It’s so nice to hear a review of supplies with an attitude. Most of the artist channels are just too nice. They can’t criticize anything without 15 disclaimers first, it drives me nuts. You’re funny, keep it up!
Lol. That's exactly how I feel! Thank you April, I'll be sure to keep it going.
This video is a masterpiece! The amount of sass throughout, your face at the phone ding, the whole pencil lead rant and the impromptu reflected studio tour. The smaller Pete that pops up. A true masterpiece 🤌🏼👏🏽
Thank you, Becky! I'm glad you liked it. It was a fun one to make.
Did you find out anything about the cotton "duck" ,gosh you made me laugh. I really needed that laugh and now I am intrigued at how something can be made of cotton duck. Lol
They say it's just a class or type for the cotton canvas, but I'm skeptical. 😂 Glad I could make you laugh.
@@IllustrationsByPete I really appreciated that full on belly laugh, you actually looked totally baffled and disconcerted at the fact any ducks could've been hurt to make that canvas, I am still giggling. I am getting all notifications now. Thank you for your humorous take on art supplies, I thoroughly enjoyed your candour and sense of humour. *virtual hug*
Thank you! I appreciate the support. More laughs to come.
Oh and "I don't mean to obsess over it but I think that just ruined my life" killed me. I'm stealing that to use all the time 😂😂😂
😂
"you're gonna throw your shoulder out!" 🤣 You are hilarious
Glad I could make you smile. 🙂
Duck is a cotton fiber, heavier than broadcloth* and lighter than canvas. It is a woven fiber and the cloth can be smooth or rough. I use t for outdoor pillows and for toddler jeans for grandkids (comes in many colors). Sometimes it’s used for sails and lean-to’s. My theory is that sailors named it when they’d lower the boom and sails would flap and they would yell: DUCK!!! (That’s just IMHO.)
*no, not cotton made of or just for broads… *shhh*
Lol. I like your theory.
i love your theory but "duck" in this case derives from the dutch word "doek", i do like your version better tho xD edit: "doek" simply means cloth
Oh, that's boring. I like Anna's idea better. Lol.
@@IllustrationsByPete That’s because Anna was a sailor: US Navy, Viet Nam Era
Thank you for your service, Anna. 🇺🇲
Thank you for this video. I throughly enjoyed it 😂. I really appreciate your pointing out that the Hobby Lobby canvass’s are Duck Cloth! So here’s some information for you, which you probably already know…… these canvases may not be so “cheap”. ( I wonder if it’s called duck cloth because a waterproofing has been applied to one side? Remember the old saying, …..like water off a duck’s back.)
“Canvas comes in two forms: plain canvas and duck canvas. Duck canvas gets its name from the Dutch word, doek, which means cloth, and duck fabric is a heavy-duty cotton fabric. Duck cloth is a type of canvas, and duck and canvas can be used for similar projects, depending on the weight and strength of textile needed. Duck is usually even more sturdy and holds shape better than standard canvas.
Both canvas and duck are plain-woven fabrics, but there are a few differences between them:
Duck is more tightly woven than standard canvas.
Duck also has a classification system, established in the 1920s. Duck is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the lightest fabric and 1 being the heaviest.
Duck is made only from cotton, hence it is sometimes referred to as cotton duck canvas or cotton duck fabric.
That makes sense. I can definitely tell the fibers are tighter together. It seems very smooth. Thanks for the info! 🙂
I’m laughing so hard with the “do ducks grow cotton”. Cotton duck is a cloth, I’m cracking up, Pete. Duck is just a fabric…I have tears in my eyes… YOU are so funny…
😂
@@IllustrationsByPete😂 duck is a heavyweight linen or cotton fabric with a regular un-twilled weave, the kind of thing sails are made from. Same with duck tape, which has a woven fabric as reinforcement. It comes from a Dutch word for the same.
Thanks for the info. 👍🏻 I just enjoy making people smile.
Furrel squir! 😂😂😂 you just made my day! Thank you for demystifying brushes for me.
I have to admit, that made me laugh for a good 5 min when I was editing. 😂
@@IllustrationsByPete Yeah, I know how easy it is to get my twist tongued…
@@IllustrationsByPete It’s called “spoonerism” 🤗 a verbal error in which a speaker accidentally transposes the initial sounds or letters of two or more words, often to humorous effect 🤗 Belly jeans! Bunny phone!
All in good fun. 🙂
😂😂😂 Guilty! I ventured from graphite drawing to inexpensive Reeves watercolor on a whim many many moons ago and I used my strathmore bristol smooth paper for many pieces before I knew there was a paper dedicated to watercolor. Hey! We all start somewhere ❤
I tooo love my waterbrushes. I even enjoy some of the more inexpensive, heavier flowing waterbrushes that most people would toss for my larger washes...soo convenient.
I recently discovered your channel and love your snarky humor!
Keep the videos coming!
Toni
Thank you Toni! I'm glad you enjoyed this and thanks for sharing. We all do weird stuff sometimes. 🙂
Found myself laughing and nodding my head up and down for the entire length of the video. I've got a new favorite TH-camr.
Thank you! Glad I could make you laugh. 🙂
I have never watched an art video that made me laugh out loud throughout! And the most spontaneous and original studio tour I have ever seen! Thank you for this! P.S. : I'll be on a lookout for cotton ducks from now on! :))))
Lol. Thank you Simona! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
Your a joy to watch fun and funny thanks!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
You should paint some ducks on that cotton duck....wait, can cotton ducks fly? Too much quack. 😂😂😂😂 best art video I have ever seen. I needed those laughs, keep it up!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
This video popped up today and I'm so glad it did!😂😅🤣 Best video ever!
Thank you, Cyndi! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Such a fun video to watch! What a pleasant surprise. You are an amazing entertainer.
Thank you Bella! I appreciate that. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
You are awesome. I will be watching a lot more of your videos. No mystique, no "must-dos." Just practical advice with attitude. Perfect.
Thank you Jennifer! I'm glad you enjoyed this.
I continue to enjoy every video....always learn something, have some laughs, and expand my art supply horizons. But I'm waiting for the merch line......I'd like a "don't worry about that" shirt please😅
😂 I can make that happen.
Love the reflective tour of the office!
Not too revealing and yet very revealing. Lol.
You're refreshing! I like you. You're funny AND knowledgeable. You have a new subscriber.
Thank you and welcome to the channel! I'm just trying to encourage people and help them smile. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete You did that, for sure.
Great vid, Pete!! That throw-your-shoulder-out made this retired Trauma ICU nurse bust a gut!!!! I never had a patient with that mode of injury, but ya I can see it;) A lot of great information/reviews here! I have the Derwent Graphitint Paint Pan Pocket Set (that's wordy...), and it's fantastic! Agreed. I use Daniel Smith watercolors and found you by searching for best watercolor palette. THAT was another great vid! New subscriber and going to binge when I'm finished painting today. Oh. And the impromptu studio tour was too much fun! Your wife sounds like a gem!!
Thank you Juudit! I'm glad you enjoyed these. Welcome to the channel. She is an amazing woman. 🙂
Thank you for the laughs. You have a new subscriber, maybe more as I just shared this video with some artist friends & family.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Welcome to the channel! 🙂
Just found your channel 🎉 I too use M Graham Tit White gouache with my watercolor. 🎉 My new favorite semi transparent love is the Kuratake Gansi Tambi watercolor! A hybrid that isn't. Dark to light, light to dark, back and forth, wonderfulness! Thanks for sharing ☺️
Welcome to the channel! I need to try those Gansi paints. They look wonderful. 👍🏻
@@IllustrationsByPete try a 12 set for cheap!
@@IllustrationsByPete I also forgot to say that I did laugh out loud a few times and that's not easy to do! Thanks 👍
Glad I could make you smile. 🙂
Great idea for dog paintings Pete. Great idea
Thank you for the paper towel tip 🙏🏽
Glad I could help. 🙂
Dude what the duck 🦆!
I loved this video, thanks for the laughs and also the material recommendations. Of all the things you mentioned I’m really fond of Daniel Smith’s watercolors, and those buttery smooth Derwent Drawing pencils. Both are INCREDIBLE and sometimes I just find myself thinking up stuff to draw just so I can use those again.
Thanks man! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yes between those paints and those pencils I could keep myself busy for the next 5 or so years.
I really enjoyed this. I learned about supplies not used and love your affect👍🏼☺️
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
"Am I painting on a duck" I've been watching a lot ofnyour videos lately but after this I have to subscribe now.
😂 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Welcome to the channel! 🙂
Just found you and love the good info you're putting out as well as your humor!
Thank you Jenny! Welcome to the channel. I enjoy making people smile. 🙂
Pete, you have guitars…I played and sung for a living for a lot of years…I have a Martin D-35 12 string I bought new in 1971…Have about three others but that one is my favorite. I can’t play anymore because of the arthritis in my hands. I will sing still if someone else plays. LOL…. I told you I think we have a relative somewhere in the woodpile…as we said down south. 😂
That could be. Sorry to hear that. I usually buy good, solid, cheap guitars and make them into what I want. I have a Fender Gemini II acoustic that was given to me as a child by my uncle, an Ibanez GIO, a Squier Cyclone, a Squire Deluxe Strat, and a Squire Tele Deluxe. The only one I bought was the strat, all the others were gifts from my wife. I wish I had more time to play but I've been so busy with this channel that it's hard to find time. I do when I have time though.
Duck is a weave of fabric. The fibers are bigger than quilting cotton.
😂 I got it now. Thank you Mary. 🙂
I love water brushes
Me too! It was an amazing idea and I use them more than anything.
Thanks, Pete. You're very funny and great advice! I concur on almost everything! (I have yet to try some of the things.
Thank you Kate! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
All infor appreciated! Love the "pretzels" :D And, thanks for the indirect studio tour! lol Cotton ducks. :D Awesome!
Thanks Carmen! Glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
Way to keep it real! Loved all the humor throughout!! Great recommendations
Glad you enjoyed it, Cherice! Thank you. 🙂
Lmmfao @ pencil drawing rant. Too funny. It's even funnier because I am one of those ppl who will spend hours preparing my pencils and charcoals. Too funny
You do you buddy. I get that for some people it's more of a ritual to get into the head space to create. Whatever works. 👍🏻
I too like daniel smith. Only because I have an affinity for classic academic art. Thus I prefer a vibrant yet muted color. Ds offers these older pigment options vibrant enough that layering isn't required. Unlike schmincke. Which I also love, but have far less character than ds. Too bad they cost so much lol
I agree, they are the best in my book.
Very interesting, thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Your rant about drawing with your wrist got a like and subscribe. Thank you!!! I refuse to draw with my shoulder.
Lol! Thank you, Cara! Who does that? 🙂
You can pick up furrel squir by keeping a hawk eye out for road kill. Thanks probably not funny but it’s 6:30 in the morning where I am.
It's funny enough. 😂
Cotton Duck takes its name from the Dutch word doek for 'cloth'. ;)
Thank you for that information. I appreciate it.
Just found your channel and I love it. Love most of the products you've shown but I can't seem to make a mechanical pencil stop breaking on me so Ì prefer Blackwing pencils. Love the Poscas. Have a great week.
Hello Machelle, welcome to the channel. The black wing is a pencil I've never tried. I think it's equivalent to a 3B but that's just what I've heard. I hope to hear from you again soon. You have a great week too!
Duck as in duck cloth
🙂 I got it now.
tools ii love too... been on a sketchbook binge...Stonehenge in 2025...ty.
I feel like I'm always on a sketchbook binge. 😂
Just found your channel! I'll have to binge later as your videos look fun. I also use the tiny magnets, but I put them in the pan before I fill it with paint. Not sure if this is good or bad, I like using them that way though.
Sketching pretzel lolololo
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I try to keep it light. If it works for you I would keep doing it your way. If it isn't broken, it doesn't need to be fixed. Thanks for watching!
Didn't know jon favreau did art. Love it!
😂🤣😂 Now you know. Thanks man.
Thanks
Thank you.
SKETCHING PRETZELS!!!!😂😂😂😂 Man, these videos just keep getting better n' better... Particularly enjoyed the wrasslin' reference!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Lol. Not many people will get that reference. Glad you're enjoying these.
OMG this cracked me up!
Glad it made you smile Lindsey! 🙂
😂 omg couldn't stop laughing, now we All need to know about this duck thing
Lol. Glad I could make you laugh. 🙂
thank you! :)
🙂
The table issue is very easily solved with a large craft mat or cutting mat.
Thank you for the tip. That will work for a normal person but I am very quirky. The only texture that would work for me is a piece of hardwood or drawing board material because of the texture. It would have to be the size of the desk because I don't like feeling the edge of the material on my arms. And after all that I don't like the way it looks unless it was a very dark gray color because that's what I like for the background of the videos. However, if I was normal, this would solve the problem. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete Well you definitely have a point Pete as you are trying to teach others how not to stifle their creativity by giving your tips yet you are stifling your own creativity by - in your own words - being quirky. Each to their own I guess. :O)
I admit, that is a bit hypocritical of me. It's ok, I can live with it. It is a good solution though. I appreciate the tip.
Speaking about matte acrylics, have you tried Turner? They are next level matte, not not-glossy as Liquitex, but matte, like velvet, black is like a black hole
I definitely need to try them. I've been eyeing them for a couple years but never pulled the trigger. Thank you for the suggestion.
Don’t worry about how you count-us scifi fans count 1-2-3-many, because our authors’s trilogies turn out to be more than 3… *snicker*.
This was fun and informative. Thanks!
Lol. Thank you Anna. I'm glad you enjoyed this.
*Wow* you really are quick! And I really enjoy your videos!
Thank you Anna. I really enjoy that you enjoy them. 🙂
Hilarious. I have just subscribed
Thank you! I'm glad I could make you smile. 🙂
Brilliant.
Thank you, Judy! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Lovely video! Especially loved your little rant about how others think an artist should draw! LOL. Just draw the way you want to draw, right?!!!
Thank you. Yes, however you want. Glad you enjoyed it!
Bravo !! Ty
Glad you enjoyed it, Patricia! 🙂
It's a bad name choice for a fabric. :) Cotton duck is a type of cotton fabric.
Thanks for a very entertaining video.
Lol. I finally found out. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
🤣cotton duck!
🙂
New subbie! I think your awsome!
Thank you Nikkie! I think you're awesome too!
this was fucking hilarious and infornative
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
I totally get your wife's cloffice
She loves it. 👍🏻
I don’t like crap either 😊. Where did you purchase your wooden pencil drawers?
I think I got those from Amazon. It was back when I was living in the middle of the woods so I didn't have many options.
@@IllustrationsByPete Thank you!
No problem. 🙂
I just found you. You are better than Colbert. And I love Colbert. I’m going to sub subscribe and go to your most resent and comment. Thank you for the laughs. The artist comedy.
I'm glad you enjoyed this. Welcome to the channel. Glad I could make you laugh. 🙂
You are hilarious
Thanks Veronica! Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
