  • "a bug's land" at the Disney California Adventure was the parks first expansion. After opening in 2002 and operating for 16 years, the land has been permanently closed for an upcoming "Marvel Land". This video chronicles it's brief history and how it effected it's home park, the California Adventure.

    Apologies for the typo in the first slide (saying "2001-2018" when the land wasn't opened until 2002). The fact that it's story started in 2001 with the opening of the park threw me off.

    This place was the most chill out of all the park areas, especially at night with a bunch of tired teens. I liked the leaky faucet the most, and the lighting.

      Lol you hit the nail on the head. Bugs Land was the happening place for teens when the sun was going down! All the rides were basically walk-ons at that time of day, and the rides were just fun enough to interest the tired teen crowd.

    im really going to miss it but i do agree that something new and better needs to replace it, a bugs land really had a great run

    I will always think kindly on this simple land because my kids were 3 and 7 when it opened and they loved that there was a place that was their size for a least a little while...Sure, they quickly grew out of it, but, even as adults, we always at least walked through each time we visited DCA and were able to smile and reminisce

    • @whossoul
      @whossoul 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. Whenever the rest of the group would go on one of the rides with a height restriction (which in DCA is almost all of them!) I would take my daughter to Bugs Land and we would ride Francis's Lady Bug Boogie over and over again while we waited. I love DCA, but worry that this is going to make it even harder to keep young children happy at a park that they are so excluded from.

      Bridget Mistry YEAH! I agree! It’s Tough to be a Bug would move out of the Tree of Life theater and into a much newer theater adjacent to the Tree of Life and there should be a lot with different bug themed rides like a bug carousel with ants, grasshoppers, ladybugs, caterpillars, bees, praying mantises, rhinoceros beetles, Hercules beetles, fireflies, cicadas and other bugs! 🐜 🦗🐝🐞🐛🦋

    My first trip to DCA in 2006 was AWFUL except for Tower of Terror and Bug's Land. They seemed to be the only thing really themed like a Disney attraction/land should be. The rest was like a Six Flags. For that, Bug's Land always had a place in my heart. Especially when my kids all fell in love with it over the last 13 years. "Goodbye my friends. I miss you already."

    Thank you for this well done video! I am one of the ones who's sad about the closing of Bug's Land..I loved the show there and always looked forward to going to it. I loved the water area that was unique to find between both parks where you could cool off from the heat and let the kids get wet. I loved Heimlich's chew chew train and it always made me smile smelling the scent of watermelon and animal crackers as we went through. The theme was done so well with so much detail..just like Cars Land. You could go to the restrooms in a giant tissue box, sit on popsicle stick benches, walk through a huge toy story cereal box, etc. It was always such a nice shaded, quiet, and whimsical part of DCA..I got to visit one last time this past July with my 6 year old and one year old boys, so I am extremely happy to have been able to take both of my children there. I am not a huge Marvel fan and I am nervous to see what plans they have for this part of the park..what they did with Tower of Terror (imo) is absolutely hideous. I just don't want them changing too much where everything is now new and flashy and loud, appealing to their newer acquired franchises, and losing out on the magical and whimsical touches you love to experience at Disney.

    Bugs Life and the farm were the best part of DCA for a little while. My daughter was born in 1990 so this was "her land". My sister loved Heimlich and I loved the Bug Boogie. High walls made my daughter love it too. Funniest thing to ever happen was on the Bug Cars. They moved so slow that when a little boy got stuck the CM just walked out amongst the cars and turned his car around. 😁

    I never understood A Bug's Land, since A Bug's Life isn't really one of the more memorable PIXAR films imo, but I really admired the theming! It was probably one of the more immersive areas in Disney, and I was kinda bummed to hear it was going away for the theming alone. But I'm sure Marvel will be a lot more of a draw to DCA compared to A Bug's Land, so it's a smart choice by the company to replace it.

    • @whossoul
      @whossoul 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I get why bringing in Marvel is a smart move, but I worry that long run they might be hurting themselves. One of the big reasons DCA struggled when it first opened is the lack of family rides. Closing Bugs Land will remove 1/3rd of all the rides with no height restriction in DCA. When that leaved like 6 rides, one of which is frequently closed (Golden Zephyr), then it makes me worry they are on the verge of again not having enough rides for the whole family.

    As a 2002 baby this was practically my favorite area of the park as a little kid. Even when I began to enjoy other rides like Tower of Terror and Screaming after I turned about 7 it was always so cool to just go on some relaxing rides for an hour or so during a DCA day. I haven’t been to DCA since 2012 and if one things for sure I will completely miss that old nostalgic feeling of the park from my childhood next time I visit 🥺🥺 I know they were hit and miss with some people but Paradise Pier, the Orange ride, Bug’s Land, Muppet Vision, The Aladdin musical, (when I was reallllyyyy little the playhouse Disney show), Soarin’ over California, and California Screaming were the greatest and make me so nostalgic to this today.

      @whossoul 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marvel is undoubtedly more popular than Bugs Land. However, removing 1/3 of the few rides the whole family can go on at DCA isn't a wise move. Attendance suffered so much at its opening partially because there weren't enough rides that kids can go on. This is a step forward theming wise, but a step backwards appealing to families.

      As a parent with a small child that is bellow the height requirements for most of the rides at DCA I care. If it was being replaced with more family friendly attractions and thrill rides that would be great. But for a park that is supposed to be for families, removing all the family rides seems backwards.

    Interesting note about A Bug's Land that I was told about during training back in 2012. The land is apparently supposed to take place in the overgrown gardens of The Hollywood Tower Hotel. I was never told whether it was originally planned that way with the impending opening of Tower and both projects being somewhat planned together, or if the story was changed when Tower opened. Either way it gave it a little extra personality. It also made sense given that the tallest point of DCA's Tower faced into Bug's Land, giving the small amount of forced perspective on the building an extra boost by looking so much smaller among the clovers and grass of the land. After Tower closed, the "gardens" storyline kinda faded out and it was only a matter of time till the land closed and was replaced as well.

    2002-2018 is not bad at all for a Bug's Life themed land, considering that it was a one shot film without any sequels, spinoffs, or any huge franchise value like (cough) Marvel. It will always have a special place in my heart for sure, but sadly other people will always compare it to.other Pixar greats and say it was just an ok or average Pixar tale

    Im so glad they finally closed that land. DCA was originally planned to be an adult/thrill park similar to Epcot, and having Disneyland be the childrens park. I had a pass the first few years that the park was open. Granted it was a nightmare, but instead of building a kids land they should have built Tower of terror sooner. Also when It's tough to be a bug opened many guest complained about how the bee stings were too rough causing back problems for guest the following days. Even as a 10yr I was like what the h*** is this when bugs land opened (but it was better than the john deer tractors and garden show). Also the park was despair due to most rides not functioning properly like hollywood limousine ride and even soaring over California some days. Also for the rides they did have lines would be hours long because such few rides were open.

    I never knew this until now, in 2017 I visited the place and Met Flik and Princess Atta, I will miss it because I really liked a Bugs life at the time and still do, Maybe someday it could come back to another Disneyland/Disney world.
    I also enjoyed Cars land and met Red, hopefully that Doesn't Close anytime soon 😔

    Okay so what’s weird is that I was having a dream about this one old Disney attraction/ride(?) [The large orange/peach thing] and now I watched this video and I saw it in this video! And I thought to myself “d-deji vu?”

    Although i do really like Marvel and i am happy to see the new Marvel land thing, a bugs land was really one of the only attractions that kids could actually go to. I am so sad to see it go because that was my childhood 😭

    Honestly the it’s tough to be a bug show horrified me as a kid... my first memory of DCA was back in 2005 before the major overhaul and honestly the only thing I remember loving was the ladybug ride! I’m excited to see what this new Marvel land is going to be but am hoping it isn’t just a cheap reskin of the place.

    I miss A Bugs Land.....(Although, truth be told, I've been missing the entire Resort since Aug. 2014)
    I thought the specifically-themed "standard" rides were just fine...and great for kids!

    When I saw it closed, I prayed the new one would be Wall-E themed, because having all robotic and futuristic would be so cool! But nope, it was Marvel.

    I went there on its very last day of operation, which I believe may have been September 3rd. we took a picture with the chew chew train for memories sake. I agree it wasn't one of the most impressive expansions, but it served us well. it sure was however, god compared to superstar limo *cringes*
