The story - as given by his family in the documentary Our Survey Said - goes that he overheard 'chicken' as the answer to the third question, and he got it into his head that if 'chicken' had worked, then surely 'turkey' must be one of the answers as well! Give him his due, though: "turkey" and "chicken" actually were two good answers to the same question - the only problem was that he failed to spot which question it was, or more to the point, wasn't. There may be a slight explanation for this: at 0:46 the studio sound-proofing was cut off for some reason, and Bob later said that he heard his brother say “chicken”, so “turkey” was in his head as a potential answer. How he thought it would be the answer to all three questions remains a mystery 😂
He obviously couldn't filter it out under the pressure. He'd already shown his ability at family fortunes in the 'Famous Irishman' debacle in the first round.

I had a theory that he was somehow trying to cheat (maybe saw or heard a question or answer ). I think I've been validated!
Here's what I think happened: He had turkey on his mind because he heard chicken and also heard that his brother did well. So in his mind he's thinking "Ok, when the right question comes, say 'turkey'". With the beach question, he just blurts out 'turkey' which is the first thing on his mind. When the 2nd question arrives, he thinks 'ahh, here's the chicken question.', so he says 'turkey'. When the 3rd question hits, he realizes that he failed miserably and THIS is the chicken question, so he just laughs at his own failed attempt to cheat while saying 'turkey'.
At this point he can't really concentrate and pretty much knows all is lost.
What actually happened is that he saw Turkey was one of the answers on the host's card and it got in his head too much. He said it himself in an interview.
We have taken turkey sandwiches to the beach in this man's honor!!

That is just one of the many, many slip-ups that Max Bygraves (host) did during his two series of Family Fortunes. He was hired by the makers, Central TV, as a replacement for the original host, Bob Monkhouse, simply because Max was a famous celebrity (though a singer, not a presenter).

40 years to the day (28th October, 1983) TODAY, since this CLASSIC moment of TV Gold played out! Skip to 2:06 if only interested in seeing Bob’s part of the round where Turkey chaos ensues! To provide context - somehow backstage, he had heard “chicken” being answered, but he didn’t know to which question it related to. I gather he then panicked, thereby giving the answer “Turkey” to EVERY question which led to this moment of absolute TV Gold! Happy 40th birthday to this iconic moment 😆

I can't watch this without degenerating into a dribbling mess through uncontrollable laughter. In my opinion it's the funniest thing to have ever been shown on television. The point that the camera pans around to the guy's disgruntled family knocked me off my sofa the first time I saw it.

Nice false authority there. The family have given two slightly different accounts of the incident. He heard chicken as an answer, or someone told him turkey as he was walking to the stage. I think the second is more likely.
I always thought he just saw the food often stuffed question on the card that Max Bygraves is holding. You can see him having a good look at it before he starts.

The inside word was as he went to the booth he heard the food often stuffed question and his brain said turkey. Problem was he got mixed up then said turkey to every answer. Bob is a legend. The best family fortune star by a mile.
