Hades 360 Review, Mt. Olympus Gravity Group Wood Coaster | Is it Too Rough?

  • Hades 360 is the wild wood coaster at Mt. Olympus. This was the first coaster ever built by Gravity Group and it was upgraded in 2013 to include a corkscrew inversion and Timberliner trains. This is in addition to a layout that already included one of the best pre-lift sections, a giant drop, and two long underground tunnels. But is it now too rough?

    A world-class coaster at a bargain-bin park. This coaster is honestly amazing; it’s just a shame it wasn’t built at a park who has the resources and wherewithal to maintain it properly.

      I went to Mt. Olympus for the first time. I actually thought Zeus had more air time. Hades is faster though for sure and has crazier elements, but not much airtime after that first drop

      Yeah, I guess that's what you get when your tickets are $5 per person after paying the $35 parking fee.
      You can touch the trees on Pegasus, Cyclops, and Zeus. A general no-no in the coaster industry.
      The water park is included and it's awesome, but there are no formal changing rooms, just regular bathrooms you have to use to change in.
      They don't even enforce the no-hats policy.
      The ride operators go from ride to ride in the same shifts. That is ultra-rare.
      They didn't have mask mandates and they stayed open throughout 2020, which IMO is a good thing and rebellious in a good way, but perhaps not the majority general public opinion at the time even if it was my opinion.

    I think traditional wooden coasters have a height ceiling of between 100 and 120 feet. Anything bigger and they start to tear themselves apart. If you think about it, most wooden coasters taller are either Intamin prefabs, or RMC Topper Track models. Traditional wooden coasters over that height seem to always have roughness issues.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It also comes down to the park's willingness to do maintenance. Voyage is doing fine, but Holiday World has done so much trackwork on that one.

    • @Danrarbc
      @Danrarbc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CanobieCoaster I'd peg The Boss as a middle ground here. They do replace an extensive amount of boards and a good amount of track every single offseason, and early in a year it does ride significantly better than 'normal' - they even always have a couple pallets of wood on hand for spot replacements during a season. But there just isn't much time during a season for anything more than small TLC. So as the season reaches the heart of summer the roughness returns. If they replaced a larger percentage of track the way Holiday World does smoothness would definitely last longer but the park's maintenance team does try very hard to keep it from turning into a dumpster fire with the budget they're given.
      All of that experience with track work carries over to the other two woodies too. American Thunder is kept in great condition and Screamin' Eagle has no need for a Racer or Beast style retrack and they always have it running well. And it doesn't batter itself into a pulp by October despite being the second most intense woodie there.

    As much as people like the Timberliners, they’re 100% the reason this ride has so many issues. Other than the momentum issues, the lighter trains react to track imperfections more and bounce around. I rode in 2011 and while it was bumpy, it wasn’t half as bad as it is now.

    If I ask you what about the outward tunnel, Canobie Coaster would say:
    As you blaze through this tunnel, you navigate a small bunny hill, bank right, head over another bunny hill, traverse a 90 degree turn to the left, and navigate a step-up. All these elements occur in rapid-fire succesion and your body is tossed about like a ragdoll. The first two bunny offer some midly sustained floater airtime. Then the sudden changes of direction offer jolts of laterals because you can't brace for them, and the step-up gives a little pop of floater airtime. However, the tunnel is...
    A) the smoothest part of the ride.
    B) the roughest part of the ride.

  • @Danrarbc
    @Danrarbc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My biggest worry with a full conventional retrack is Mt Olympus' maintenance is dubious at best. While it would definitely help in the short term I don't have confidence that the park will replace bits of track and other components as needed over time to keep it in good condition. After all there are plenty of parks out there running older, even much older, woodies than this that have never received a large scale retrack.
    I'd prefer two (or three) other retrack options. They could opt for a Gravity Group precut retrack - which is supposed to last longer than standard wood track BUT you likely still have to be proactive with maintenance with that to keep it running well. The other option could be a Titan retrack, which would IMO be best for the park given their maintenance issues. Yes there's always a 208 RetraK option too but I suspect that costs more than Titan or GG Precut.

    I went to Olympus this weekend and I think is a good park for the price, I mean you have like 3 or 4 roller coasters and water parks. Hades 360 was a crazy experience, I agreed with the politic of the staff and the way that they work is bad, because you missing time waiting without reason 😮‍💨. But yeah I think hades 360 has a 8/10.

    I don't get how the biggest drop of any wooden coaster with singe bench trains (with the possible exception of Python in Bamboo Forest in China) is rougher than wooden coasters with bigger drops with non single bench trains. But I guess Hades 360 is rough! It's kind of a bucket list coaster for me, but not as much as 1: some of the coasters I've ridden; 2: Some of the coasters I plan to ride from May 29th though June 9th this year, 3: The Voyage, Fury 325 and Velocicoaster. Thanks for posting!

    I rode this only in 2019. The roughness was on the edge of what I could tolerate. Visiting on Tue-Wed, the line was always around 20 minutes, which was just enough time to recover, although because of the full-train rule, I did get a couple rerides, because they needed someone to stay on. This makes my overall top 25 with that experience. Hearing your review, I don't think I would like this ride nearly as much now. Something needs to be done to fix this, because that layout is far too good, unique, and interesting.
    It makes me wonder if the Timberliner trains could be part of the problem. The Gravity Group coasters that I've ridden with PTC trains run so much better, and they are my favorite 3 from the company. Mine Blower is unbearably rough now, and I have dropped it a lot in my rankings. Even Oscars Wacky Taxi & Kentucky Flyer have had some mildly rough spots in my experience.

    • @nuklear08
      @nuklear08 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're onto something. In my opinion, PTCs run better than Timberliners AND Millennium Flyers in terms of rider comfort (not talking about the ergonomics, but their ability to absorb vibrations with the heavier chassis and wooden passenger compartment). They may be worse for the track over time; that part is likely true. The fact that Holiday World kept trying Timberliners on Voyage and never made the switch tells us something. I suspect they just had to admit they rode worse than the PTCs.

    I hand built working model roller coasters. I built track & trains. Most "steelies" make their own trains. A few "woodies" made their trains, but usually went to a train manufacturer with specs. I'm sure Hades NEEDS to be re-profiled, but I also think the lighter trains "hunt" (Trying to find the tracks center line) My models would "hunt" a bit after they'd been on a 200 + mile travel on a trailer. It was sort of easy to straighten it out though. Hunting also tends to slow down a coaster as energy is wasted. Not sure If "weighting" the wheeled cars would help? While coasters are computer designed, there is still art + a little black magic that makes them tick. I too, was alarmed by chain snap. Why, no NO nylon roller there or better tensioner? This will surely wear the chain. Chains ain't cheap. It's either a Reinhold or Whitney chain. I bought Reinhold's (10' per chain) The most I ever used on a coaster was 30 feet!

    I think my first rides were either in 08 or 09, it was rough, but tolerable then. And it kept getting worse. I was actually on the first public train for the 360 revamp. The ride was about 60-70% retracked. The parts that were retracked were very smooth--making the sections that weren't extremely noticable. And it kept getting worse from there. It's been since 2015 I think since I rode it. I plan on making it back to the park this year--not really looking forward to pain. I love the ride's layout--it just needs Knoebel's levels of maintenance or something drastic for people to see how great this ride can be. Unfortunately, the park would rather buy more hotels than maintain their star attractions.

    So many people want this (and Mine Blower) to be retracked by GCI's Titan Track or RMC. But if anyone should do it, it should be Gravity Group themselves, since they recently introduced a smoother pre-cut track. Plus, it'll be easier maintenance-wise (since they only need Gravity Group for the entire coaster).

    What are your thoughts on Titan Track for the rough spots? I know that might be logistically difficult (though doable) in the tunnels.
    I also wonder what Titan Track on a Gravity Group would mean for the park in terms of ride maintenance for the GCI sections vs Gravity Group section. If RMC converts a coaster then they become the go to for maintenance assistance or updates (depending on the sale and contract.) When GCI retracked Ghostrider they became the commercial partner for that coaster (especially in light of CCI being defunct.) But would Gravity Group be responsible for any contractual obligations on a coaster that now bares sections of GCI Titan Track?

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd love seeing Titan track here. Not sure how that works for future maintenance though.

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Arrow Dynamics Inc. yes but sometimes companies will only guarantee a product if they have an exclusive maintenance contract. For example, it used to be the case that a car company could say that your car warranty was void if you had it fixed by a shop that wasn't owned by the manufacturer. That only recently changed by federal intervention. I wouldn't be surprised if most coaster manufacturers had similar contracts for coaster maintenance and repair. S&S honors the contracts that they bought out from Arrow when Arrow closed.
      It would be interesting to see how something like Titan Track would affect coasters built by manufactuters other than GCI if the park had an existing contract with the prior manufacturer.

    • @Danrarbc
      @Danrarbc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CanobieCoaster The cleanest thing contractually would be to use the new Gravity Group precut track on here.
      My biggest worry though is the park just plain doesn't do track maintenance so I'd worry about them getting more wood track - even that track is supposed to last longer. At the same time we don't know how Titan track holds up over time so maybe there's still a problem there.
      I'd probably trust the long term reliability of 208 RetraK in this park's hands the most - but it's also probably well outside their price range.

      I got my first rides on Mine Blower & Hades in 2019, and I would say that Hades was a little bit rougher, but both were barely tolerable for me. Now, on my late 2021 & early 2022 rides on Mine Blower, that thing is horribly rough, and I cannot even tolerate it anymore. I rode American Eagle on the same trip as riding Hades in 2019, and Hades was easily rougher. My Great American Scream Machine rides in late 2020 didn't feel that rough to me. A case of elite layout and forces but so rough it just brings it down a notch. Still a good woodie though if you’re willing to fight.

    I don't know which coaster I love more. Hades 360 or The Voyage at Holiday World.

      @CanobieCoaster I agree since it is longer. I just hate MCBR. I know they are necessary for some coasters, but I still don't like them.

    This ride looks like it could be a top ten coaster in the united states if it got a Ghostrider level retracking ngl.

    Is it rougher than Coaster Express? That was almost farcically rough in 2018

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought Coaster Express was worse.

    I haven’t been here yet but I have a feeling it’s roughness makes it fun and intense I’m not sure how this would be if it was smooth

      The layout is intense on its own.

    Waldameer should have GG come in and redo the road crossing on RFII to be a barrel roll like this one has

      The bunny hills on the road crossing are one of the ride's best spots already in my opinion.

    This coaster is fun and I didn't find it rough personally when I went, I went in 2019 maybe when you went it was a little rough

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was smoother in 2019 than 2021.
