Aye, that's the singular most important aspect for me now.... knowing how good the audio quality is. M2 haven't disappointed yet, but historically the Sega re-released/licensed machines have been super bad :(
Gear Seekers I'll give it 4 out of 5 compared to original hardware or Genesis Plus GX. It's not perfect but definitely not AtGames usual ear rape stuff. There's some sound lag, some games sound slightly different from original hardware or 100% accurate emulation but overall it's okay.
You need to go check out GameSack's video on it, he said there is audio delay, and the bass response is not up to pair compared to an original model 1. He also got broken controllers with his unit, and complained that some games need a 6 button controller included, and that when he tried some other 6 button USB genesis controllers they did not work for him.

That made me wonder too. There are so many little gifts left there for modders and hackers. Like a moving volume slider and place where you could put a 3.5mm jack...

The CRT filter looks so much better than what other Mini systems offer! It actually makes the image look kinda like what my KV-29X1E trinitron can do with RGB. Genesis truly does!
SEGA put all of their classics on Steam with a Steam workshop for ROM hack and have tweeted support for fan games... SEGA are very supportive of that kind of thing. They're nothing like Nintendo who'll send a C&D letter to a fan for daring to even upload a song to youtube, never mind a fan game.

i would love to see a comparison of the different clone controllers. could the outer shell or buttons from any of them be used to rebuild vintage controllers?
Say, maybe M2 can add that as an alternate menu layout if they have enough time music and all, heck why not go the extra mile and use the SEGA channel intro to open the menu as well (regardless of menu layout), c'mon M2 surely you can add more stuff before release, you always like to go the extra mile but based on MVG's video the Genesis/Mega Drive mini seems lacking quite a bit.
Knowing M2 is behind this already told me this would be worth it. I saw a showcase night video of their Battle Garegga release, and they showed off every single build of the game showing at what fps it was running at. They make sure they do it right or not at all.
IMHO, the top advantages of mini consoles are: 1. Great for affordably playing retro games for a system one may no longer own. Super stoked for the TurboGrafx Mini. I never owned one, and it is a treasure trove of lesser known platformers, shooters, and RPGs. 2. Mini consoles are excellent for gaming while traveling. 3. They are fantastic for playing games which originally had a battery back-up in the cartridge - being that most of those internal batteries have long since died. Sooo great to play retro RPGs such as Link to the Past, Final Fantasy III (aka VI), and Phantasy Star IV with the ability to save at any moment to system memory. BUT, mini consoles NEED to evolve and include features such as a functional cartridge slot (would be a phenomenal capability for those of us with big game collections) and/or the ability to officially download MORE games from an online eshop, Virtual Console-style.
Correction: The Wily Wars was actually released in the U.S. However, it was only released on SEGA Channel, never physically, which is probably why you said that. Otherwise, great video!
I can't say the latest "mini-console bundles" are something I'm keen on (Getting old games running on new & region-free hardware like the Analogue Super Nt & Mega SG are definitely more of my thing), but it's certainly nice to see that unlike the PlayStation Classic, there are no caveats out of the box nor immediate signs of drawbacks as the Nintendo Mini Systems reportedly exhibited. M2 are definitely the right folks for such a job, and I'm glad they were able to do a good one.
I want a Sega Saturn Mini packed with Radiant Silvergun, Saturn Bomberman, The Panzer Dragoon Trilogy, NiGHTS, Deep Fear, Virtua Fighter games, Fighters Megamix, Dead or Alive, Virtua Cop, Dragon Force, Gaurdian Heroes, Shinobi Legion, Sonic Jam, & a lot of other Saturn gems.
Especially from a now cheap ass company like sega. @games, Sega new what they were doing. All those other minis from them were just to build up this official release and make it seem god like. But ill have to buy it as im a collector.
I am from EU and I think the lineup of games is really good. Light Crusader, Megaman WW, Comix Zone,... Some REALLY GREAT and often expensive games when you try to get the originals!
Looks amazing! Finally a megadrive we deserve! However.. one of the things i didn't expect to be disappointing was the CRT filter! They did a good job of it in their sega vintage collection (360/ps3) from what i remember..
_Mega Man: The Wily Wars_ didn't receive a physical release in North America, but it was available via the Sega Channel about three months before its release in PAL territories. Also, a physical NTSC version exists under the title _Rockman Mega World_ (the Japanese release, which preceded the others).
I grew up with SNES and all of my suspicions were confirmed: The Genesis was good but it was noooooo war as good as the SNES and its library. I did find the ACTUALLY good games (Streets Of Rage 2 is ass): The Monster World games, Light Crusader, Land Stalker, and Beyond Oasis were the only games with real meat and staying power; I highly recommend them.
I do like the look of the interface/music and the ability to flip the cart labels around, that's a neat touch. Maybe something to entice somebody who already has a hacked NES/SNES Mini to buy this.
I love good CRT filters, even blurry ones. Because we shouldn't underestimate how pixelart was made during the 80s and 90s, a lot of the time they used stripes or dithering to create more colors and transparency. In shinobi 3 you can't make out the background from the water falls on level two. And in Streets of Rage 2 the lights in the bar just looks messed up. This kind of graphics was created with blurry output in mind, causing pixels to blend. But yeah. CRT filters needs to do pixel blending and it needs brightness/contrast adjust (In order to cope with dark scanlines)
The video of these games look gorgeous in HD! This may be the least screwed up mini system released so far! I always found that Genesis has darker hues and overall pic than Nintendo at the time on original hardware. So the darker screens here is perfect to me! I don’t want an overly brightened contrast spec for Genesis. As well as much more synthesized, ominous music than the happier feel of Nintendo. I loved some of the games on Nintendo. But always considered the Genesis a superior system for hard core gamers!
I'm satisfied with emulation on my preferred handheld. There are some issues, obviously, but they can easily be overlooked due to the fact that I can literally play these games anywhere and I can add more games if I want to. I wouldn't buy the Genesis Mini for myself... But for a friend who isn't that big into emulation like I am? Absolutely! No doubt about it. Great work, Sega.
According to that reasoning even the atgames ones were released on behalf of Sega. Still, it is the last console that deserves any kind of respect since the Dreamcast.
@@Hmbs271 The AtGames, TecToy and other clone consoles are officially licensed, but not released by Sega. The Mega Drive Mini was a main project from Sega, and they contracted M2 to develop the emulation software. Its not uncommon for companies to get hardware and software from other companies. Sega itselft puslished the MD Mini.
Zuiki Allwinner, Nintendo used the R16 for their Classic systems and now SEGA is using Zuiki stuff nice!!! Tip: If you change the language say to Japanese the layout covers will change to Japanese style. :)
I had a megadrive way back and in the uk at the time Japanese games were easily bought. I loved shooters like Hellfire, Gairies, Musha, Tatsujin, insector x, Eliminate Down and countless others. This mini console looks brilliant and is a must buy for me especially as it has Darius which is a game i would have loved on the megadrive all those years ago.
Definitely considering on picking one up now. I'm not to keen on keeping the Model 2 Genesis that I found a while back since I'm limited to composite video cables. This is the one console that I'm stumped on getting a better picture quality out of real hardware, so I may as well just get the mini. Plus, I'm positive we'll have the option to mod games on it
So sad that Sega had to die. Not because of incompetence or by making bad games. But because of the miscommunication between two branches of the company. They could've been the 4th player in the great console war
I think Sega's tenure in the Home Console market ending with the Dreamcast is fitting. Going all the way back to the Sega SG-1000, Sega consoles were primarily designed for porting Sega's own Arcade Games, and with every generation (Master System, MD/Genesis, 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast) Sega's consoles had the best ports of their Arcade games. After the Dreamcast Era, Arcade games were declining in popularity and consoles like the Xbox and GC were perfectly capable of running Sega's Arcade ports.

Mr Babangoh's Service, Kalinski's main highlight was coupling the Model 1 Genesis with Sonic 1 as the pack-in replacing Altered Beast. But other than that, he is just as guilty, creating and publishing horrible sega cd fmv games and he played a key role in creating the disaster that was the 32X, overall he wasn't that great either.
The CRT filter looks just like how I remember the genesis on my old CRT television. The genesis always looked extra dim and muddy to me, but maybe that's just because I had a bad TV growing up.
These press embargo are silly. What ends up happening is all the TH-camrs flood my feed with the same thing at literally the same minute, whereas if they did it without an embargo it could trickle in and they would actually get more exposure. I know this isn't your fault MVG but I also know Sega is reading this.
I hope it happens, though the lack of information on the Zuiki chip is worrying. If that chip doesn't have documentation available, it will be much harder for the scene to crack.
@Jimmy S so this device has SD card support? If so, then that's a feature I'm just now hearing a/b. I have a modded PlayStation Classic so if mod support on a Genesis Mini is limited from that front then it's not the end of the world since my PSC plays all of my desired roms just fine.
Cool. I'll probably get this as a collectible (already got the SNES, NES, and PS Mini's). If I actually want to play the games it's easier to just emulate on a Pi or a PC but I still like having the nice packaged product too.
To be honest... If I wouldn't still have my original sega genesis of my childhood with a good collection of games and my framemeister for hooking it up on my modern 4K gaming TV... yeah, I would definitely buy one of these... and the CRT mode is not that bad, in my opinion
It's good to see the product is well made. It's not something for me, though. I made my own "mini multi retro console" that does all the current (and yet to be released) systems VERY well out of a 4 year old s905 chip media box flashed with LAKKA and reviewed it. I can see the appeal for others such as the casual market. Looking forward to the full review 👍

Not bad, waiting for the full review about the hardware and emulation. It seems to fare better than the new console Tectoy launched some time ago in Brazil with recreated hardware. But still, I do believe that FPGA retro consoles are the future.
Thank God the sound is not pure garbage like the ATGames Genesis models. Already much happier with this than any previous attempts, and the box is kinda cool too.

For me the crt filter looks good, at least in the video on my phone, it tries to capture the old image quality.
I already have a great raspberry pi setup, but honestly, I still really want this and want to support Sega.

Curious if these usb controllers would work on pc with Sega emulators?
Pretty much any USB controller could work on PC with third party software. Steam's controller emulation supports quite a few controllers.
Wii U pro controllers do not and they have USB connection.

More than likely will definitely work. That is unless the USB ports are wired differently than usual, which is HIGHLY unlikely

@@Hmbs271 The AtGames, TecToy and other clone consoles are officially licensed, but not released by Sega. The Mega Drive Mini was a main project from Sega, and they contracted M2 to develop the emulation software. Its not uncommon for companies to get hardware and software from other companies. Sega itselft puslished the MD Mini.
Only emulation is made by M2. Hardware is SEGA's responsibility.
It's a crying shame the MK trilogy is not on this.

Zuiki Allwinner, Nintendo used the R16 for their Classic systems and now SEGA is using Zuiki stuff nice!!! Tip: If you change the language say to Japanese the layout covers will change to Japanese style. :)

Never really played any of the Genesis games since myself and all my friends had Nintendo systems. Looks like it may be worth picking one up.
I had a megadrive way back and in the uk at the time Japanese games were easily bought. I loved shooters like Hellfire, Gairies, Musha, Tatsujin, insector x, Eliminate Down and countless others. This mini console looks brilliant and is a must buy for me especially as it has Darius which is a game i would have loved on the megadrive all those years ago.

Definitely considering on picking one up now. I'm not to keen on keeping the Model 2 Genesis that I found a while back since I'm limited to composite video cables. This is the one console that I'm stumped on getting a better picture quality out of real hardware, so I may as well just get the mini. Plus, I'm positive we'll have the option to mod games on it
I love the videos. New project for you. Get the headphone jack working on that Genesis. That would be a very cool video. If its possible.
So sad that Sega had to die. Not because of incompetence or by making bad games. But because of the miscommunication between two branches of the company. They could've been the 4th player in the great console war
Tom Kalinski was a bright spot during the Genesis era but then that idiot Bernie Stolar came in and from then on, the company was history.
I think Sega's tenure in the Home Console market ending with the Dreamcast is fitting. Going all the way back to the Sega SG-1000, Sega consoles were primarily designed for porting Sega's own Arcade Games, and with every generation (Master System, MD/Genesis, 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast) Sega's consoles had the best ports of their Arcade games. After the Dreamcast Era, Arcade games were declining in popularity and consoles like the Xbox and GC were perfectly capable of running Sega's Arcade ports.

Mr Babangoh's Service, Kalinski's main highlight was coupling the Model 1 Genesis with Sonic 1 as the pack-in replacing Altered Beast. But other than that, he is just as guilty, creating and publishing horrible sega cd fmv games and he played a key role in creating the disaster that was the 32X, overall he wasn't that great either.

The CRT filter looks just like how I remember the genesis on my old CRT television. The genesis always looked extra dim and muddy to me, but maybe that's just because I had a bad TV growing up.

These press embargo are silly. What ends up happening is all the TH-camrs flood my feed with the same thing at literally the same minute, whereas if they did it without an embargo it could trickle in and they would actually get more exposure. I know this isn't your fault MVG but I also know Sega is reading this.
Content makers each receive their review units at different times and some take longer to make their videos.
How else would you make things fair?

I hope it happens, though the lack of information on the Zuiki chip is worrying. If that chip doesn't have documentation available, it will be much harder for the scene to crack.

@Jimmy S so this device has SD card support? If so, then that's a feature I'm just now hearing a/b. I have a modded PlayStation Classic so if mod support on a Genesis Mini is limited from that front then it's not the end of the world since my PSC plays all of my desired roms just fine.
Cool. I'll probably get this as a collectible (already got the SNES, NES, and PS Mini's). If I actually want to play the games it's easier to just emulate on a Pi or a PC but I still like having the nice packaged product too.
The echo chamber on M.2 is in full effect, even ign mentioned them. I wonder if anyone would even know who they were if mylifeingaming didn't exist..

To be honest... If I wouldn't still have my original sega genesis of my childhood with a good collection of games and my framemeister for hooking it up on my modern 4K gaming TV... yeah, I would definitely buy one of these... and the CRT mode is not that bad, in my opinion

It's good to see the product is well made. It's not something for me, though. I made my own "mini multi retro console" that does all the current (and yet to be released) systems VERY well out of a 4 year old s905 chip media box flashed with LAKKA and reviewed it. I can see the appeal for others such as the casual market. Looking forward to the full review 👍

What's the name of the game you were playing towards the end with the green ball guy? I used to play that as a child and couldn't remember what game it is.
Not bad, waiting for the full review about the hardware and emulation. It seems to fare better than the new console Tectoy launched some time ago in Brazil with recreated hardware. But still, I do believe that FPGA retro consoles are the future.

Thank God the sound is not pure garbage like the ATGames Genesis models. Already much happier with this than any previous attempts, and the box is kinda cool too.
