntly the most expansive art supplies i hought was some soft pastles for 60 dollars amd its because it was put in the wrong place and they i thought they were 20 dollars. The only really exspesive brand i would hosntly like to invest in is copic markers just because ive used cheap alcholol markers and they dont work as well
I respect you for including your disclaimer. It’s great if you can afford to support smaller business but not every has that ability so it was really thoughtful of you to include that. Also I recently got a set of crayola watercolor, the normal kind and they didn’t have a weird sheen at all. Hope that’s helpful to anyone.
I loved this video! Also, that disclaimer you made was great. Walmart has upped their quality in recent years and while it's still an awful chain, they do have some decent supplies for affordable prices. I remember I used to get most of my things for school and doodling at Walmart because we were hard on money. Now that I've collected some art supplies over the years, I like to look back at my starting items and watch people make profession art with cheap supplies. With the right skills, you can't really tell what the price of the artists tools are. For anyone wanting some more ideas relating to what she said, lemme info barf some supply knowledge here: Crayola: You can do watercolor washes using the classic chubby crayola markers. Color them onto a palette or glass/waxed plate and mix some water in. The semi-soft tips of thick crayola markers are great for practicing lettering, calligraphy and line weight. I'm a caricature artist and we use them to do practice sketches and lettering sometimes. (They are not lightfast though and will get bleached by prolonged exposure to light) Crazyart: At least it's not roseart! Crazyart markers a pretty good cheaper version of crayola and they have some vibrant colors. You can do watercolor thing with them too. Prang and Bienfang: Two watercolors that are about the same as crayola, though prang is probably a bit nicer. Proart: Not as popular or as cheap as crayola, but cheaper than the top brands. They have some great woodless pencils (color and graphite). Artist Loft: Overall they're supplies are pretty good (haven't tried they're acrylic). Their watercolor pencils are cheap but good quality. They have some solid canvas panels if you want to experiment with oil/acrylic painting for cheap. It's a good option between Crayola and student or even Uni grade supplies. The classic art kits: We all know those all-in-one art kits either in plastic or wood boxes. One kit I got growing up had some hard watercolor pans arranged in rectangular plastic sections. I still have them to this day and they are pretty pigmented. My art professor from college told me she still kept the ones she got when she was younger because they're a great, affordable gateway into watercolor painting and they just have some nice vibrancy. There's better cheap ones now, maybe a few bucks more, but there's some goodies hiding in there (watercolor, pencils, sharpeners). You can also repurpose the wooden box ones for your other supplies. Student/Scholar versions of more expansive brands: Derwent, Prismacolor ("Prismacolor Scholar"), Faber Castell, Staedtler, Daler -Rowney and Liquitex all have a student or 'scholastic' versions of they're supplies. Winsor and Newton has university varieties (i.e. cotman watercolors) but they're still a bit pricey. I don't trust Daler-Rowney paints but they're graphite, charcoal and ink supplies are good enough for college work. Paper: Walmart carries Canson paper and I highly recommend it (sometimes it's cheaper there than at Blick art store). That was and still kind of is my go-to drawing, sketching paper. Strathmore is pricier but they have different series, some with lower prices. Both have recycled options. Copy-paper. While it might not be archival it's useful for so many things, and you can always spray a drawing with a fixative spray. Croquis-paper from Daiso Pens: Ballpoint pen (any non-gel rollerball, Bic is really common). Take your pic of a brand. I got a pack of 50 recycled bic pens for under 10 bucks at Staples. They are a sketching and emergency art staple!Use them for sketching, doodling, writing, portraits, realism, graffiti, calligraphy whatever you want! They're just like a more permanent pencil with similar degrees of line variation, shading and layering capabilities. G-2 series gel/ballpoint pens Uniball and Uniball signo varieties. Signo types are waterproof when dry Pentel (pens, brushpens, lots of variety) Pilot and Pilot Technica Zebra brush pens and regular pens (can be found at daiso sometimes) and Zebra Sarasa (sp?) Brushes: Princeton always has a student variety of brushes (oil, acrylic, watercolor etc.) and I love them. They have some nice springy synthetic brushes. They have a wide price range to choose from as well. Princeton Art and Co. Real Value tm brush packs are amazing. They're good quality, usually not over $16 (us), and you get multiple brushes up to maybe a size 6. (I have some for testing out different mediums in case I wreck them). Royal & Langnickel and Loew-Cornell brushes and pens have been horrible for me, but Royal & Langnickel has newer synthetic brush packs for school that look decent. Artist loft brushes are okay, low bristle shed. Craft and other paints: Liquitex has cheaper varieties, but still great coverage. Tulip paints (fabric ) will forever be a fun time for me. Apple Barrel from micheals is okay. I hate Folkart, but people seem to like that brand for non-painting or variety crafts. Blick brand or Blick Essentials: Blick has some good, standard quality supplies for relatively cheap prices. If you're making the jump from the really cheap brands and want to test the waters, I highly recommend them as the middle man. A majority of their art items are at least university grade. Arteza: You've seen the ads, and the review videos, we all have. They have some great paper and painting supplies, not gonna lie. They're pricier than the cheaper options I've listed, but they're still below Professional and even have Uni or Artist quality supplies. ( it is 3am and I was on a roll. Hope anyone enjoys)
Excellent point! People should shop where they are able, and others should mind their business. Art can be therapeutic and should be enjoyable. Go on and get some Walmart art supplies and enjoy them!
I live in a small town. I remember when Walmart decided to build their store here, I was really excited! And then I saw what happened to our local businesses and was instantly bitter. Unfortunately, now that all the smaller shops are gone, they're pretty much the only place left to go to.
Any time this topic comes up, I remember my art supplies as a kid: The pencils I was already using for school, and printer paper my mom brought home from work. (This is back when printer paper wasn't single sheet but was sort of accordion folded with little strips on the sides lol) I promise to anyone reading this, you can make art on the cheap. Save up and buy the more expensive stuff down the line when you can, but for now, don't let your budget stop you from creating!
That is almost my identical situation as a kid! I used pens and pencils that I was given by the school and I recycled used paper from where my godmother used to work! The paper wasn’t gross or anything, it just had informational text on it but it didn’t necessarily need to be shredded. So that paper and a few staples became my sketchbooks! I don’t think I had a real sketchbook until I was a pre-teen.
@@emilyartful Same here! I had received sketchbooks around highschool as gifts, maybe when my family realized I was serious about drawing as a hobby. I didn't start regularly buying myself sketchbooks until I was out of college. I'm glad videos like this are getting online so people know they don't need to break the bank!
Man you got me all choked up in the beginning of this video. I grew up in a low income family and I really appreciated that rant 🥰 I just wish someone told me that when I was younger.
I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who puts every item in the cart in a gentle Baby Bird manner. As for where to go next all I can think of is Target because whenever I go there I specifically avoid that section because my brother is the one that drives and I don't want to leave him waiting on me for an hour or risk getting separated from him (he gets bored, huffy and wanders off when I take too long).
I love how you pat all the art supplies when putting it in the cart :D it's like tucking a kid to sleep. Really appreciate the disclaimer at the beginning. I didn't realized that there were others who might have not enjoy the big box shopping.
One of my favorite sketchbooks isn't even in the art department, it's usually in the office stuff where you buy a ton of the basic kids craft stuff like posters and kids markers. It's less that $2, small for travel, custom cover slots and has 70 pages. The only issue is a little bleeding if I use markers and some pens but I just a spare sheet underneath. It's the pen + gear Walmart brand. It's pretty good.
I'd love a dollar store version of this. I've found some decent stuff through trial and error. Some things were unusable to me (like pencil crayons) while others were more manageable, albeit with more effort than with top brands (like pens for lineart), but I got good results
Thanks for addressing the shaming at shopping at larger retails. That kind of thing is super classist. I'd buy and try handmade items from small businesses and etsy sellers if I could but I'm struggling so hard especially in the pandemic. I shop and buy cheaper alternatives for food, art and clothes where i can on many sites and being shamed for that makes me feel like i should be able to pull out money from nowhere to please those kinds of people.
Emily it's super great seeing you outside and even the non-art bits of the video (going through the cute kids clothes) was so fun, I hope you do more out and about videos in the future!
Thank you! I love shopping at Walmart once in a while for art supplies! They normally carry really cute wood pieces too for painting on! Obviously it's ideal to shop at a small business, but it's not always possible for everyone and I love that you are open about that!

My Wal-Mart sells both prisma color premier 12ct pencils and fabercastel polychromos pencils but you have to get lucky enough for them to not be sold out since the art supplies section is small when it comes to non sewing supplies and the same products at our local craftstores are 3x the price so most artists/hobbyists in our area buy their pencils and other supplies from Wal-Mart
thank you for giving that disclaimer! although it does suck that you had to explain everything thoroughly since a lot of people don't stop and think about other people's financial situations. as an artist who almost entirely uses supplies from walmart and only goes to michaels when there's a hefty coupon on the email list, it sucks to see people who think they're superior for shaming others for shopping at walmart. thank you for making this video, i love when people spread the message that less expensive doesn't necessarily mean cheap quality!!
Same here, really cheap paint and tons of bottles of glitter, except wallmart here dont even offer sketchbooks, only the normal notebooks for schools and basic pencils
I'm sorry you had those experiences, would you like it if I gave you some recommendations for cheaper art supplies that work? For example, something I have gotten at walmart, as well as staples, are the gray uniball pens with a clip on the lid. They are very inexpensive, and they work well for drawing. They do bleed if you use alcohol markers over them, but I often like to take advantage of that for the sake of shading. If you do it just right, you can blend a little bit of the blood ink a little bit to get a good enough shadow. It depends what you're doing, and it does take a bit of practice, but you tend to pick it up pretty quickly, especially if you are using brush tip alcohol markers. By the way, the cheapest alcohol markers I know of that are still decent quality, are the ohuhu brush tip alcohol markers. Although, don't make the same mistake I did, ordering from Amazon accidentally a set that was bullet nibbed, which is a completely different experience when coloring and blending. Just make sure to double check that it's for sure I'll call Marker and brush tip before you order off of their website or amazon. To help you understand how an expensive they are compared to copic, I got a set of 80 markers for I think $60. Considering the fact that copic oftentimes goes for $48 for 12 markers, this is a bargain.
Have bought arts and crafts supplies at Walmart many times. I was surprised to find that Walmart carries Daler - Rowney tube acrylics and brushes. D-R has been around many many years. If I remember right, this product is make in the U.K. and is excellent quality. There are lots of things for arts and crafts you can get get at Walmart IF you learn where to look. Products aren't always where you'd expect them to be. I've learned by looking, where I can find what I'm looking for. What you have to watch for is periodically Walmart changes things around. Yes there is a method to the madness and it works. I've found that though things are changed, they're still in the original general area, and some departments never change.
Canton is kind of expensive in my opinion then again I am a very broke artist. But I have to say it is the best paper I have ever used like the mixed media is all I use for my comic
I pretty much just have a hoard of supplies I've collected over time, most of which I've "borrowed" from my mom (she's cool with it. It's stuff she normally doesn't use, so she lets me have it), or have received as gifts. The only thing I typically end up buying myself is just my sketch books and drawing pencils. I also make sure to take care of my stuff, so a lot of my stuff I've had for a couple of years and is still great
As a former elementary art teacher, I never liked any form of washable art supplies. Kids are discerning consumers and they could absolutely tell the difference. For grade k thru 1, washable was okay, but any older and they wanted the "real" deal.
I just found your channel through all this mess. I just wanna say your an amazing person and an amazing mother🥰. Your so fucking talented also. I hope nothing but the BEST for you!
This video is so helpful for artists who wants to try out art but isn't really too sure about it so they need cheaper alternatives, THAT IS STILL GOOD and high quality.
100% ride or die for the canson mixed media sketchbooks. ive been using them for probably 7 or so years now and i legit cannot stand using any other kind of sketchbook. i recommend getting them in different sizes too, i like using the really itty bitty ones for travel sketching and the size up from that for my standard sketchbook needs. theyre very commonly going on sale or in clearance sections at my walmart and micheal's so always keep a lookout!!!
I think the real serious question is: did you get the cash register?? haha. but I am one of those po' folks who has to buy walmart art supplies. I really like those sketch books.
Carson sketch books are actually a really good brand and if you have a michles its useally buy 1 get 20% or soemthing. Also the artist loft brand is pretty good in terms of cheap art supplies. I tend to buy stuff in that brand to test out a new miduem.
about your disclaimer, something else a lot of people don't realize is that in a lot of small towns walmart or amazon might be your only option to buy art supplies in your town. when i was a kid all i had was walmart/dollar general, and if i wanted to go to an art store the closest one was hobby lobby about 30 minutes away. it's terrible what these big corporations have done to local economies but there are plenty poor areas where they have already done their damage.
I love Emily so much.. she's helped me in a lot of ways with my art. She's calming and just funny and a sweet heart. Never give up Emily you'll go far I can feel it 💖
This is awesome!! Thanks for doing this video and thanks for the gentle reminder, that not everyone can afford the more expensive art supplies (especially now with everything that has happened) I have been trying to teach myself how to use watercolour. I almost quit trying because I purchased a fairly expensive set of student grade watercolour pans and was very unhappy with them. Nothing I painted turned out and the end result was without fail flat and chalky looking. I thought it was my fault. Then I saw your video where you talked about the Prang watercolours and decided to give them a try. I loved them and was much happier with what I have been able to create with the Prang set. I even recommended them to my best friend when she also decided to give watercolours a try.

Can I suggest creating prints I love buying unique art from artists I love and hanging them in my room, I would really love to have some prints of your work
As an artist who also works at Walmart, I can honestly say there are worse options out there! Just stay away from the shitty craft kits!
Ugh, I hate those. Their the crappy birthday presents you’re friends or family get when they hear you are an artist 🤦♂️
Some of those craft kits have really good oil pastels
I loved her

I love walmart
Its the best time to get everything for school as well. They sell like notebooks for 10 cents so you KNOW its a battle that whole month of August lol
Well in the us but y’a they get pretty cheap

Awh, thank you! Honestly, the most important thing I learned about parenting is to demonstrate good behaviors so your child will mirror those same behaviors. I respect his space and his belongings and he respects mine and others’. He’s got a good understanding of boundaries in that way, so he knows what’s communal property in our home and what isn’t.
Crayola very accessible in UK too

I don’t think I have ever seen crayola outside of English speaking countries. In Germany, it is more common to find staedler or Farber-Castell. I think France has more BIC products. I do imagine that a lot of countries basically have their own products.

ALSO while I’m at it three other stores that deserve honorable mentions:
Five below: I’ve gotten several of my sketchbooks from there, as well as two different sets of alcohol markers, plenty of pencils, markers, pens, gel pens, etc in their art section. They also have paints but I haven’t tried them yet as of this comment
Ross: I know, I know, a discount clothing store having art supplies?
As someone that's not from the US and has never seen a walmart, i never knew they had so much art stuff!
Same... And according to other comments it even varies from one Walmart to another
walmart has everything from food, to electronics, to toys, to hardware stuff it's just the amount of each thing that varies in walmart lol
Shame shame shame. You sound like a four year old. Write like an ADULT.
Wow how did you do that? Don't college usually for exams people to buy the expensive stuff? Or did they let you chose
that's super cool but super surprising too! i don't think I have heard of college art professors/instructors being cool with students using materials that are not recommended by them which are usually quite pricey but I suppose it's always possible to ask or just be resourceful. glad to here it worked out for you, warm wishes!

Kohana They have that on their online store.

For anyone wanting some more ideas relating to what she said, lemme info barf some supply knowledge here:
Crayola:
You can do watercolor washes using the classic chubby crayola markers. Color them onto a palette or glass/waxed plate and mix some water in.
The semi-soft tips of thick crayola markers are great for practicing lettering, calligraphy and line weight. I'm a caricature artist and we use them to do practice sketches and lettering sometimes. (They are not lightfast though and will get bleached by prolonged exposure to light)
Crazyart:
At least it's not roseart! Crazyart markers a pretty good cheaper version of crayola and they have some vibrant colors. You can do watercolor thing with them too.
Prang and Bienfang:
Two watercolors that are about the same as crayola, though prang is probably a bit nicer.
Proart:
Not as popular or as cheap as crayola, but cheaper than the top brands. They have some great woodless pencils (color and graphite).
Artist Loft:
Overall they're supplies are pretty good (haven't tried they're acrylic). Their watercolor pencils are cheap but good quality. They have some solid canvas panels if you want to experiment with oil/acrylic painting for cheap. It's a good option between Crayola and student or even Uni grade supplies.
The classic art kits:
We all know those all-in-one art kits either in plastic or wood boxes.
Student/Scholar versions of more expansive brands:
Derwent, Prismacolor ("Prismacolor Scholar"), Faber Castell, Staedtler, Daler -Rowney and Liquitex all have a student or 'scholastic' versions of they're supplies. Winsor and Newton has university varieties (i.e. cotman watercolors) but they're still a bit pricey. I don't trust Daler-Rowney paints but they're graphite, charcoal and ink supplies are good enough for college work.
Paper:
Walmart carries Canson paper and I highly recommend it (sometimes it's cheaper there than at Blick art store). That was and still kind of is my go-to drawing, sketching paper. Strathmore is pricier but they have different series, some with lower prices. Both have recycled options.
Copy-paper. While it might not be archival it's useful for so many things, and you can always spray a drawing with a fixative spray.
Croquis-paper from Daiso
Pens:
Ballpoint pen (any non-gel rollerball, Bic is really common).
G-2 series gel/ballpoint pens
Uniball and Uniball signo varieties. Signo types are waterproof when dry
Pentel (pens, brushpens, lots of variety)
Pilot and Pilot Technica
Zebra brush pens and regular pens (can be found at daiso sometimes) and Zebra Sarasa (sp?)
Brushes:
Princeton always has a student variety of brushes (oil, acrylic, watercolor etc.) and I love them.
Craft and other paints:
Liquitex has cheaper varieties, but still great coverage. Tulip paints (fabric ) will forever be a fun time for me. Apple Barrel from micheals is okay. I hate Folkart, but people seem to like that brand for non-painting or variety crafts.
Blick brand or Blick Essentials:
Blick has some good, standard quality supplies for relatively cheap prices. If you're making the jump from the really cheap brands and want to test the waters, I highly recommend them as the middle man. A majority of their art items are at least university grade.
Arteza:
You've seen the ads, and the review videos, we all have.
I can relate to feeling all the soft fabrics in any store. Literally me every time I go into any store.

It's pretty good.
emily getting distracted for things for her kids is so cute
Yea!
more videos with the kiddos please- i absolutely ADORE them- Such cutiessss!!!
If you wanna get started drawing for free go down to your local ikea, grab a golf pencil and one of those little notebooks, and walk out- boom
ballpoint pen and newspapers white edge or the blank pages in the books. Thats what I started with
@@iramage2235 or over the words- I always find that really beautiful
My local ikea is hours away
@Blank oh yeah, thats the only thing they’re really there for- like, what else would they be for?
3:33 I love the little pat she gives the supplies
I'd love a dollar store version of this. I've found some decent stuff through trial and error. Some things were unusable to me (like pencil crayons) while others were more manageable, albeit with more effort than with top brands (like pens for lineart), but I got good results
Thankyou for commenting on why people shop and big corporation, its not always a matter of choice. We do the best we can with what we have.
Emily it's super great seeing you outside and even the non-art bits of the video (going through the cute kids clothes) was so fun, I hope you do more out and about videos in the future!
also worthwhile is getting your coloring supplies during back to school sales when its much cheaper
Thank you! I love shopping at Walmart once in a while for art supplies! They normally carry really cute wood pieces too for painting on! Obviously it's ideal to shop at a small business, but it's not always possible for everyone and I love that you are open about that!
Good looking out hunting for bargains for aspiring artists. 💜 We love to see it
Thank you, for sticking up for us. I don't even have wallmart, and my family never had the money to buy expensive supplies.
I’m so excited for this!
Thank you for not shaming the underprivileged. I used to get teased for shopping at kmart when I was younger.
Emily, you truly are an inspiration to me and my daughter. We love your artwork and your style and we watch every single video you post, together. It beings us closer together and we bond over our artwork and your videos. I just wanted to tell you that and to say thank you for being real, and for just being you. I am really glad that you and Mr. Artful, Wiggy and Beanie are feeling better from the covid scare. My family was sending positive and healing vines to you guys the while way through. So again, thank you so much for being the amazing, dark(in a good way), creative and real person that you are. You really do inspire so many people and personally my daughter and I both look up to you, your art and your beautiful family. Have an amazing day and keep making videos and being your real ass self. Much love and respect.
Hey, I’m a Carla May too! I hope you love your name as much as I do. My daughter and I love this channel too.
@@uniquewhimsy622 I love my name and always have....my mother named me after my father, his name is Karl. He was murdered in 2013 and my name became even more important to me. I am glad you love your name also! I feel that our names are a very important part of who we are and I have given my children meaningful names aswell.
Much love and respect to you and your family
💜 Karla Mae
@@karlamae7700 I am sorry to hear about your father’s death, that’s terrible. I was also named after my father, his middle name is Carl and my mom’s middle name was May. I was the last of their 5 kids and the most like our parents. Oddly, in my life I’ve met many Carla’s who hate their (our) name and even go so far as to change it. My name suits me very well since it means strong warrior woman. 😊
I've been having a really bad day and this really helped to just get my mind off of what had happened
I hope today is a better day
God I love you swear like an a real person. Feels my soul every time you do. It's real.
You don't need a lot of money to make great art
You just need a lot of talent
...and work ethics loaded with persistency.
@@lili721 agreed! Work ethic > talent any day
thank you for giving that disclaimer! although it does suck that you had to explain everything thoroughly since a lot of people don't stop and think about other people's financial situations. as an artist who almost entirely uses supplies from walmart and only goes to michaels when there's a hefty coupon on the email list, it sucks to see people who think they're superior for shaming others for shopping at walmart. thank you for making this video, i love when people spread the message that less expensive doesn't necessarily mean cheap quality!!
The art supplies at my Walmart already suck😃 All I got is low quality paint, bottles of glitter, and a few types sketchbooks✋🏾😔😒
I dont even have walmart on my city
@@overwhelmedren6357 damn. That sucks
@@otakumangastudios3617 thanks👍🏾
The ""art stores"" here where I live have less art supplies than walmart and are more expensive. Canson XL paper is considered expensive lmao
Walmart is my favorite place to shop for painting supplies because how cheap it is. THE QUALITY IS STILL AMAZING!!
'Don't touch my sh*t!' This. This...THIS!!! *small voice* I rly don't like ppl touching my sh*t...thank you for expressing that you also get this, Em!
Same!!
Same here, I'm a Taurus and we have a "Don't touch, breathe on, borrow and just basically stay away from my shit!"
Please do a dollar store version of this. please! Also I love you and your art... you have been a huge inspiration
Aww yiss, ill watch this with my morning coffee when it premieres ☕
My Walmart actually has micron fine liners and the prisma color pencils. Which i thought was pretty cool
Girl, my art career started with dollar store sketchbooks and Rose Art colored pencils 🤣 Always love your uploads!
Loved the Disclaimer... not everyone can afford expensive, good quality stuff for various reasons. Great video!!! Thanks for sharing.
I PREFER the cheaper art supplies personally!! Just keep looking until your find the supplies that best suit your unique style NO MATTER the price
I love purchasing bulk paint brushes from Walmart. My local Walmart stepped up the art supplies and extended the aisle too. I was impressed.
I might use Apple barrel 50c paint, and 3 dollar brushes, but I can still make good artwork 😌😌😌
Wiggy is so adorable, and your drawing is awesome! Love the red pop. Great video.❤️🎨
Walmart and Michaels are my go to's and plus Walmart carries canson sketchbooks and watercolor paper and your so cute uwu
Try target next also awesome video as always 🥰
I picked up some watercolor stuff at a local store Ocean State Job Lot. Got watercolors, paper, brushes and some paint holder all for 13.00. :)
When you added the red for the rosy cheeks and the little neon styled hearts it really made it! So cute!
about your disclaimer, something else a lot of people don't realize is that in a lot of small towns walmart or amazon might be your only option to buy art supplies in your town. when i was a kid all i had was walmart/dollar general, and if i wanted to go to an art store the closest one was hobby lobby about 30 minutes away. it's terrible what these big corporations have done to local economies but there are plenty poor areas where they have already done their damage.
As an artist, your best and most valuable resource is yourself :) skill and talent are what makes the great art, the supplies just help out.
being so early to an emily artful video is a whole other feeling.
This is so adorable, the artworks are amazing, and that paper towel was an artwork in itself.
Me who lives in the uk and has A asda: ☺️💅
I'm glad I'm not the only one who just gets mesmerized by the softness of the blankets 😂
I love that they make kids' toys that are cleaning supplies. Absolute genius.
those brushes WILL hold their shape as I've had mine for like 6 yrs. / used often / still going strong!
I love Emily so much.. she's helped me in a lot of ways with my art. She's calming and just funny and a sweet heart. Never give up Emily you'll go far I can feel it 💖
This is awesome!! Thanks for doing this video and thanks for the gentle reminder, that not everyone can afford the more expensive art supplies (especially now with everything that has happened)
I have been trying to teach myself how to use watercolour.
This was so enjoyable to watch and both pieces came out fantastic. I for one am a HUGE fan of Canson XL Mixed Media Paper. I LOVE the stuff.
Oh my God every time the mom comes out of Emily it's so cute! this video is amazing.
